How does the flashing seal to the class-a? Most need a storm collar there.
There wasn't a storm collar in that shot. I didn't have the right caulk on the shelf so i had to run to town and get some prior to putting the storm collar on. It's done now.

Does anyone that has installed chimney in a pole barn know what type of interior finishing plate or beauty ring or whatever to use on a 3-rib steel ceiling? A search of GJ and the internet in general, i couldn't find anything about how to finish off the ceiling penetration.

Been futzing around with the compressor tank lately, i've got it setup on a spit to use gravel to clean the inside. I covered that on my compressor tank thread.

Tonight i'm going to finish the chimney interior install and get the exterior of the building buttoned back up for winter and if i have any time left, get some more cleaning and prepping for finishing walls done. I'm off work all next week, so i'm going to enlist my boy to help and we'll see if we can get the walls done.

So tonight i worked on the last of the chimney install. Cut the hole in the ceiling steel and put up the last chunk of the class a stuff. Insulation shield, framing around the shield, and buttoned the exterior back up. LOT of work. Finished around quarter to 11. Tired. Whew.

Now i'm ready for the rain coming in today and the exterior is weather proof again. Feels good.

Once you actually get heat in a building production goes up a heck of a lot, and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Good job on your shop.

Thanks lesser, while we wait out the rain to spin the compressor tank, got back to work on the wall prep for insulation.

Also did some sorting of parts for sale and posted a few items on facebook. Going to try and avoid epay as long as possible.

Back at it again after a small break out of town for work. I actually got caught in the big snow storm down in the south. I was actually living "Planes, trains, and automobiles". We ended up having to drive from Montgomery Alabama through the storm and got back after 24 hrs driving.

Back at the walls, i finished up the corner and just have to hang a couple of sheets of drywall tonight then move onto the next set of walls. I'm actually getting closer to being able to blow insulation!

I also got the boiler moved inside and finished the air compressor tank r/r as well as picking up the last of the stove pipe. I have to wait to complete the boiler install until I get the last of the mezzanine unloaded and the structure pulled down to place the boiler. Shooting for heating up around Christmas/New Years.

The WINTER sure has hit. It's been COOOOOLD out there last couple days. I think it's running around 18-20 degrees right now. And forecast for single digit this week! Brrrr.

So were you John Candy or Steve Martin?

What did you end up doing to the tank?
Candy, of course! ;P

I had a lot of problems with the pipe sections unthreading because, of course, the PTO on the tractor unscrews them. So i had tack welded the pipe onto the ******* about 5 times and it kept breaking the welds. I finally got enough on there to hold so i got about an hour of turn time on it, then the pipe on the non-driven end fatigued and broke off. The tank ended up stopping rather abruptly and broke the counterweights i had on the feet. I did manage to polish the inside a good bit, and at this point, i called it good. I have to weld some legs on it and have already cleared out the spot in the lean-to where it will sit. I'll wait till some other time to paint it up. Right now i just need the air more than anything.

Pics of the recent progress for attention.

Sounds like the tank was a bit of an ordeal. You really do not want to weld to the tank, it can cause issues and more issues if things are not done right. I don’t want to be the pressure tank police, but be careful.

No, I was going to weld the legs to the mounting hardware and motor base. Very far from the tank.

Yeah, i figured it was far safer than trying to weld on the tank. It'll look goofy and be heavier, but its not like i'm moving it much. I'll post pics when i get to it. Maybe this weekend.

I finished moving the bookcases last night and both of them bit the dust. So most of my car manuals and magazines are sitting on the concrete now. Not sure what i'm going to do with them. What do you all do for manual storage?

I cleared the wall so i could get in there and remove the foam confetti the mice made. Got that all out and sadly could not save any of it. Shame, it was a couple of sheets of 2" i could have used on the garage door. It's burn barrel material now.

Tonight i hope to start a 3 day weekend and maybe can finish the walls this weekend.

I have some metal shelves for book storage, they are about 12" deep and are rugged as can be. I also have some of those racks that parts stores use for catalogs, they work fairly well, but honestly I could do without them.

Good luck with the walls, I am stuck doing paper work and power point slides this weekend.

Ugh. Don't get me started on ppt slides. I've been doing that for 4 days. And at home. Last night till midnight. Translating a report from Korean, updating a ppt with hundreds of photos and reformating all while switching between open office and MS office. And it crashed once and i lost 3 hrs work. I'm ready to blow my brains out. It's done today one way or another and i'm taking 3 days off. I need it.

My stuff is not like that, but I have about 10 people that are asking me for direction on what to say at a meeting on Tuesday night, they all get 3 minutes to speak to the planning board and I have to get all my points across while getting as much evidence on the record so when we sue the town it shows they ignored the facts.

It would be terrible if I had to translate everything from Korean first. I just have to translate lawyer and engineer.

Google does a surprisingly good job at it but probably because it's engineering rather than other stuff.

