So with the warmer weather, i've been able to get more shop time by a bit and have been working on the burner assembly. I started out with design of a burner plate and flange on the cnc plasma. I'm following the basic design of gerry'sdiy on youtube. But refining a bit. The burner tube is 1/2 copper with an elbow brazed with silphos15 and the outer tube is 1.25in black pipe. I had a buddy at work put a hole in the elbow to fit the copper and tig on a fitting for gas. the inner copper pipe delivers the oil in a small stream to the pot and the black pipe delivers combustion air from outside via the blower on the wall. I cut the black pipe to a 45 degree and welded together with 7018.

The gas pilot valve will probably get put on the burner flange in the boiler, and i hope to use it to light a copper line with holes in it that will run down to the bottom of the burner. Still not sure how well that holds up in the inferno i expect.

After the burner was tacked together, i aligned in the firebox to get placement and tacked the burner on a slight decline to promote oil flow into the pot. Then tacked that to the burner plate. Alignment looks good to me. There's about 1 inch to the bottom of the pot. It's likely i have to pull the burner to get the pot out to clean, but i don't think that's a big issue, its being designed to remove easily.

I didn't finish weld the burner to the flange to give me time to think if i missed anything.

the bung on the side of the burner supplies propane from a gas valve which is the lighting mechanism i'm hoping will work. It's purpose is to light the pilot inside the boiler as far out of the flame as i can get it, which blows on a tube with small holes attached to the exterior of the burner tube which is supplied by the gas main line. It should zip flames down to the main tube exit, hopefully providing a blow torch on the oil, and once running, all gas is shut off and blower air continues the burn. That's the hope anyway. The only other thing i could think of would be a blow torch of some sort, but automatically lighting that was something i hadn't figured out yet. You need about 30 seconds of constant flame on the oil to get it preheated enough to burn well before you can remove it. I couldn't think of any other way to automatically light this thing.

Sealed up the blower and burner gas lines and then made a mounting plate for the gas valve. Picked up a propane regulator and line at harbor freight. Still need to make a flare line from gas valve to burner and the flame transport to burner bottom. Long weekend coming up.5e9b17bcab3681f47cdcabe3ffecca20.jpg8fa90c0810854347bcfe93d23884aa5d.jpg4b67c205b075e2a908c4dca3bfddc6eb.jpg

Picked up some hose for the blower to burner and did a test burn. It works better than I had hoped. I had a nice inferno going in there. Very stoked.

Making good progress. Got the oil portion further along, did another test burn, started mounting the propane stuff. The line running along the main burner is a ribbon burner meant to transfer flame to the main burner. 26dd5861fec93ac29b068892b0a04368.jpg88efb4dc943fda77e9058267cd4ecc09.jpg90abb4fff110f1f7fa70b13e7d0f166e.jpgf337e8300ca26f0ad0702e00c5b4ddec.jpg3e43386be554fbb498dfa1a9484327f3.jpged525336f0d975ca0b4010dc35a6e44d.jpg6cbc88e64810fa84b4186c5632b9566b.jpg

Mounted the gas valve and working to get the pilot burner installed. Pulled this out of my junk box, it's a setup from a gas water heater. The spark control lights the pilot burner and once confirmed, turns on the main gas line. Once that's on the ribbon transfers to the main burner which then heats the pot and gets the oil going. In theory anyway.557353490f147843f648828f5415cc2d.jpg3f04fa743f06515b199b6876e1f2c34b.jpg081e9c7674ebe2eb093c649997267058.jpg331d308d98426b96576153db6a9c7b29.jpg

This all refers to your "I had a nice inferno going in there. Very stoked."

Word play and puns. Some of my favorite things when it comes to humor. A LOT of times it does just like 'ol Foghorn said and blows right past people.

Looks like you're making some serious headway on the burner setup. It'll be interesting how it all works out.

I was making progress. I had the tractor battery out to charge it because it was low and after reassembly I was running across the yard and it stopped dead with smoke rolling out from the cowl. Quick thinking pulled the battery cable and stopped a bad day. The battery wire to the switch was fried. Found the line to the alternator was grounded. Now I'm stopped on the boiler the day before Easter to fix that mess so I can put it back in the barn. Supposed to be very cold tonight and tomorrow. I can't win.

Yup, I was hoping to get something accomplished tomorrow but like you said. Suppose to be cold tonight and tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the tractor. At least it didn't burn it to the ground.

After it got dark, took a much needed break from the burner to torch some mounts off this tank mount. Bought the tank at auction for 12 dollars. The mount plate will make a perfect duplex base compressor mount. I just had to take a break from the burner. It's been a long time working on that thing.3ee2c2994eb65b958c23895f8589694e.jpg

Today I spent running around looking for wiring items to fix the tractor. Ended up ordering some online. Rain expected tonight then snow after so I cleaned up and tarped it. Moved indoors. Cleaned some. Knocked the studs off the base plate and ground flat then threw the compressors and motors on to evaluate. Looks like a winner. Now I just have to figure out where to put the thing. Thought about pallet racking by the door. Also on top of the bathroom. Service is a consideration. With them flipped side to side, I need to get at both sides. Still deciding. Total amp draw is about 30 so I can put it pretty much anywhere without too much cost.

After that I worked on the wiring for the blower by adding a box to throw the transformer in, and conduit, then cleaned around the boiler and drilled holes to hold the flue in the boiler. 96807027b0774be9a2eccab7bb9e2335.jpg8410cfe26549d5bdcb9988c452b91b0f.jpg873561850ff421d6d9cb9c40bb3b1868.jpgb5f05ca54991d136ecc946cdbee2cd22.jpg

Tonight I spent time welding up the pilot mount and drilled a million little holes to make a ribbon burner. I think I'm ready for a gas test burn.

