Just over 2 years ago I bought a new 80gal 5hp duel stage IR compressor. This one.
http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/ingersoll-randreg;-5hp-air-compressor-80-gal
A couple months ago I noticed rust spots on the outside of the tank. Its in the garage. I had a 60 gal for 25+ years and have NO rust on it.
I called them and they said sorry its out of warranty (2 years).

Now The pressure switch is either hanging on (blowing the safety release) or not closing (no Air). The contacts are shot. I tried filing them but they are just worn out. It is just a pressure switch and contacts no mag starter.

All the pressure switches I see are rated at 16 amps. What can I buy and install so I don't have to replace the switch every 2 years that wont cost a fortune.

There are 3 ports. 1 to the tank, 1 to the air and one for a gauge.

That motor is taking the pressure switch contacts to the limit or beyond. Indeed, you need a magnetic starter, so the pressure switch only operates the coil in the starter (very low draw) and the heavy contacts of the mag starter carry the motor loads.

The pressure switch also probably has a valve on it for releasing the head pressure that remains on the pump at motor shutdown, allowing the pump to start next time with no load on it. My YouTube video gives you an idea of the starter installation and wiring. (amazing but this video is over 3,200 views now and its the newest one I have posted).

Condor males switches with protection. This option won't require a mag starter.

Try this one...I have had good luck with these guys http://www.upe-group.com/H-D-PRESSURE-SWITCHES.html use one of these...you do not need a mag starter for a 5hp motor if you don't want to spend the money!

That one looks pretty good and a decent price. Can I use a one port and forget the pressure gauge, since i have another gauge at the output of the tank?
In other worsds does it have a port for the tank and another for the compressor? I guess that a dumb question it must have 2, one in and one out.

I watched it but where do you get the hardware and how much. It looks the same as they use on an air condition unit compressor.

BTW I think its a pretty cheap way to build a compressor. I would think IR would be a better company than that.

They have 4 port ones also for $24.75.Use one of those and plug what you don't need.

I ordered one Saturday, but did not get a order acknowledge from the company. Only a paypal receipt.
I also see they do not have any phone number listed on their site or even a email address. How do I know they even got the order or when they will ship? What was your experience? I need that switch asap.

I did not know he was on Ebay. I hope I get it soon, looks like he just shipped today. The old one just welded closed and was running with the pop off open.

thanks

Got it today, it is a much better contactor than what was on the compressor. It works great.
thank you for the address.

There's a lot of misunderstanding of magnetic starter use on this board. It appears that majority believes that all 5HP+ required a magnetic starter. Let's clarify it:

Magnetic Starter = Relay Switch (aka contactor) + thermal overload device

If a pressure switch can handle the load and reliable, then we don't need a relay switch. If the motor has a thermal overload protection feature, then we don't need any thermal overload device. The IR in the photo does have proper components. Whether IR is being "cheap" or not, that's subjective but it's PROPER!

From my experience, some of the earlier Condor (a very popular brand) pressure switch are not very reliable, the switch would burn out in short period time for a 1.5HP unit. Now, if that is your concern, then it's fair to say that you need to use a relay switch (or mag starter).