WOW, you've been through quite an adventure so far setting up a new shop, home, etc. I just found your thread and read through the whole thing. Great job so far and will be following along on your progress. I jut put up a pole barn this summer and whit its not near as big as yours I'm going through some of the same type thought processes about finishing off the inside and future insulation, walls etc. I will be learning from your process since you are ahead of mine quite a bit. I like what you did with the re-configured pallet racking and the tin ceiling looks great.
Nice to see another Michigan thread going.

Had a pretty productive weekend i think, finished another wall section, moved a bunch of stuff from the upstairs mezzanine and tried to organize a bit, sold a transmission, cleaned up outside and picked up some steel for the garage door and a barrel of methanol for the floor antifreeze. Pics attached.

I was beat after unloading most of the heavy stuff upstairs. The bookcases holding all my literature and manuals fell apart when i moved them too. i had to throw one away and one is broken but still half functional.0de36f0b4c81298c0b74990e1684bded.jpg23335dd8b053def61288d6dc7d933d71.jpg39ef48f40fd4ef2eb5f7b0926fd66ede.jpg147438f074f856c57ca0503c3ff2ab02.jpg

I keep working on it. Every night until it's done. I finished cleaning off the mezz, pulled up about half the sheets and pulled out some of the joists. I also got rid of the stairs last night. Tonight i'll pull the east wall and start to build the bathroom wall. Then the rest can come down. And i can place the boiler.

I went to an auction and won a few good things. A 3 phase panel so i can finally get a proper phase converter and 3 phase power system installed. Phooey on the extension cords running all over the place.

I also picked up an air compressor tank which may or may not replace my other one. Gardner Denver 120 gallon horizontal. It came with a HUGE aftercooler. For $12. :)

Also got a few other little things, but nothing major. Picked up some more oil for free from my restaurant.

Pics for attention.

Been just stupid cold here last few days, but I keep working on it. Took down the last of the mezzanine and am working to clean up from that. The bathroom is framed and the space is finalized at 5.5 x 8ft. I've been breaking down the old boiler and clearing space. More pics to follow. 915ad96def42ae0f1b785541ee660ff6.jpg9a2f8b522637c3da01bd4a3a08df4847.jpg53a35fb2f733e4b83a97bba294fc247b.jpg448ec2e7cbba844557df999b7ef757b2.jpgf607ce2e66161e1ca676da6cb970d730.jpgb6d1819a5823cfa29d82349baec8b480.jpg7e36a97e155a3a362ca71e261c23eab8.jpg

Some of today's progress. I cleaned up the wood from the walls and started to disassemble the old boiler. Saving all the controls and valves. cb0a4b70a221fcc07dbcfdda5383a076.jpg20c70c62d19847c1884813f2f5680f1a.jpg
The old boiler was full of black goo. And acorns! I got it used and I think it had sat for a while unused.

I had wanted to post more photos, but my phone kept boot-looping in the cold. I swear those things are designed to fail in 2 years. I'm looking at YOU SAMSUNG! I wish you could buy good phones these days.

I got the boiler area cleaned up and the old and new on the pallet jack and over to the door so i can run a load of scrap out tomorrow. Should be able to set the boiler tomorrow and start working on walls or controls again. My junk pile of hydronics was in better shape than i thought, so i can get the floor loop done with on-hand stuff i think.

I'm right there with you on the phones, I try to take good care of mine but 2-3 years is about all I can manage before they go completely to junk. I do have an old Iphone with all of my music I use in the shop for tunes though, amazing how well it works when it isn't connected to any network.

Yeah, I'm giving up on the flagship phones. A kilobuck every two years is insanity.

Tried the salamander to heat the area I'm working in. Like a fart in a windstorm....

Working on walls in the bathroom area. Lots more room to move around. Scrapped the old boiler and some misc stuff.

Here's some of the latest. Got the bathroom wall up and working on the back corner. Had to cut the vent I put in 15 yrs ago to rotate the drain for the sink I want to put in the corner. The wall in front of the toilet will have the boiler in front of that and a buffer tank. I cut out a lot of the old plumbing. I need to find a spot for the water tank too. Thinking about up on the bathroom ceiling.d3d155566dd961d9ce87ce355db80af7.jpg56e22e996cb08ab3770f600ac038e0cf.jpg7862e1b31e86e0f5c0434bc062001cd0.jpg

Been braving the breathtaking cold the last few days, working around adding supplemental heat to the house so we don't all freeze, and getting drywall up in the bathroom.
It's -10F in there right now. Uninsulated building soaks up the cold (lack of heat) and radiates it back during the day. I'm wearing everything i can to stay warm and it's still sucking the life out of me.

Did manage to get the important walls in the bathroom drywalled. Now i have a few sheets to add above the osb running on the north and west walls and then i can blow insulation. Original target was this weekend, but i'm going to miss by a few days i can see now. Too hard to pickup drywall screws with thick gloves.
