86: I noticed the thread talking about how to post pictures off your phone helped you. are you ok with the method and are you using Photobucket? i had a Photobucket account and didn't like the changes. are you using the free service or are you paying them something and is that an easy online place to use for you?

one tip I've done many times when putting up pallet racking in my new storage units or I've done in my shop is put an extra beam across the back side to give it a little more stability if my first shelf is more than 4 foot above the floor. also it looks like yours in the picture is about 8 foot so i'd put one back there at 4 foot and 6 foot just in case you might want to add lower shelves in the future. i'd probably even put one at 2 if you have extra beams to spare like i usually do.

nice looking finish work and whatever works to cover the walls. were you thinking about insulating the walls at all? it seems to help not only with heat and cold, but also condensation if a space is insulated.

cheers

I am using the free service. It seems to work well. I am planning to put a workbench below the shelves. I am not using the pallet rack for the workbench because it would be too wide for me. I dont like 3ft wide benches.
I am going to insulate. I will do it later. Just trying to get setup right now.

86: sounds good. one advantage to having a 36 inch bench is that you can put some organizers with nuts and bolts on the back of the bench and still have almost 2 foot of work space. just saying and here's a few of the metal cabinets that i'm thinking of putting on the back of this 3 foot steel bench.

cheers

Walls and floor prepped for spraying tomorrow. Thought I would get it tonight but more prep and locating thing ensued.

Had to do some maintenance on the spray head, but the Graco is now at the ready.

And.... in 15 mins, the primer is done. Took longer than that to clean up. But at least i didn't spend hours rolling it out and still making a mess.

I'll target friday to get the colors started. Should be able to get the painting all done this weekend, and at least started on the rest of the uprights.

86: don't take this wrong, but just asking why you have the gap at the top? are you going to collect oil cans and put them there or do tell?

nice job painting and looking forward to the colors. is the picture posting working better and which method did you choose to work off your phone or are you posting these from your laptop?

cheers

drivesitfar,

No problem, i left the gap at the top so i could fill the walls with cellulose easily.
I've found on pole barns with dry fill cellulose that the walls settle pretty bad. i plan to fill the walls before fall, then finish putting up the top of the wall, giving the insulation time to settle. Then when i finish the ceiling steel, i'll be topping off the walls when i add the ceiling insulation.

I had to go back and slog around in dad's pole barn a couple years ago filling the walls back up and adding ceiling depth. It pretty well sucked. It's an attempt to bypass that madness.

I did this the old way, upload on phone app, then compose post on my computer.

Nice cabinets. I never see those type around here. Where you find them? Right now i was thinking that drawers in my workbenches was the most likely place to store hardware type stuff. I have plans for a bunch of drawers for nuts/bolts and a couple for things like nails/screws/copper fittings/iron fittings, stuff like that.

My last workbench that i tore out, i had a platform below the bench, it had totes, miscellaneous junk and mostly sawdust on it.

My new plan for the benches is everything enclosed, and drawers to try and keep the dust off of everything and better utilization of space.

I have some of those cabinets. Found them at auction 4 yrs ago and finally have a place for them in my new shop. Great layout you have!

I'd have rolled it. That much wall space took me probably 30 - 45 minutes in my shop, but granted yours is a lot taller than mine too. I bought a single roll of 2' wide roll paper at Lowe's when I did mine, taped it to the floor, rolled it out, cut it to length at the end of a straight section of wall, and was painting in minutes (after copious stirring of the primer). The messy paint drippings landed on the paper (at least 95% of it anyway) and it was a 30 second cleanup. I left the paper in place through two coats of primer and one coat of color (one application per evening) and ripped it up after each section was done.

I painted my shop in some good heat and my primer went bad and separated, so don't let it sit for too long.

The other reason to spray is the paint gets into the nooks and crannies much better. When i rolled out the osb on the previous section, i had to use a very long knap roller to get into it. and i still had multiple coats on it.

For the floor protection, i had a couple narrow pcs of osb i just slid along the floor.
Cleaning the gun isn't that bad. Just takes some time to get the paint out of the hose. I leave it with water in it if i will be painting within a week or so.

I've gotten pretty good at the graco after building a house where everything got painted inside and out.

