Years ago I befriended a gentleman down the road that has become like a second father to me. He saw my 8500 lift master openers and wanted them on his doors of his pole building so I helped him put two of them up. He was having problems with it and tried to reprogram it but wasn't successful. Any way I am not sure what has exactly happen but when I push the black button for a few seconds it starts slowly flashing. I push the black button again to set the up position but it only rises 12" and stops. It doesn't flash a code, it just stops and wont go up any further. The yellow button will cause it to go down, and if you push the operate button to "set" the low position it acts like it wants to go down further and flashes the light unit as if it had an obstruction(but doesn't open back up)

I cant set the force, as i cant get the door open.

I did check the tension roller/switch, its good. Good tension on the door and equal to, about three feet up the door will stay put. I also just as a matter of maintenance lubricated with white lithium spray grease all the rollers and hinges which helped slightly but it still is an easy to open door.

He said it was flashing 13 times which according to the manual means it faulted for force more than three times while closing.

8500 really needs a door that wants to close on its own. It cannot push a door down like a normal operator, so it needs gravity to work for it. I would take 1/4-1/2 turn off the springs (I would do 1/2 turn off of 1 spring if it has a pair to start) and try again.
