Check your local sears, I bought 8 pc stubby Gearwrench sets, one in standard, the other in metric for $29.00 each today! I got the last standard, and the next to last metric. The sets are discounted 50%, but they are not discontinued. If they are out, ask for a raincheck for the $29.00 price, they will do it.

I'd generally rather have the reversible stubby wrenches, because if I'm that tight for working space, the offset head will come in handy. But there's no chance to buy a Blackhawk or Duralast set at anywhere near that price.

I am assuming that you are speaking of the gearwrenches with the reversing pawl lever? I see how the reverse lever could be a big plus in a tight spot. I only have bought gearwrenches when I have found them at this kind of price, so I have not found any of the reversing ones this cheap. For me, any gearwrenches are a luxury so I only buy when I find a bargain on them, and I will not worry about getting the big sizes as I have good conventional sizes to cover the big stuff. Ironic, the last set I bought was actually the HF Pittsburg brand (i know, but remember LUXURY) I bought their flex head sets in standard and metric for I think $29.00 each When you compare them to the Gearwrench brand you cannot tell the difference. Both are lifetime backed, and quality, fit, and finish seems the same to me! I will see how well the HF set does.

Yes. Husky Pro at Home Depot also has a seven piece set. I don't know how much they run. Another design they have at Sears is the stubby ratcheting with the flex head.

Pittsburgh is the house brand for Harbor Freight Tools.

If you are interested in these you might call sears. I want back and looked at the flier after I posted earlier, it is rather confusing; the sale was either for Sun & Mon only, or they may honor the sale price for a week! Since I do not know, just call sears and check it out if you are interested.

They had the same sale about 2 months ago. I grabbed a set, and I dont know how I worked without a set of stubby wrenches before. I now use them quite a bit, and they have saved me a few times. Definately a good deal at $30

I have the GearWrench (SAE & Metric box/open end) and the Pittsburgh (SAE & Metric - double box end) ... and damn if I can tell a difference in them when it comes to "feel" of the ratcheting mechanism.

And to be quite honest, the Pittsburgh wrench's chrome finish is quite a bit better.

It was in the Sunday insert ads with our local paper. I picked mine up on Monday, and they were virtually cleaned out, however they would give rainchecks.

Please elaborate, If I removed the markings from both brands I would bet you could not tell the difference. The mechanism is as smooth, the wrench is not clunky, and the finish is every bit as good as the Gearwerench. In this very rare indeed instance I think both brands were assembled in the same plant, just stamped differently! My experience has shown one to operate just as smoothly as the other, and I have both brands!

The ratcheting ends are not near as smooth as any of the other grearwrenches I have used (they actually like there is sand in the mechanism), also the open end is somewhat more prone to flex (not a big concern but annoying none the less) The chrome finish looks as good as any other wrench.

Perhaps the design has been improved, or you got a bad set or something cause I swear to you, what I bought are truely identical in every respect!

same here ... no discernible difference whatsoever ... other than the Harbor Freight models having a better chrome finish ... for what it's worth, I LOVE my GearWrench brand wrenches. One of the best investments I have made and this post is in no way a negative towards them.