86: I've been keeping my eyes open for these stout filing cabinets for the last few years and they are not easy to find. you can find a few on Craigslist, big company's surplus or I've gotten some from clients that are retiring from their businesses such as TV repair and other businesses.

here's a few more great metal organizers to keep your eyes open for that I've picked up and it will probably fill up fairly fast with all my stuff.

Wow, good stuff. I had pretty much given up on this kind of thing. I wanted bolt bins and saw some at a swap meet once, i think the asking price was like $400 for a bin. I quickly decided i didn't need a commercial bolt bin!

86: these bolt bins come up once in a while and i'm going to use a few in my shop or garage and storage units. if you are patient they are not cheap, but not the price of the new ones that are in the $400 price range.

since i bought several of the bigger file cabinets i'm letting go a few of these parts bins, but probably wouldn't work for shipping and just getting you more ideas. i'm selling the blue 18 drawer parts or nuts and bolt bins set ups for $120 and sold a few, but i still have a few left so they are not flying off that shelf at that price. i don't own the wood organizer, but if i would have had the space i was offered it for $250 and it was full of new old stock nuts and bolts.

I might have mentioned i'm going to start a Organizing 101 thread in garage gallery because I've been organizing ever since I've moved in and after joining GJ my stuff has grown almost out of control. my wife is happy if she looks out and sees my things organized and when i use my tools and i'm sure yours and the other member's wives are pretty similar.

good luck

She definitely wants to see it organized. It was so bad for years, she wouldn't even venture out there. Now she's warming up to the idea. She said she wants to be able to come out and do some woodworking. For her to be able to do that, i have to get it to where she doesn't need to hook up the wires on a 3phase machine herself... :p

But what do you store in big filing cabinets? Doesn't seem like a very good way to organize anything smaller. We do have a big filing cabinet in the house garage, it's full of junk. Hard to find anything in it too.

I'm wrestling with this question. Have two lateral files, 5 drawer, top opening. They're already full of drills, grinders, etc. The office/clean area has 4 four drawer units presently empty. There are also 4 approx 8 drawer card files for small parts. I have more lateral files available but trying to figure out what I actually NEED.

86: for the big filing cabinets you have several options from storing electrical, plumbing supplies to tools.

the smaller drawer filing cabinets are great for nuts and bolts, parts and supplies. you can get smaller containers to put inside the drawers if space is too big.

I'm going to fill up one cabinet with broken vises and parts or i might buy some more of the black storage plastic containers with the yellow lids at Costco that are $9 each to put on my racks for that. still organizing myself.

It looks much better on my laptop, the phone makes the pics too hard to see!

Drives, quit showing off, gonna have to start calling you cabinet *****. I thought I was bad, at least all of mine are full to the brim.

The big lateral drawers are OK, but I agree, the smaller drawers are better for hardware. I have a mix of cabinets and sizes and I would rather put cases and bulky items on shelves than in a lateral cabinet. They are great for the office, I have several in a small area and would be lost without them.

86: contrary to Strouty's comments that i'm bragging i'm just throwing out organizers i'm using or going to use. hopefully you are getting some good ideas from them or maybe on your own because being organized and having stuff is a hard mix.

i'm trying to also motivate myself so i can start leaning to the organizing side of the ledger and not the hoarder side.

cheers and have a great weekend.

Bochnak, sweet. I design engines for an auto oem. The bike is a 95 ktm lc4. We also have a Suzy GS850, GS1000, XR250R, and an XS400 here. Just sold the RM80. Hope to pickup Vmax, and maybe a GT750 in the future. I'd also like to build some custom non-harley bikes.

I checked out your blog! Way cool! I like the content you've assembled. Some faves - the XS triple, and the Husky. Dad was into Huskys. He had a mid 70s 250 he swapped a TT500 engine into. That bike was insane. I will always remember, one time my brother wandered off and got lost. I was down the road at the neighbors playing. Dad came ripping up on the husky. He said - " you seen Matt? He's missing. I say nope, he swivels his head forward and thumps off. As he leaves, the bike is at low revs, thump thump thump, and it just climbs up the rear sprocket, doing a super slow motion wheelie. Massive torque. I can still see him thumping away now 35 years later.

Got the painting all done, here's a couple shots of it.

