hi kids,

i have been wanting to do this ever since i met this place eight years ago. this means doubling my garage size to 19' x 48' interior.

when we bought this house it was a dream come true for the wife and i. she is very proud of it but it had a kind of small two car garage. with the amount of tools i have and the work i do with jeeps, it was pretty cramped. the old place had a better garage...

anyways, i figured this is the perfect place for my garage project and rampant picture whoredom. also, i am enjoying everyone elses projects! very nicely done!!

i have no intention of turning this space into one of the showrooms (some of which i have been salivating over) but more of a working garage for my two on going jeep projects plus maintenance for the TDi and CTD.

anyways, here's some photos of the project... i'll add more as they come, keeping a record of what i do along the way.

3f1fdad2.jpg

it all started with this rig i was selling on craigslist. a very clean 89 beastie...
got a new pal and a head start on the new garage out of the deal when a construction truck pulled infront of my house to look at the burb.

73c50524.jpg

here's one project with no suspension, engine, drivetrain, interior etc... usually in the rain. bummer, huh?

the old section is flat torch down. hoping to someday put some angle on that part.

the bottom of the 6' x 3' window is 6'. i had my doubts of a high window but i am glad we did it that way.

a larger man door too!

more to come

I pulled the wires and most of the insulation before letting the kids knock the wall down. Great fun at 12 & 8!!

Of course I helped a little

Wall is down and my man space has doubled.

Some of the other stuff I have gathered. The cabinets are steel framed / particle military. I am hoping to find something more secure in the future.

Hoping to start wiring this weekend.
Behind the tool box (black wall) I have:
1) 220 50 amp - mig
1) 220 15 amp - compressor
2) 110 20 amp - lights/outlet, outlets

In addition there are two 100 15 amp circuits in the old half

More laters.

Nice addition.

Why didn't you make the stem wall higher though? To match the bottom of the siding with the existing part.

Do you have a build thread somewhere on your TJ?

That would have been better it seems but there is no stem wall on the old part at all it is just sitting on a higher floor an inch over the outside concrete. So we split the difference and saved some coin. I'll see if I can find a link on the TJ

Nice addition! I like what I see of the house, I like the design, it looks like a 50's-60's contemporary ranch. Do you have any pics of the whole house exterior? I would be interested in seeing it. It looks like you did a good job of integrating the addition to the architectural style of the house.

Nice addition!! Way better than that "tent" thing:D.

Awesome Jeeps too. I drove to Longview a couple weeks ago to pick up some hard to find car parts and boy it's a looong ways from Arlington! Was worth it though.

finally got the exterior painted and the outdoor lighting done.
the CTD is back in action so i can get my sheetrock and insulation. i was considering osb but i think drywall is for me this time.

there will be another first for me, i need to do some concrete - 25' x 4' walk way. never worked that stuff by myself before so i guess i will be reading up a bit.

guessing its going to take about $225.00 for materials and mixer rental. hoping to tackle this adventure soon.

one other thing i was considering as a near distant project is to build an outdoor cabinet to hold the car washing supplies. i want it to be shallow in depth from the wall, but big enough to hold buckets, step ladder and long brush for the big truck.
yet another thing to do some research on. i do have left over paint and siding to blend it into the side of the garage...

got the sheetrock and insulation up finally. still feathering out the mud a bit in the new part and hopefully will get to paint on some primer soon.

i want to re-do the seams on the old half of the garage too...
looking forward to getting back into the garage.....

also i picked up a kennedy rolling box with two machinist boxes on it plus another stackon top box.

guess i sould post some pix, huh? i'll do that as soon as i pirime the walls.

EDIT: i still have to 5/8" + greenglue + 5/8" sheet a wall for some noise reduction for the master bedroom. dont want to disturb my wife's sleep when she works all night...

well, here it is... green glue!
08034065-7101-4A70-AD23-0F930B453AE1-4270-000002337E74CFD7.jpg

six sheets of 5/8" + 12 tubes o green glue = hopefully a quieter room next to the garage

35582775-79BE-4EC2-BC93-023A38002580-4270-0000023376B515AF.jpg

yup, you squirt two to three tubes of this vulcan spoo on the back of your 4x8' sheet of drywall...
watch out, it's really sticky and it's runny too.

9EED3540-4D22-4F32-BD95-8281F5CBBA0C-4270-000002336FCFCB8A.jpg

there's the second layer going up. there was no need to tape the joints of the first layer, they are only mudded. second layer will get the full finish.

525283B8-AA39-4F6B-89B4-CB7EB2C09389-4270-000002338668E423.jpg

first layer of mud...

once this half of the garage is done i will move into the old half and retape and repair the walls and ceiling there. apparently the previous owners had a roof leak in the garage and the tape looks like it is falling off.

i still need some wood for the window enclosure and need to figure out what to do with the wires for the lights.... i don't like them like that...

Well, apparently I cannot put a outlet box on a stud the right depth for what Sheetrock I decided to use.
I did a little search on how to bring the outlet to the correct depth for those like me or others who might be adding a layer to their existing walls:

C07CFDE2-E6B0-4787-A58D-E5F8E61FBFCF-1053-0000007097D2BCF5.jpg

These little babies are stackable and snap right onto the screw eliminating the need for an eleventh finger.

E7E9DCAE-E657-4F5C-AB75-D17BC15FA3C6-1053-000000708EDA1250.jpg

Just leave however many you need and click them together.

A0CA13F7-038D-4E53-92AA-7BCD14AB7500-1053-000000706601A883.jpg

They have just enough "squish" built in to make small adjustments.

B5D7F585-47D4-49CD-8A0F-482BB087A958-1053-000000708466D028.jpg

Looks good enough for me. The outlet is now mounted firmly and the cover isn't tweaked out.

C5DC3C4E-D12E-4F41-9EB5-333C6CCE856E-1053-000000705BDA030C.jpg

I still don't know what to do with this one. If anyone has some ideas that will make this better I'm all eyeballs.

Just playing with panaramic photo on my phone. Don't think it is meant for indoors!

Got things sorta where I can use them again. Still a lot of work to go.

Need to figure out a better way to store stuff better. I like the whole cabinet with doors for a more organized feel.

This weekend I rerouted the dryer vent line from its original location. Since we added onto the garage, it has been venting in there. I was worried about mold, mildew etc...

The dryer is in the basement and not convieniently located for a short duct run anymore. The old run was approximately 12' and now it is more like 20'.

This doesn't really make for an ideal situation but I used the best materials possible and tried to avoid any 90 degree elbows. No flex, all steel duct and elbows. I even used metallic tape and no screw

There seems to be plenty of air movement at the wall vent too.

Now I can close off the old vent and green glue the last panel into place.

not too much going on here except moving stuff around.. found a lows gift card on my counter from who knows when? decided to build a bench with it...

i still have to add a few more pieces to the legs, also add doors and sides.

two lower shelves are 24" deep. bench top is 30" deep and 8' long.

Great space dude! Deceptively large given the view from the driveway.

yeah, it is big enough for me now. i haven't been able to use it till recently because i was dumb and hurt both my arms....

all i could do for several months was sit and play guitar till my elbows started throbbing with pain. picking up the wrench was out of the question. :wtf:
