This weekends list of non-achievements is the following:
1. Service daughter's Audi and try to find the coolant leak.
2. Pull my son's trucks ecu and install chip, maybe some tuning.
3. Extend the wiring for the mig welder to the opposite corner of the shop, weld up the cross beams that are all cut to length now.
4. Root out the wasp nest if i can find it.
probably some other distractions....

Cool D7. I have the bee suit on as we speak. Last hour or so has been babysitting the entrance to the ground nest. BOY were they pissed off when i started in there. No wonder i was getting stung. The nest is literally right underneath where i was dropping off some heavy stuff with the tractor.

Taking a cue from the HORNET KING on youtube, i am using a shop vac right by the entrance. The only ones that have been escaping are the queens. At least i think they are, they are huge. Must be enough mass to not get grabbed by the hurricane from the shop vac.

Also took a short stroll over to the front of the truck cab, where i spotted the BALD FACED HORNETS. Those things are even nastier. Looks like the beesuit is getting a workout this weekend.

On another sour note, my daughter's car has been leaking coolant. Got under it today and found the leak is a hard line across the front of the engine. That line has been discontinued and there are none available for sale anywhere in the world that i can tell. The alibaba folks will make me some if i order 50 though. So i am either rube goldberging something together or i am fabricating a replacement. like i needed another project....

Interesting! Fun stuff with the pest suit.

Where on the hard line is it leaking? What does it supply coolant to and from? Is it something that you could simply slide a piece of rubber hose over and fasten on with two hose clamps? Maybe a thin piece of sheet metal wrapped on the outside of the rubber hose before putting the hose clamps on? Very much rigged, but perhaps eliminates a project for this juncture in time....

The D7 is near me. Asking $5k. I was actually thinking about it (no, I have no need for one but that's not going to stop me!). Posted pics on the heavy equipment forum asking for details, and it needs a fair amount of work, so I'm not going to check it out. There's a 1950's D6 nearby for $6k but the seller won't respond to my messages...

Be careful on the dozer. What i found out working on forklifts is they tend to multiply. I bought one, and before you could shake a stick, there were 4 on site. I'm down to 3, working towards 2. But it's a struggle.

The yellowjacket nest is dug up and the vacuum is running picking up stragglers/foragers. I watched a vid this morning that perfectly summed up my feelings...

I am in the house drinking a beer while i sit in front of a fan drying some sweat off. The suit, while ventilated, is still hot, as well as the big boots i'm wearing so the little B#STARDS dont get me on my ankles.

The bald faced hornet nest is next, but i think i'm going to wait until dusk to increase the chance of getting all of them so there aren't pissed off wanderers.

As an update on the daughter's car, i was unable to find any 5/8" OD tubing in town today, so that means a run to ALRO in the morning to get tubing. We figured out a car plan for tomorrow so we all get to work, and i'm WFH tomorrow so that's covered.

Tuesday i have more veggie oil to pickup so the truck is getting the workout. I have a backup plan if i strike out monday so we'll see how it goes.

Went to town first thing this morning and got the 5/8 tubing i need for the replacement pipe. So that's today's top priority. Always fun to drive a 1 ton dually to town for 4 dollars of steel...

Oh, and the hornets are now gone. There weren't too many left in the hive. They are also big and a lot slower. Vacuum still works.

Well then i don't feel so bad. I just wish the truck rode better. With the roads in Michigan, i need a kidney belt to drive it around town much.

the old one looks like swiss cheese, and it is now in 2pcs because i wasn't going to pull the engine or front mount to get it out of the car. The new one will be my new design and not require the complicated install. I got 2 different wall thicknesses.
0.045 and 0.063. I'll probably do 063 just to never have to touch the thing again. Big question is can i get it done by end of day.

The struggle is real! I'm glad the guy with the late 50's vintage D6 won't reply to my messages, because I think I'd have to buy it. Then I'd have to find a place to stash it, and I think the wife would notice if I tried to hide it in the backyard...

I'm curious to see how this coolant line is formed. Do you have to flare the ends too? I'm assuming there are bends in it?

Anyhow, hopefully that comes together without too much drama....

Regarding the tracked equipment.... I get that they are cool, but unless you have a few acres (10+?) and a lot of dirt to move, they just seem to be a big anchor... I sat in a couple at an auction place. I could not get the larger (D6 or D7 or 9) to start as it had a whole touch screen interface. The smaller tracked dozer (Komatsu D20P) I was able to start and run back and forth a few feet. It was neat.... But I'm happy with my skid steer.. LS150 works great for my needs.

We rented a D5M when we made the driveway. Took a day, i had it for a week. I had some fun pushing over trees in the woods.
Other than that, it's just a cool man toy. I still want one, but there's no reason to get one. Unless i go into construction/excavation. Who knows, the way the auto business is going, i might need to. But then the azzholes running the place are going to want electric bulldozers, and we know how that show will end...

it's going to be a weldment. i will post pics when it's in fab. the material i had available is too thick for bead rolling the ends, even if i did have one. my buddy at work has one, but it's not worth it. we have a trick for making lines in the test business, which i will show in the pics. In this case, the only critical feature will be the hose retention.

And also, is that a Ritchie bros auction?

It was Hess Auctions in Marietta, PA. Just along the Susquehanna river. I've looked at some of the Ritchie Bros auctions, but it seems to get bid up for used hard, put away wet equipment. Hess Auctions has a lot of trucks and trailers on most of their auctions. Some consignment stuff too.... Be curious to see the auction action as the construction industry potentially slows down, etc... and rates, but I'll step away from that mud hole.

Electric equipment has it's place. To me, the big challenge is the battery technology. I follow a few battery technology emerging tech newsletters, etc. The batteries have a ways to go. The energy density compared to fossil fuel is just not there yet.

If I was digging in an underground parking pit or a basement, the electric excavator would be awesome. Or maybe a tight urbane area it might help reduce the diesel smell to pedestrians. Or if it is a large scale piece of equipment that can be connected directly with the grid, there are some efficiencies in large scale production of electricity over a power production of a piston engine.

But I better step away from this mud hole.....

Glad to hear the plan on forming the steel tubes. Be curious to see the pics when you are done.

It never will. It's an atomic problem. You can't get a battery to give up electrons for energy like you can get energy out of chemical combustion processes. Anybody saying otherwise is just fooling themselves. Liquid fuels are just way too energy dense to compare to anything else. At work, everybody knows it. We're all working on energy efficiency. Make the body slipperier, make the lighting cost less, make it lighter, which the battery fights you on. Its an engineering equation that doesn't work. And worse, you just shift the pollution to some other 3rd world country and make their kids die younger because they spend their short lives in a mine.

I'll wallow around in the mud hole. It's a lie. The whole thing. and i'll debate it with anybody.

Back to your regularly scheduled train wreck...

The stuff I'm interested in is 50's and 60's vintage (i.e., just a wee bit before touch screen interface).

Fabricated the steel line across the front of the engine, and i got the angle of the tee wrong, so i had to let one end hang down a little and use hose to connect everything. I also got smacked in the lip with the pipe and gave me a nice fat lip. I also learned i'm nowhere near good enough to tig upside down on my back under a car.

Hello my friends, yes it has been a while since i have posted. I am sorry for not stopping in. I have been dealing with some very very serious personal matters that are going to take a lot of my attention for a while. I am sorry i cannot share in any meaningful way. At least not for now. - I hope you will understand.

As far as shop content, i hope the following will satisfy your appetite for a while.

First thing i needed to do was extend the power to the mig feeder to the back corner of the shop. I did this by using disconnects that matched my stick welder extensions on the CV power supply.

The feeder reached back into the corner, where i was able to tune it to make some nice welds, the voltage on the power supply needed to go up a good bit. Once tacked in place, i pulled them down one by one and fully welded the beams.

Then after that, i cut out the center uprights at the beam level and now i am ready to get some lumber across the beam pockets and deck the mezz all the way over to the wall. Under we will be moving the tire machines, and the hydraulic crimper. And the bikes will be going up onto the mezz, along with some lumber. I also should be able to put the pallet jack up there to move things around as needed.

Theres where we are right now. I hope to make more updates soon.

Its good to see you found a simple way to extend the welder leads/wire feeder to get it done. I was envisioning conduit and wire to add another welder plug in, so I'm glad to see you went the simpler route to get forward progress.

Sorry to hear about the personal stuff. I'm sure we can venture some guesses, but probably not helpful or needful. Regardless of what it is, hopefully you can navigate it and come out stronger.

Many things are out of our control and it takes a bit to get our head wrapped around that.

I like to think of a phrase from the Jack Reacher novels (some are now movie's or a video series): Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Bimmer - Thank you, it only cost me a 100ft extension cord from the horror freight show. Everything else i had. So i am liking the setup so much i am thinking of leaving it and making a small cart for the feeder that i can wheel out instead of the big heavy power supply.

Yes speculation can run wild, but please keep it amongst yourselves.

Many things are out of our control that is very very true.
I like the Jack Reacher quote. That is what i am doing.

What model wire feeder is that? I assume surplus from HGR? I am looking for one that is compatible with my Miller trail blazer, preferably one that will match the Miller control cable.

On the personal stuff if you ever need to talk you have only to reach out. I am told I am a good listener. That being said this site can be a way to blow of steam and get completely away from the messy details of our real lives.
