8 pt sockets

I've picked up a couple older lathes, with square head bolts everywhere. Any suggestions on a decent set of 8-pt sockets?

Most of those lathes used wrenches for those bolts. I see quite a few 8 point sockets on Ebay. Some are Craftsman new old stock. Most of the sets a 5 pieces. I think the most common are 3/8" - 5/8".

I have a 3/8 drive Proto set that was pretty cheap from Zoro. It only goes to 1/2" though.

You should get a set of female pipe plug sockets as they are made for square fasteners.

3/8 drive Wright 8 points, use them more than I thought.

Wright, Williams, SK or any of the industrial brands will have you covered for 8pt or 4pt square sockets.

I picked up a specific 8pt in 3/8 drive from Snap-on for the oil drain plugs in some Generac generators, and the off corner engagement is awesome for hammering it on to plugs that are rounded off from years of sloppy adjustable wrenches. Way fancier than my ancient Craftsman set.

That's the way to go, right there! You can waste a lot of money buying ones and twos off of eBay with shipping.

Second, they're hard to find on eBay because it's hard to do a correct search: 8 pt, 8 point, double square, etc.

Koken makes several metric 8 point sockets from 14mm to 23mm, in 1/2" drive.
But you just might be looking only for SAE's, yes seems that Williams is the way to go.

Greenlee chassis punches have square drive bolts,if you do electrical work.

I can't tell you where to buy 8 pt. sockets because I never had to. My co-workers would always throw them in the trash if they came in a socket set. I picked them out of the trash and have found them handy to have around. I use them on my 1950's bulldozers and tractors and for driving taps.

8 Point sockets are also designed for square fasteners, the pipe plug sockets designed for female plugs are pretty handy as well. I have 8 point sockets through 1 7/16".
