Too much going on and too much rain this week. As of sunday 2pm, all the rafters are in, and we are getting ready to put up purlins.

Thanks. I feel like im so slow since pole barns usually go up so quick, but then i remind myself that i am working mostly alone, and its 1200 sq ft and i work in the dark a lot. Every bit helps right?

I'm north east of Albion, MI about 3 miles north of I-94. It's crazy warm here this year. I still have green grass!!!! No complaints here! I do think we're heading for cooler weather though. Long term forecast has me a bit worried, all the warm days this coming week are accompanied by WIND. I'm worried the steel can go up before snow hits.

The guys at work keep razzing me about my "lean-to" and how long it's taking me to complete, they all say that lean-to usually means about 20 sq ft and it gets completed in a 1/2 day. My wife said from now on, it's the MACHINERY shed. It implies more space. She's got my back.

Tonight i went out and tried to get the rafter tails cut, we found the longest one and cut it, but with the ridiculous wind out there, there was no way to get a straight line on anything in the dark, so we tabled it for the night. 55F in December in Michigan is nice though! Hoping to take a half day vacation tomorrow to work in the daylight and get the purlins up and the tails cut. Lots of rain coming this weekend, and cold weather next week. Running out of time!!!

Took a half day off amongst the chaos and 55f weather, we cut off the rafter tails even and started putting up purlins. First row done, started 2nd in the dark and tabled it was too hard. We will hit it again tomorrow.

Getting close to being done. Probably sometime in the morning, then we can start steel.

Need to be careful up there. I stepped on an unsupported board, it flipped up and fell to the ground, i followed, caught myself on some structure on the way down, saved myself from falling 14 feet. Bruised but surviving.

And the purlins are all done. Finished by 4ish. Since we have only an hour left before dark and several days of wind and rain coming, steel will probably wait a bit. 29f for a high next weekend predicted. Brrrrr.

They provide screw surface for the steel. You want them horizontal so the steel isn't. If you didn't have them, the steel would have ribs which would collect rain or snow and prevent runoff. And you would run it horizontal on the building, so you'd either have a 64' long pc of steel or joints which could leak. There's really no other way to do it.

Man I'm glad to hear you are feeling okay and didn't take a fall to the ground from that height, that could have been really bad! Slow and steady may not win the race, but you will finish all the same.

Thanks, i'm really glad too. I may be slow, but i am tenacious! Really really sore now though. It may be a few days before i get started on the roof again. I may move to the inside for a while, i have a drawer to make and a few other things i can do.

In prep for the steel, i ordered a couple more batteries for the cordless drill. Incidentally, does anybody have a good source for milwaukee V18 batteries? It seems they abandoned the V series when the M18 stuff came out. NOBODY seems to make true Li-ION batteries for this set anymore.

Well after much rain, and wind, we are back on the roof. Started here today.
And got the first sheet up and lined up best i could.

At 2pm we had 2 sheets up and it was taking about 15 to 20 mins per sheet. Might not finish today, especially if junior keeps wandering off ...

And as dusk hits, we're 2 sheets short of half way done. We'll hit it in the morning and see how far we can get. Thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow, high of 62. IN MICHIGAN IN DECEMBER. Warmest winter i can ever remember in my 46 years and i'm loving every single minute of it. I hate snow with a passion that grows yearly.

Edit: The weather changed AGAIN. Rain tomorrow morning and WINDY. Looks like our next window of calm is Thurs around noon.

I thought this thing was huge BEFORE I saw you doing the addition! Too cool. I dig your old tractor too. I'm keeping my eyes out for something similar for my place. My rotten fence posts have been asking me to get an auger.

motor,

thanks for the kind words. I like older stuff, my tractor is a 1957 Oliver Super 55 gas. Original loader, it's like a Ford 8N on steroids. I bought the post hole digger at an auction. I think i paid 150 for it, but have had to do some work on it over the years. Hit a rock once, broke the output shaft off. Made a new one on the lathe, and have built an extension for it also. I like it, but it takes 2 to run it really. The old Oliver 55/550's go for about 3K in decent shape.

Just spent some time reviewing posts from a month ago, i'm embarrassed how long this is taking to finish up. I figured we'd be done by now. People tell me i'm being too hard on myself, but i don't know. People put up pole barns in less time....

For installing the metal what I've done in the past that really seems to speed things up is to drill 1/8" holes in 5 sheets at a time as they are stacked on one another. Once they are on the roof it is just zip zip zip and it is installed. Best of luck on getting a calm dry day to finish it up.

Jb,

that would be a great idea, if i knew exactly where the holes needed to be. Its not that exact up on the roof. I think the slow part is that i have my son help me get them up on the roof, then 15 minutes screwing them down. We only have one drill right now. the cordless just doesn't work well enough anymore.

It looks like you can get Li-Ion batteries for the V18 series on ebay - new/used, oem/aftermarket - might be worth a shot :dunno:

by the way the machine shed is looking great, hope to add one to my barn at some point. I may have missed this but is the addition getting insulated/heated? opened up to the existing building? or is it going to be stand alone cold storage with a shared wall?

Hmm. I'll have to dig around there some more. I didn't find any new ones at first glance. Just old ones. Also, a critical note to point out, the V18 system also used NiMH and NiCD batteries at one point, the LiION stuff was a late add. You have to read the fine print.

Machine shed will be cold storage, shared wall. No plans to put a door or windows in. That would just be sheltered private access for thieves to break in.

edit: Ok, i did see a few new batteries on ebay. But the prices are crazy. For the cost of two new batteries, i could just buy a new set of tools. the original case had a hammerdrill, impact driver, two batteries and a charger for about 200 or so.

After the crazy wind here last night, i came out this morning and found everything intact. Woo hoo. Tiny victories. We got started and put a couple of sheets up and then the wife notified me about a flat tire on the truck that i had to drop everything to fix. Then the mail came and dropped off a christmas present for me. Ill leave this here as a teaser and let your imaginations run wild for now...

Well, we tried yesterday to put up side sheets on the shed, but to no avail, there was too much wind and each panel was a sail. Been very windy and rainy here the last few days. Today we're under a winter advisory, and there's sleet falling. Turning to rain again later, and tomorrow and wed are supposed to be nicer. Batten the hatches!

I would imagine that whole roof is a sail until you get the side panels on. You don't have concrete in the post holes, so there isn't much weight or skin friction between post and ground out near the end of the roof.

Have you moved anything in yet, even if just for giggles?
