whatever tape you find to play in it, the best song will almost always be the one that is split between two tracks...

Cool stuff man. I got a player from a 70s caddy and a bunch of 8 tracks from a buddy. Was hoping to use it in a chev but never got around to it.

At least get the name right:
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

I actually had a 4-track deck (Muntz) in an old Pontiac.
I also remember tossing more than one 8-track cartridge out the window of my van, with loose tape streaming out of it as it bounced down the road.

I have one in my 76 Eldorado but it plays fast, everything sounds like alvin and the chipmunks :(

Bummer because I have a mess of tapes I got at a swap meet, American Graffiti, Johnny Cash, all the good stuff :D

A guy I know gave me a console tape holder, and about 15 eight tracks.
Now all I need is a late production run 67 up thru 75 Imperial to play them in:)

Sold a fellow a 1978 Thunderbird and we were waffling on the price until my brother popped a pink tape of Tom Jones in the 8 track. At the conclusion of "What's New Pussycat" he agreed to full price if I threw in the tape!
He got a Humperdink, Bread and Alice Cooper tape...The grin he had driving off to "No more Mister Nice Guy" still tickles the pooh outta me!!

Any pics of the van? Lol. I've always liked some of those vans that were fixed up.

LULZ!!!! I remember that! You would be listening and it would go quiet then "Click,Clack" and the music would start up again.

That splice was where mine usually broke, unless they got tangled in the rollers first.

Are you sure it just isn't Johnny Cash during his speed days...?

American Graffiti!!! That brings back memories. I drove my older brother and sister crazy on the Friday night drives to the cottage in the Country Squire. I made my Dad play "Runaway" at least 15 times an hour!! That and "Love Potion number 9".

Thanks for the memories:)

I love nostalgia, but 4-track and 8-track tape players should all be melted down for whatever can be salvaged. One or 2 for the Smithsonian is enough.

But, they do hold the distinction of being one of the first ways to take personal music with you. That is unless you had an ARC inverted 45RPM record player. Combine that with a Vibrasonic and you owned the cruise boulevard.

I learned to drive in a '79. I can parallel park anything now. I remember that car had a 400 in^2 engine with a Carter ThermoQuad carburetor. What a beast! Not to mention the huge back seat!

I had a Van Halen 8-track that switched tracks during "Little Dreamers."

Hay, I had those. Going over a bump would bounce the reverb and the needle would reset somewhere else. Back in my old 57 Chevy. In Long Beach also.

HAHA, was just gonna say that. I have an old 8 track player/tuner in the garage, I pop a tape in once in a while. Most of them drag a little, just wedge a matchbook in......

I love rocking the Boston, ELO, Loverboy, etc....brings me back to the old days....:)

Remember, if the sound is more muddled than usual (note, I didn't say "clear") the old trick of shimming the cartridge with a booka matches in various positions to fix the tracking works as well now as it did 40 years ago.

Edit: I'm slow tonight. :(

A while back in the attic I found my old 8 track player and the Spark-O-Matic speakers. I was going to hook it up and play it in the garage. I probably have 100 8 track tapes but most of them the rollers turned to mushy stuff kinda like what gummy bears are made of..

In High School, all my Buddies had 8-Tracks in their Cars, Vans, Trucks...And I went the other Way...I Bought a Sanyo Auto Reverse AM/FM Cassette Deck.
I was really Glad That I did.
But, I did miss those really Uncomfortable times when you would be Driving along, singing as loud as you could with the music and the song would just stop....and change Tracks!
Sometimes, it was just plain Funny as Hell if someone was really Into it!
But, for Nostalgia reasons, they are Cool...For actual use...They Sucked.
