Great build, question on the insulation; When you replaced it was it bat insulation again? Aren't you worried about mice destroying it? Reason I ask is I also have a pole barn and am trying to figure out the best/most economical way to insulate it. Thanks

No, i had some 2" styrofoam in the walls. That's pretty hosed, my plan is for dense pack cellulose for any future. I believe that has some rodent treatment applied to it. I know lots of guys get the big wide batts, but i wanted to stay away from fiberglass. I don't like the convection currents that get started in it, i think it's far less effective than people generally believe.

Been a busy weekend. Had friday off, so we got a few things done, but the main work happened on Sunday. Saturday was just a rain day, we've had a lot of those lately, but this week is supposed to be an unseasonably warm week, and the rain is supposed to be off a while, so i'm going to make a big push to get the roof up if possible. To do that, i need to tie into the building, so the steel sheets needed to come off.

But we started the day with this, digging trenches and putting in treated 2x6 for our rat guard for the sheeting to sit on.

Both of us working while the wife takes photos of our backsides.


After that, we went to town taking the screws out of the sheeting so we could take it down.







This last one, you can see how i ended up changing the method of keeping insulation off the steel over the years.



One thing i found out was why my heater stopped working. The danged mice had chewed clean through my wiring that was in the wall. Why they don't knaw on romex is baffling to me. I think i will eventually get to where that's all i'm comfortable putting in walls. Besides copper of course.

Mice/Rats are a huge problem for me as well, hopefully you can at least keep them from coming in, then taking care of the ones in the shop shouldn't be nearly as much trouble. Great progress and I'm sure you are thrilled with it as well, keep us posted.

Thanks, I can't wait. This lean to is a big upgrade, it allows most of the stuff in the yard to sit under cover, empties my wife's horse barn so she can enjoy it more, and a holding spot for anything not being worked on in the main shop. Should be a big big improvement in work flow.

I am jealous of how blue that sky is in the first picture! It is always much more washed out light greyish than that where I live.

No pics today, but came home early and got all the 2x12 up for the attachment to the joists. Next step is tie the middle and outer structures to the main building for stability.

Old, we will not be weathered in 100pct by then, but what is there will be pretty waterproof for now.
I hope to be able to order steel by friday. Its only a 3 day wait and the factory is 20 miles from here.

Well, we got all the cross ties in and the first rafter set to get positions identified, then since we have a storm moving in, i decided we should close in the end that was open so the rain doesnt blow in the shop. Got it all closed in by coleman lantern.


Wasnt done 2 mins and the rain started.

My timing is never that good, I tend to finish about 2 minutes after the rain stops and by then everything is ruined.

Today is a lot colder, but i started by cutting braces and nailing those up.

This other shot is the first rafter showing the roof pitch.

Even with zero pct forecast for rain, still had to waitout a rain shower.

Yup. I got all the bracing up. Tomorrow i will start on the middle trusses. After that all thats left is the rafters purlins and steel.

Started on the trusses today, and very quickly realized that i was in for a mountain of angle cuts because these were to be floor style trusses, so a million 45 degree cuts that needed to be fairly precise. I've revised the plan to change to plywood box beams. I will continue my plan of top and bottom chords as original, but move to 1/2" plywood sides with internal cribbing and glued/nailed faces. I actually did find documentation on this method of on-site beams, and with a 20" deep cross section, it should hold approximately 381 lbs/ linear foot. That's more than plenty, with a 25 psf snow load and 5 psf dead load. will save me days of cutting.

So i finished the first box beam last night at about 10:45pm. I used 1/2" plywood sandwiched on top of 2x4's that ran the 16' width between posts. I used PL Premium PU glue, which should be structural, wetted the wood down prior so the glue cures well, then nailed 6d nails every few inches along the perimeter. I also put cripples in the middle of the section in a few places and at seams. It seems to be very very rigid. I think you could pick up a truck vertically with it. There's NO lateral strength though. I think as long as the rafters are tied in well, there should be no worries on this design. I'll try and post a picture later. If it's not raining. It rained last night though. I feel like we're living in Seattle lately...

2nd day working on the box beams. Got started around 11am, would have gotten started earlier but had to process a big pile of oil i got from coworkers. 50 gals used motor oil! Then did some yard cleanup and then started by moving the scaffold, and putting up the next section top chord. Then half inch ply and glue on the side.


Then nail in cribs and other side sheeting.


And done with no 2. Whew. Tired. Lots of climbing.

Got notice that the rafters are in at the lumberyard, so need to pick those up, and another setback today when i called to order steel from my favorite polebarn supplier to find out they are closing down in 2 weeks, no more orders. Now i gotta find a new supplier dangit!

Huge news today. Giant snowstorm shuts down everything, we have 12" of snow on the ground. First snow of the season and it's a whopper. Yesterday i brought home all the rafters and hardware to hang them. And today i picked up a huge pile of T5HO fluorescent fixtures. For less than $7.50 each, WITH BULBS. 5000K bulbs no less. Some are a little banged up, but the deal was one of my best. They are industrial ones, with 380-460V ballasts, so i have to reballast them, but for that price, i can easily do it and still save a ton. So i'm super pumped. As soon as the snow melts later this week, i'll be back on the rafters.

Ok, got a 120v ballast for one of the lights to try it out. So today i swapped the 480v ballast for the 120v ballast.

Swap completed.

First turn on.
They come right on unlike the halides. This is during warm up.

Like looking at the sun.

This is the only light on in the shop. We are putting up 18 of these.

The visual3d tool says 108 at the 36" level.
This is the brand. They are nice units and well built.

Got some rafters cut, its crazy warm here all the snow is gone. Old light ballasts are on ebay. Thanksgiving dinner is almost ready. Happy thanksgiving garage journal friends!

Nice! I didnt do much today, just got a rafter birds mouth cut and fitted for a template. Sposed to rain tomorrow, should get them all cut and maybe a few up.

Today we had almost 60s with sun, that is going to make tomorrows his of 44 feel really cold. I figure I may have another two weeks before I see snow, but I am planning on only next week, so I am scrambling. Once the yard is in order, then I will work on the shop again. I can't wait for that and I will have to say I am a bit jealous of the addition you have, it makes me want to do one as well. Looks like you were making good progress, hop there is no rain tomorrow so you can get some up.

Well, i had typed up a lot but my post disappeared, so in a nutshell,

My laser level was too dim to see in the daylight. Waited till dusk. Got the line set for rafter height. I'm a day behind now. Tomorrow i have to get hay for the missus, so i'll be busy.

The steel is on order, to be delivered, probably thurs or fri this week. Should be good to finish next weekend, then back on the main building.

We got the hay put up this morning, lunch and headed out around 1pm. Wife came out for a bit and cleaned up the area. Took a shot of me hanging a rafter.

Then i worked until dusk. This is where i made it to.

The rest of the week, ill have to work by lantern. Huge bummer.
Steel should be here by end of the week.
