What size wheel do you need and what kind of offset, Grandson and I pull garden tractors and get parts from a site called "Super Cub"
they have a good variety of 12" wheels, even have them in Aluminum LOL

Most if not all our rims are 12" X 10.5" wide, might be quicker to just chuck them up cut the centers out and reweld, I have split the shells and rolled a band to make then wider, played with different wheel widths to get that extra inch or two at the end of a pull.

Best I can tell, that rim is a unicorn made only for grasshopper.

Just got back from the west side of the state. We took my son's F150 instead of the Santa Cruz. Good thing. It wouldn't have all fit.

It's an Aeroquip FT1330. Fully functional, 5 sets of dies, and came with a metric **** ton of new fittings. There's a deep drawer on that cart that's full of fittings too. And the instruction book.

The new forklift steering cylinders come in tomorrow. I'll spend a little time fabbing some bracketry at work. Then i'll order the right adapters and fittings if i need any. I'll inspect the hose and maybe some is usable. I'm super stoked.

Great find on the hydraulic machine, as you've mentioned they are insanely expensive to buy new. So when will you start taking orders for hydraulic hoses, I could use a few for my tractor. :)

Lol! Not anytime soon. I saw the machine work at the shop i picked up from. Worked great. Put in the truck, drove home 100 miles. Got home, went to show the wife, i guess something had dislodged on the way home, couldn't tell. Cycled the machine, promptly blew the end off the die holder. 6 broken 1/4-20 capscrews. No other damage seen. The cylinder wasn't even breathing hard. So now i have 6 broken off flush 1/4-20 capscrews i need to get out.

Well sheeet. I was also going to put in an order for some hoses.
I'm sure you'll get it figured out but still a kick in the nuts. Things have a way of turning into more projects.

Yep. My machinist buddy at work fiddled the broken screws out. Left hand drill bits. I have to order screws, but we'll be back in business soon. Also, gives me time to clean the filthy thing.

In other news, my steering cylinders showed up. I made mount bolts for one end from a couple bolts welded end to end. I'll upload photos tomorrow with cylinders mounted. The other end, i need to design and cut out mounts that grab the steering tie rods. Then we can get started on hoses.

i don't have the screws to hold the pressure plate on it yet. Probably monday. I *think* the die probably was not sitting in the register properly. There's a bolt that hooks it in there. It was a 100 mile drive, some bumpy roads, we lifted it out of the truck with the loader and set back on the cart. I didn't look at it before i plugged it in. Just assumed. It was filthy and hard to tell from looking. The shop it was in was a dungeon.

So last night, i made these dual-ended bolts.

20230609_092827.jpg

Those are 6" 5/8 diam bolts welded head to head with a 2" 1/2 diam bolt.

20230609_093719.jpg

This is where they go. The stay arm on the forklift is the most usable spot to put those cylinders. I'm HOPING they don't just rip off. If they do, i'll figure something else out. BUT, It's a good spot to mount them.

20230609_093724.jpg

The cylinders are 8" stroke, and i thought it would need to be shortened with a collar, but it turns out, the stroke i need is almost exactly 8".

20230609_093747_HDR.jpg

I now have to cut out brackets for the tie rod end. I'm going to be using big u-bolts to fasten to the rod end, in case i ever have to adjust the tie rods, i can just loosen, and then adjust and retighten.

And i edited the crimper post above to add the last photo of the drawer.

I need to start thinking about how to store these fittings. Any ideas? I think a Vidmar or Lista is out of the question right now.
I will suggest a bolt bin 72 [18, 24, or 36] hidey holes they do take up wall space but not much otherwise usable floor space [right next to the short wall next to the OH Door +/-, ?] and with the addition of some doors will keep it pretty clean inside, Oh and usually available for under $200 CAD [so ~135-150 US$?] Harry

that is one thing i have never seen cheap ever. every bolt bin i've ever seen was smaller than 72 hole and more like 400.

Been cleaning the crimper.

Pulled the cover and hosed it down, its looking much nicer.

20230609_171624.jpg

what's under the cover was covered in about 1/8" of grease literally everywhere. Half a roll of paper towels and half a bottle of grease cleaner later we have this:
20230609_171615.jpg

That unit was literally completely black. No visible details at all.

I wouldn't call Sarnia close, and what is KITTS?

Update on dies: I'm finding a lot of the other crimpers have compatible dies, with slight changes such as mounting. I should be able to piece something together if i shop hard.

How far are you from the Ambassador Bridge? Essex is 20 minutes from the Bridge. I know this isn't perfect, but nearly everything is cheaper on your side of the ditch. I can't believe this one is the exception. We just need to be more thorough and deeper with the hunt. I know you will find it or something you like better! KITTS is a changing inventory so searh around there, from time to time. Harry https://www.google.com/search?q=kit...ABAcgBEdoBBAgBGAg&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp

The ambassador is probably 2 hrs east. I have never tried to go to Canada for shopping. Just business once or twice. One of the guys in my group lives in Windsor. I can't believe that thing would be cheaper than here, but you never know. I never see them cheap here, but then i've never looked that hard either. Usually see one or two at a swap meet for big coin and just keep on walking.

Edit: I see KITTS is in Farmington. I usually avoid metro detroit like the plague. 275 is a mess, so i'm not going there to browse. I had an offsite gathering a couple weeks ago, in Commerce. It was a 2 hr drive each way from my house. I hated that with a passion. And to think i almost took a job last year in Sterling Heights. I can't even fathom how bad the drive would have been to work..