Here's all the masking pulled down.

Turned out pretty good. the sprayer gets enough paint up on the wall that i just lightly backrolled and only needed one coat. I used about a gallon of white for the whole wall and a gallon of primer. Grey needed about 1/2 gallon. I did manage to get some overspray on the window and the jointer fence in spite of the masking.

I'm cleaning up now, and will get started on the welding for the last 3 uprights.

I'll probably be welding, cleaning and painting all this week. Then put up another section and some more stuff. I need to get enough stuff out of the way to put up additional ceiling steel.

Love the build. Great work. But take some gentle advice. You need to let go of some stuff. You seem to be in a constant and losing battle to bring semi-order to an insane and growing amount of stuff. Take some stuff to the scrap yard, sell some stuff, give some stuff away, resist the urge to buy more stuff. Said in peace.

Along the same lines of what blackhawks63 is saying once you get some more floor space and get started on more organization knock out some of the projects. That has worked for me, scrapping stuff, burning stuff, trashing stuff, then organizing more. Once you are at that point you will have some available space to put some projects back together as they take up way less space when assembled than they do in pieces. Good luck and you are making great progress!

I agree with both sentiments. The first thing i did to kick this off was burn a big pile of boxes i had saved up to ship parts out. That cleared a lot of floor space. I have a lot of parts to sell, but the clutter was too much to deal with and get organized to sell. I suppose i could have just fire saled everything, but then i have a big loss and start over. I have a couple projects on the list as soon as I can get all the racking up. Should be working on them within a couple weeks. It's already much easier to work in there than it had been.

Well, it's been a couple of days, and I've gotten the last 3 uprights welded up and painted. Should be able to start on the shelf beams tomorrow. Should be putting some up by this weekend!

One side painted.

Both sides painted.

I have had things like that, I ended up bringing them to a local auction. I did not make much, but the relief of them being gone was unbelievable. Sometimes the stuff is really more of a problem than the monetary value it holds. Just keep it in mind, heck you may even try just getting rid of a little of it and see how it feels. It was really hard for me to unload things when I kept saying to myself, "those are really expensive", well just because it is expensive does not make it valuable.

You would have probably cried if you saw the truck loads of shelving I brought to the scrap yard last year. I wanted to sell them and I had an idea of what I would get, well I ended up being within $50 of that price when I scrapped them. Even if I had lost money, they were gone and I did not have to move them again. I hope this winter things will be much better, I still have a ton to do, but at least I cleaned up a bunch this spring and did not bring much back to the shop.

Well, i have been getting rid of lower value things. I will likely focus on that for the immediate future. If it's not worth much, or takes up a lot of room, it's gone. Dense $/volume though, i'll probably hang onto it for a while.

If it is not something you are going to use I would set a time limit then get rid of it after that. I am about to start trashing hardware that I do not want to organize. The other way to look at it is make the high dollar surplus a priority to sell.

Well, it's been a little while since i updated. Progress has been a little slow, the weather hasn't been cooperating. The pallet beams needed to be washed and stickers removed on some. hard to do that in the rain.

did finally get 10 beams cleaned, prepped and painted.

Moved a big stack of lumber from the floor where the beams are now, to the wall under the window.

Also took a bunch of wood from here:

In preparation for moving the stack of steel because the first sheet that needs to go up is right above this stack (the original reason i stopped putting it up). I forgot about those 16' 2x12's there. Those will end up as decking on the pallet rack. Between those and the ceiling joists in the mezzanine, i should have all the decking boards covered now.

The uprights are painted and waiting on the wall:

and an overall shot from same vantage point. Floor space continues to open up.

Will finish the beams up this week and continue to clear up the floor in front of the steel so i can move it and put up steel.

Made some more progress tonight. Had the boy out to help me hang the next section. At least a couple beams anyway.

The overall shot:

I stopped here, because i want to get the radial up and running to cut the slats. I'm tired of the measure, mark, square, cut, repeat deal. Stop at 32" and let er rip. So i'll pickup a cord tomorrow on the way home and we'll get this done.

Then i will move the stuff from in front of the stack and get to work on the ceiling steel. I have a line on some scaffolding, so that might help get steel screwed up and lights hung.
