80 Gal Kobolt Air Compressor Clearance, Help

Just reorganized my shop and tucked a new air compressor (60 gallon Kobalt) back in the corner. I have about 6 inches clearance on three sides, fits great.

I just read through the owners manual and see where it calls for 18 inches of clearance on all sides; is this actually necessary? If it truly needs this type of clearance I will have to consider selling it and replacing it with a smaller portable one to meet shop layout requirements. I bought the larger unit as overkill, knowing it would do everything and more than I needed. It will be used very infrequently as I am retired and thought it would last me the rest of my days.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Bought my 60gal second hand and never bothered looking up the owners manual. It's been mounted 1"[?] off the wall around all sides and hasn't caused any issues.

most likely it is a cooling issue, I have two Husky 60 gals mounted right next to a wall for the last 4 years with no problems. If you are concerned I would wire a small fan to circulate air when it is running, I would tap 110V off the pressure switch so it only runs when the compressor does, just a thought

I've always stood compressors up against the wall or into a corner, space is at a premium in a small shop. My shop isn't climate controlled, so it's not like it's any hotter or cooler elsewhere...

I suspect the 18" clearance is for maintenance access. The manual doesn't say?

Exactamundo, as long as the flywheel is not directly against the wall dont worry about it.Watch your run time on it though.I damaged the reed valves in mine sandblasting with it.The 100% cycle duty rating is a joke.Mine ran for maybe 30 minutes straight and down she went.I now have a Curtis compressor. As long as you arent doing anything requiring a ton of air though it should be just fine.

Mine is a 60 gallon vert and is within 7" of the walls on 2 sides, no issues for 5 years now. Make sure to follow the break in procedure. It makes a big difference.

My Kobalt is 7-8" away from one wall, no problems after two years.