Even if i had milder weather, heat pumps would still give me pause after the cost to run them on the house. Our electricity while not in the California league for cost, isn't really very cheap either. We're at almost 12 cents a kwh here. Fossil fuels rule here. Or wood if you feel like chopping all the time. Some do, i definitely don't want a 3rd job chopping wood. Neighbor put in a 500,000 btu outdoor burner for his house and shop. He feeds that thing like 12-15 full cords of wood a year. Spends all year cutting wood. Its at least 3X bigger than it needs to be. Throttled and belching smoke all the time. Ask me how i feel about it... lol.

Yes buuuuut... I only turn it on when I'm knowing I'll use it (the house runs a lot more) so it isn't really that expensive, and my unit was installed in some hours of work, and my upkeep is minimal now, and it works in the summer too. You'll be cleaning the orifices, filtering the oil, going to get more oil, etc which does have a time impact. And you'll still sweat in the summer. I understand the outlay of funds is less than buying a unit like I have, and I also understand your space is much larger than mine. I'm sure you'll work it out so it is a great thing in the end, but you'll have spent quite a bit of time on it, which kind of is your third job right now!

I think it will be great when finished and you have an automated waste oil burner with essentially free (plus whatever your time is worth to go and get it) fuel, and you'll be able to tell everyone how you can heat a 35,000 CF building for nothing with an automated system that cost you less than $1000 or whatever it ends up costing out of pocket. I'm simply remarking that I know it has been a lot of effort, head scratching, thinking, research, parts scrounging, searching on CL, etc. I know I couldn't pull it off, and the DIY part of something so cool and important is what this board is all about. That's why I say I'm glad I could make use of a heat pump. I'm giving you a long winded compliment. :)

Gotcha. Sorry I didn't see it.

Spent some time tonight finishing the gas line. If I had been thinking I would have put the gas valve on the other side of the main pipe. I'm sure you all see why. Still need to expand the hole for the spark wire and put the insulation in and mount it up. The pilot burner portion is done. I'm not aware of anyone else anywhere with an auto start dual fuel oil drip burner. I hope that isn't because I'm crazy. Doh!

We got all the parts for the preheat tank cut out but my buddy didn't get a chance to break everything and weld it up. Hopefully Monday.20180405_203027.jpg20180405_211244.jpg20180406_210659.jpg20180406_072539.jpg

Got the burner done and mounted back up and connected to everything and it doesn't work like I wanted it to. The pilot lights and then the main burner comes on and mostly burns up at the pilot. I think maybe the holes I drilled in my ribbon burner are too big. Which is not good news because I can't drill them any smaller. I may have to go to something else. Dangit.20180407_143119.jpg20180407_143127.jpg20180407_143324.jpg20180407_143607.jpg20180407_144449.jpg20180407_151736.jpg

I can't drill them any smaller. I think the plan has derailed for this year and the new plan is finish the oil side, controls, and develop a new single orifice flamethrower to be lit by the pilot and running at higher pressure. I'll have to work on it over the summer. I'll model after foundry burners. It's a bummer, but I hadn't seen anything like this anywhere so I knew it may pose challenges.

And we are back online after falling off a ladder and crushing my phone to pieces. Been cleaning around the bathroom and ran out of somewhere to put the stereo. I tried to haul it up a ladder in the roll around caddy and just didnt have the strength to get it all the way up onto the bathroom. It pulled me down onto the floor. Phone was toast so had to get a new one.

Today was just a beat down.

I am not a fan of ladders and even more so as I get older as the joints and bones aren’t as flexible now! Glad to hear you are OK and that it was just the phone that took the crushing and not the bones!

Thanks. I did put a hole in my elbow but a bandage seems to be handling it. I'm getting close to 50 and liking ladders less and less. Ill try to update later.

Today was day three of the beat down. Saturday fell off the ladder. Sunday lost power. Genset had a leaky fuel tank. Power to be restored at 1130pm. At 11pm get new notice of another 24hrs. Monday I had to drive to Ann arbor to pickup our lease car. Longest traffic jam I ever sat in. One lane freeway with zero ongoing work. Stopped at work for a minute. Working on a 5gal bucket fuel tank. Run around like a headless chicken for hours. On the way back home notice the road work barrels are removed. Get home to get genset hooked up and the power comes back on. Finish genset work. Fire up all the house systems. Firewall doesnt come back up. Throw in the towel and make dinner. Firewall fixed at 930pm. At least the shower water is hot. Sigh.

Photos of the musical chairs I'm playing. Need to find a spot to put the lumber. Would love to go vertical but dont have the height.

I lubed the car skates and they work awesome now. I need another set.3b90729871ae1bf7fef36399a30e62d6.jpg702623bc0381186debdf10b23d111c33.jpg

As another member calls it “Garage Tetris”.

The skates are usually a pain to get started in one direction, once they are all going the right way, it is a bit easier.

Looking good overall, hope you are recovering from the ladder.

Grrr. I'm cheesed. I had a trade going for dana 60 axle hubs. Ford. Single wheel for dual wheel. We traded straight up. He sent me chevy. Since he wanted ford and so did I I can only assume he knew they were not ford since they dont fit on a ford axle. Cant trust people these days. Well except for most people ive met here. Some good eggs here. Thanks for listening. And beware on pirate4x4.
