8pt sockets are nice to have, and I'm sure the Armstrong set you linked are great. However, when I was in my 8pt search, Ebay seemed to have a great selection at a much lower cost.

Sears sells Craftsman branded 8 point in 3/8" and 1/2" drive.

That's what I have. The price was right and they've worked perfectly every time. Just make sure they're made in the USA.

I added a set of 8 point impact sockets to my tools. We have been dismantling power poles and rebuilding horse drawn implements lately.

No it won't. 12 point sockets are usually double-hex. The corners have different angles than triple-square. Now if you can get a 12 point triple-square socket, then I stand corrected, but those won't properly fit a hex bolt.

Modern design 12 point won't work.

Old ones do. I have some Snap-On 12 point sockets from 1943-44 or so (old WWII "G" stamped sockets, no warranty), and they fit square fasteners just fine. The issue is that they don't utilize much surface area, so it is easy to round off the edges of the square drive component you are turning if it is very tight.

I would check around Ebay first. Many people sell them there for next to nothing with quite a few people have not ause for them or do not even know what they are for.

If you are set on 8 point sockets, go ahead. There is nothing wrong with them. Another thing to look at is universal/spline sockets and wrenches. I believe in addition to covering a variety of other fasteners they can also grab 4-point.

Craftsman branded ones are "Max Axess".
Something like this.

In addition to the sockets, you could get a pass-thru ratchet. Or just sockets.

At first I was taken back by the high price of $92.00 dollars for that 8-point set, but I guess they are 1/2 drive but that still seems high in my book.

I buy sockets on the cheap from Cl or garage sales, etc and then I find a few 8-point from time to time. My guess is that the op needs them in 1/2 drive as a set asap, so maybe that set is still a good bargain as compared to the truck brands.

Take a look at ebay... I ended up snagging a set of Cornwell 1/2" impacts for less than the Armstrong set in the OP. IIRC, the set runs 3/8" to 1".

Craftsman 19pc Universal set.

A combination of strength, adaptation and fast moving design, the Craftsman 19-piece socket wrench set delivers torque when and where you need it. Developed to grab countless fasteners, the specialized interior ridging takes hold of quad, hex and 12 point nuts and bolts, while turning both spline and external Torx fasteners with ease. And when you’re dealing with a chewed-up partially rounded bolt, no worries, this set is built to take hold where others do nothing but slip.
