Weird. I only get a link on my cell.

And it's not clickable, so i still can't see the photos.

I can say that I too can see them both on tapatalk and the regular forum. Maybe imgur changed the policy after photobucket shoved it to everyone.

86, with the installation of all those lights, that should make for some expanded use of those spaces.

We will be installing lights in the house garage by this weekend, my boy is anxious to get started on his truck. The wall in the back corner of the shop is shaping up nicely. Got it all framed last night and the window is in. Tonight is j-channel and putting the steel back up. That will complete all windows in the shop and leave only a proposed back door in the west wall. Thinking about a carriage style or folding door for the back wall to allow some flow through ventilation and some ability to move woodworking outside as needed.

Also went back and added pics of the lights in the first recent post. Check em out.

Wow great score on the lights, I bought 39 4 bulb t-12's for $175 and thought that was a good deal but then had to buy ballasts and bulbs, the bulbs were $125 for 150 of them so that was a pretty good deal I thought. Buy you have shown me the error in my ways, well done. Also I can see all of the recent photos. Go figure.

Thanks. Those are some nice lights. No hum with the electronic ballasts. I think they'll work great in the house garage. visual3d calculator says i should be about 75 footcandles at 6 lights. That should be plenty to be able to use that space better. With the three A19's now, it's only really good enough to get around cars. I did do some work on the tractor in there last winter, it was awful. I had to use a troublelight for anything i did.

I spoke too soon. Only 5 are t8 and rest are t12 only some are e ballasts. I'll convert all the t12 mags to led. Hung one tonight.

Still a decent deal, but I should have looked closer.

This past Saturday went to the US12 garage sale as we tend to do every year. i keep my eyes open for neat tools. This year i picked up a vintage porter cable router. Guild 1100 and a bunch of attachments. $23.
nu07pt.jpg

pfnGPM.jpg

Since then, I've been busy working on prepping for a trip to see the eclipse, have to rebuild our little trailer to support more distance and weight because i will be pairing the eclipse vacation with a trip to kansas city to pickup more pallet racking beams for the remainder of my uprights. Killer price.
Pics of the trailer rebuild here:
aspnmL.jpg

Trailer was a cheapo TSC trailer made from 1/8" 2x2 angle iron and it bent just looking at it. It had been severely deformed and just sitting for a while. Fenders fell off, plate and light holders damaged, just a POS. Hauled into the shop and sectioned out all the bad iron.
While i'm at it, widened to 5' for better motorcycle use.
qGUnaH.jpg

Up on sawhorses, setting width and cross measurements.
5p2c04.jpg

Then started welding in the base framework and patches.
ukIp5E.jpg

Then added sides that it never had for additional support and to act as a truss. I may also add some additional truss members. This is about 6 hours work cutting fitting and welding. Using 2x2 angle and square tube, 7018 3/32 rod on the new 330 a/bp. It's going really well. I will be widening the existing axle and adding better tires.
ZD5wtC.jpg

Will be finishing the frame tonight and probably into paint by thursday. Stay tuned.

Took a week off to go see the eclipse. Pictures don't do it justice. An AMAZING experience, and i plan to view the next totality event as well. My daughter was so excited she kept bearhugging me and jumping up and down.
TW14Si.jpg

Pictures just can't do it any justice.
After the eclipse, i ventured over to Kansas City and picked up this:
0phOL0.jpg

And after getting it home.
wbCjqs.jpg

Plan for now is stack in the machinery shed and continue to complete interior walls.
An important note, i have enough floor space and organization now that i was able to knock out this trailer project in UNDER a week. I'm really getting fired up to continue knocking these types of projects out.

Damn Man you were in KC, if I knew you were this close I would have bought you some good KC BBQ. Were them racks on FB, I seen some the other day and at a good price, nice find. Just one question, Do you ever sit at the door of your shop and look at what you have got done and thought to yourself "DAMN I am Good"

Thanks guys. Yes, i was in KC, i bought the beams from Warehouse1 in KC. I can highly recommend them and TommyG over there. VERY good prices and excellent service.

The trailer performed great. I put new tires on it before the trip. I was a little overloaded for the 2000 lb axle, but i took some of the preload out of the bearings so the hubs didn't run hot at all. The seals are trashed now though, so i need to repack and reseal them.

You are making me think about winter now. I didn't fill my oil tank and now prices are through the roof! I have a 500 gallon tank that needs to be plumbed up and filled.

I'm also going to put in a all-fuel chimney in the corner so even if i can't get the boiler built, i can at least throw a barrel stove in the corner and heat the shop this year. I'm not going without heat again. Too damn hard to work in the cold at this point in life.

Someday I will have a waste oil furnace. I can get waste oil fairly easily too. I agree about heat after you get really spoiled then you want AC.

You know, i used to be totally on board the AC bandwagon, but the older i get, and the more weight i lose, the colder i get. I don't think it is going to be a problem with AC in future. Even 90's doesn't bother me much anymore.

I use mine, but I really need a dehumidifier and AC. I am not too old and definitely not too skinny to resize the disadvantages of artificial cool, at least not yet.

Ah, i got a message from my brother that he hadn't seen an update in a while, so i thought i would check in and give some updates, hopefully followed soon with some pics if i can.

We bought my kid a second truck, 4x4, runs good but bad body. We'll swap the body over to the new frame and just run it. Problem solved. I'll probably throw a couple photos out for that.

Ive been getting the trailer ready for some serious hauling. Bought two sets of tires off craigslist in the proper size, and had all the old tires taken off rims and dropped the rims off at the sandblaster. I noticed the axle hubs were dry in 3 of the hubs, so i pulled one of the hubs off and will probably have to replace at least 3 of the oil seals. They are Dexter 10K oil bath axles. Probably should attend to the brakes as well.

This weekend was supposed to be cooler, so i may get out for more work than last weekend. I've also been fighting coolant leaks on the Audi. I ended up replacing the radiator, and RIGHT after that, sprang a new leak on the aux coolant pump, which doesn't have any aftermarket support, so i had to buy a used one AND i also found a torn inner CV boot, so the axle has to come off for a new boot. It's hard to get any work done on the shop with constant car repairs!

Picked up some more oil from my supplier yesterday and it's starting to get very old having the truck idling so poorly, so i'm going to need to put some time into the truck as well.

AND finally, Menards is having a good sale on insulation so i'm probably going to pull the trigger finally and buy the insulation for the walls and ceiling so i can do some heating this winter.

Whew.

Sweet! Strouty! Cold weather headed your way...

I figured out my truck idle problem. I reasoned a couple of the injectors weren't firing when hot. Only two things i could think of would cause that, either the oil thinned out and the oil side of the injector leaks through o-rings, or the fuel side of the injector is worn out and leaks around the plunger/barrel when thinned out.

I ran the tank down to a couple gallons left and took it out and got it good and hot. Sitting at the gas station with the truck idling rough, i added a gallon of delo 400 15w/40 oil to the fuel tank. It smoothed right out like glass. Bad injectors. Damn. That's the expensive fix.... :(

Pretty big weekend here. We started on Saturday morning by pulling my son's truck bed off and getting ready for the body swap. He's pumped and surprised how easy it went. I don't think he figured the gas wrench was so fast. He's been driving the bedless pickup around the yard and loving it.

Later we did some work on the trailer. It's an old 30' tandem dually trailer made by Gold star in Kansas. For some reason they put inner block off plates on the I-beams. Anybody who's into trailers knows that box tubing in the north is a non-starter...

BTkc7o.jpg

You can kind of see some of the rust behind on the end there.

Since the wiring all needs replacing, and it runs behind the plating, i decided it needed to come off. It's not doing much structurally anyway.
k5fgj8.jpg

There's a couple of pounds of rust behind this one panel i took off.
oo19Bi.jpg

HU9BNA.jpg

pmeJlV.jpg

It took me almost an hour to get this one panel off. And my back was killing me afterwards. I think the plasma needs to run again. And that means the compressor needs to get rebuilt.

On Sunday, i was cleaning up the shop tools, and got a text message from one of the feelers i put out. Jumped in the truck and drove to Grand Rapids, where i picked up this:
XHgy2P.jpg

A vintage May Tire-matic 62B tire machine. In working condition. Needs a little tune up, but it does work. And it has wheels and handle on it, and is small enough to roll into a corner when not needed.

For $100.

I have MORE than $100 needed JUST to put the 8 tires back on the rims for the trailer. Everything after that is gravy. And since i have over 10 cars worth of tires to get pulled off before i can scrap them, i figure this thing will pay for itself about 5 times in the next year.

I'm fairly pumped about that machine. I'll post more when i get it into the shop.

Nice score on the tire machine, I eventually want one too. As for the plasma cutter, I hear you loud and clear I do need to rebuild my air compressor. Wait, you were talking about you? JK, but I am in the exact same boat, 20 PSI just doesn’t seem to work for anything.

I have about had it with rust. I still have a few things to deal with that are rusty, but over the next few years I am going to buy all southern replacements. Then I am going to be the fluid film champion of the north! Good luck with all those tires and don’t overdo the back, mine is a bit past sore this morning.

Lol. We do seem to have the same problems don't we? Does that fluid film work? I'd like to find a way to knock down the rust around this place.

It works, but a lot better if starting with no rust. I am going to use a mix of used motor oil and diesel to spray the rusty undersides of stuff. It works better than anything else. Think old truck - rotted out everywhere except where the oil leaks are. My plan is to layout a tarp, drive the vehicle on it, spray the **** out of it, then use absorbent to clean up and toss the entire tarp. I have a coconut based absorbent that is so good, even California lets you toss it in the regular trash after it has absorbed oils. I don't think I can get much better than that. When using the fluid film, it needs to be applied twice a year, we usually just spritz it during the oil changes. Ultimately I will end up with a winter vehicle and won't drive my nice stuff in the winter at all. It used to be you could go to the carwash and have the underbody blast clean off the salt, but now that they are recycling everything, I am willing to bet you get blasted with watered down calcium chloride.

I think you can sign up to be a distributor and get better pricing, my buddy did that. I just had him do anything related to the fluid film. I would do it outside, the stuff smells funny. I used to use amsoil metal protector, it smells like coconuts and it was easy enough to find at NAPA, about $7 a can, 5 cans will do an entire vehicle easy enough, then just touch things up at the oil changes. many ways to keep it at bay, best one is to not drive it in the winter or just move.

Well I'm going to chime in about Fluid Film. I repaired quite a bit of rust on one of my vehicles a few years ago. Doused all of the inner panels with Fluid Film, along with the underside.

The stuff does creep. The outer lower edges of both doors and the hatchback has evidence of Fluid Film that crept thru the seems and onto the outer skin.

It's lanolin based and can be bought in spray cans at Autozone. Ain't cheap but it's dang good stuff.

Ok, so this happened over the weekend. Picked up a stack of plywood from craigslist for cheap, which will finish off the walls along with the rest of the stuff i have sitting around, and then took advantage of a big sale and rebate at mendards to pickup ALL of the insulation i need for the building, minus the big door styrofoam.

Got a great deal on the insulation, easily the cheapest i've seen it in 20 years. Unfortunately, now i'm swimming in the stuff and it's a lot harder to move around the shop again. i think i'm going to leave the remainder on the trailer and put under the leanto for now.

Now the race is on to finish the inside before i need to heat this year. I WILL be heating the building this year, one way or another!ee46af88020ffc71cc4a21f118841f20.jpge94332ccb82ae6f14ab56945d6bbf51a.jpg969be9503c79936fed6b8c68a8c75c27.jpg

That is definitely a lot of insulation. Now you have to move everything away from the walls again! :willy_nil
True, but everything is on wheels or has a space to get at the walls still, so it won't be that bad i think. The only bad spots will be back in the woodshop area where i have a lot of wood against the walls. that HAS to move. I knew this would be a musical chairs problem before i started, but the alternative is to just get rid of everything so i have to do it.

ARRRRRGH!!!!

Major bad news. I have been working on/off again on getting my compressor fixed this month. As some of you know the reason my shop thread is named the 50HP thread is due to the massive phase converter i use to run my air compressor, a 1968 Curtis D97 10HP compressor. I got it cheap, and it's had problems i've been avoiding for a while.

I've had the thing apart for a few years while i worked on the shop and used other compressors. I knew it had to have a valve job done, but didn't know the extent of the pumps issues until recently. I took the cylinder and pistons to work to have them evaluated, we measured the piston / bore clearance on the low pressure side at 37 thou. WAAAY over stock. My options were to sleeve the bore, which i found out was going to cost about 300. OR to get a new piston oversized. OR to just run it. I decided to just run it and see how well it would last with the high clearance and the new valve job.

I ran around with the stuff in the back of my car for a week and tonight decided to pull it all out so i could get it back into the shop. As i was pulling the cylinder out of the car, i didn't notice the high pressure piston stuck in the bore as i pulled it out of the car, UNTIL the cylinder was out of the car and over the concrete. Being cast iron, when it hit the concrete, it broke a ring land.

GRRRR.

PHoto of the destruction
poPvl2Hwj

So with the several hundred dollar broken piston, a valve job kit, gasket kit, and sleeve it really needs, it probably no longer makes sense to rebuild this pump.

So that brings me to a crossroads. I need to come up with something so i can complete some tasks this winter. WHAT makes sense? The prospect of changing directions here opens up a can of worms, maybe it no longer makes sense to try to use a 10HP compressor and a phase converter? Or go to two smaller pumps? Twin 5HP pumps controlled by the PLC occured to me. I could run one at a time and even rotate them and only bring the 2nd online when demand is needed. Lots of options here.

AND if i go with smaller comps, i wouldn't need to run the big converter. I could even downsize the converter.

thoughts?

That carnage is awful. I too am in compressor limbo, have been since 2014. It all depends on what you are planning on using your air for. I have a large blast cabinet and run a 1” impact, so I personally want a larger pump.

I'm not opposed to a large pump, just to paying full retail for 10HP worth of air. Large blast cabinets, impacts and air/arc usage here. I can't use anything less than about 7.5-10hp air.

I've found a few pumps, and could go that way if they are the right size. Know anything about OLD quincys?