Being in KITTS, reminds me of the online feeling I get of H.J.Epsteins, I haven't made that trip but I would like to for sure! Anyways back on topic you recently purchased a machine tool (?) I can't recall if it was the lathe and you have a mill or if I've totally lost my mind, but if you have one and plan on getting the other you will want to check them out lots of close-outs, close down stock of machine tooling and accessories. That is more like Novi than downtown Detroit, and timing is everything for traffic avoidance. Harry
P.S. Crossing Customs is a **** shoot at best! I've been treated like a terrorist at war time going both ways, but by and large Crossing isn't usually too painful! Tell the truth and keep the easy to get attitude to a minimum and you'll be ok!

It's been a whirlwind weekend, and today has been all rainy, but i did get into the shop to learn Aluminum TIG.
20230611_214950.jpg

My 2nd ever aluminum tig weld and it's leak free.

I needed a new un-bent radiator for the kubota/woods mower, and so not finding anything for sale used, i ordered a performance ebay radiator for a dodge neon, which is the right height, but too long. I cut it down on the bandsaw and have been whacking off mounts that were on it. I've got it down to a core with two bare tanks with open ends, and i need to get caps welded on the ends and inlet/outlet and cap. I'm actually kinda stoked how easy aluminum tig is. Once i got clean figured out anyway.

Once that is done and mounted, the goal is fab a shroud. I am not risking a huge $$$ engine without a cooling fan shroud.

Final note for the night. Caught and disposed of another groundhog under the shop slab. Sorry Strouty...

Man it has been a while since I've heard about Sterling Heights, I lived there for a summer while doing an internship. That was a different form of traffic than what this country boy was used to. I have no reason to go back to Detroit unless I ever attend the Woodward Dream Cruise.

I'm in the same boat. Grew up in the country, lived in the country most of my life. I put up with the drive to the outskirts of the cesspool just to keep my income up. If i ever figure out a plan for work for myself, i'm gone in a new york minute.

yes. Like tonight i picked up a Trinco blast cabinet. Was going to build one but for the price, i can't diddle with it. Needs glass and gloves. Everything else is there, including foot valve. 36" cabinet with light. shoved it into the barn and back on the computer for more day job work.... sigh. gonna be a rough week this week.

do you have a picture of the chassis part on the Woods Mower that is digging into the tire? In looking at a few pics of the mowers online, they seem to have similar tire location.

Was this a bastardized mower? i.e. take the parts from a variety of mowers and build one that sorta works?

Does appear that some of the wider wheels have the "bar" tires and the narrow rims have the turf style tires, that look narrower......

I don't. The bar tire rim has a deep offset. None of the commercially available rims except from grasshopper and woods use the same offset.

I found a couple more guys selling rims but none have really moved much for me

I had to look back on the previous posts about your mower purchase, which was end of May. Since you aren't having much luck with getting these unicorn wheels.... are you ready to just make some spacers and get on with mowing?
I'm confused how you were able to drive it around the yard if it actually hits the chassis that bad?
One thought to make a spacer quickly and easily, design it in CAD, upload to www.sendcutsend.com and they can make that quick and easy by lasering it in 1/2" steel. Make 2 sets of holes. 1 set goes on the existing studs, and then use either really long studs, or countersunk bolts, stack on some washers and then the wheels and then nuts. Then you're off and mowing while you work on getting the correct wheels, or just run it!
Don't let good enough get in the way of perfect when the grass is growing and time is slipping by!

Ok, good points Kent, i have some news and info on this. Here's the issue: The mower is stock, no changes at all from stock. The wheel drive is just short and/or mounted inboard from the factory.

The mower was purchased with the hitting tires known, but i didn't look that close at it. I figured it was wrong wheels, but did not know how hard they were to get.

Grasshopper must have had special wheels made for the bar tires to accomodate this. The wheels on it are the typical 7" wide rim sold for trailer / mower use. The bar tire wheels are 9" wide, and very deep offset.

He sold it to me with a lug nut spacing wheel surface out about 1/2" With the tires on it, which are already too wide for the wheel, the tires bulge more than normal.

Here's a shot of the lug installed before wheel:
2023-06-16-08-28-42-846.jpg

Then you install the wheel, you end up with this:
2023-06-16-08-33-39-808.jpg

The wheel mount surface is right where that weld seam is in the center of the wheel. It's got to be this direction to get at the tire stem, and it would actually be worse flipped. With the tire on the rim, you end up with the tire sidewall hitting that shaft in the lower left of the picture. It actually wore holes in the sidewalls of the tires.
2023-06-16-08-29-38-016.jpg

That's where i cut thru the tires to get them off because it was so thin there. The tires both had tubes in them and he told me they had tubes because the tires were rubbing. I don't think he knew how to fix it really. He was a hack, living on disability and flipping mowers. He actually called me up to come get another one just like this a week later. Thanks but no thanks.

I did get the first guy to finally find 2 good rims and i paid him this morning to ship UPS.

He sent me photos of the new rims:
354728237_599380305626534_4574159290852754048_n.jpg

354496192_989854235518518_1617345227872100652_n.jpg
351512157_304398831914556_735420869379124643_n.jpg

So you can see how wide they are, and how close the mounting surface is to the back of the wheel.
So those are on the way finally.

In other news, i am not having much luck finding a new die for the crimper, so i have resorted to trying to straighten the cage, and am having some success. Here's what i used to straighten the outer plate:

2023-06-16-08-26-47-700.jpg

Seems to be working ok. The spring plate i will have to weld a couple spots, and the backing plate will need to be welded and ground a little. I did find a guy on ebay who has more of the correct dies, and asked me which would be sellers. I named off the 3 i thought would move well and he will post them saturday.

I don't know that i will buy them all, probably just the one i need, but we shall see. If my repairs work, i should be able to at least get my job done, even if i don't get a flat crip but a barrel field crimp. I don't care for those as much, harder to measure the diameter.

That's good progress on the wheels! Hopefully you can wire wheel clean and paint that rusted wheel a bit to mitigate future problems with it.
