Spareparts, i'll give that a try. I spent the morning cleaning up the shop floor, and making a list of things i needed in house for the next couple of days. I want to get started on welding up burner 2.5, so i needed to get the TIG working again. That's the syncro 300, so i figured out what hoses i needed to get made and got those made today. They are in hand. I also wanted to swap PLC cpus, so i can do PID control of oil temps on the boiler. My cable for the PLC software quit. I ordered a new one and it showed up today. I moved into the 21st century with a USB cable! Whee!

Also spent a lot of time running around, 100 miles! picking up supplies for dinner tomorrow. I'm making dinner for the family. It's just the 4 of us this year, Mom is down in Florida, and i'm making everything low carb this year. Some of you might remember i have been on the Keto diet for over 2 years. I acheived my weight goal at about 1 year, and since then it's been maintenance and a lifestyle. We've figured out workarounds for just about everything, but Thanksgiving is always a challenge to keep it low carb. I think i'm smart enough to do it this year though. I'll post up some photos of the shop as soon as i get a chance. The floorium is getting there! I'd love to have the time this weekend to get a lift up, but i'm not sure i'm capable of moving that fast. Time will tell.

Happy Thanksgiving guys!

I'll be curious to see the Low Carb food. I've been doing a loose version of low carb....

I'm cooking a turkey breast and making gravy. The rest of the clan is making the other stuff...

Turkey, green bean casserole, mashed rutabaga, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, pumpkin pie. All low carb.

What does a rutabaga taste like? I like mashed cauliflower, never had rutabaga before. Sounds like something to do with a model T ford.

Been working on this the last few days, trying to get ready to put together my new burner. It's very slow paint drying weather. I'll upload the final assembled photo as soon as i get it together.

Good to see the welding cart together!!

Hopefully the new burner will come together for you as well...... I'm assuming that's on the agenda for this weekend?

Yes, we went to dinner for my son's birthday tonight but it's job #1 for the remainder of this week. I have all the parts ready just need to start fitting and tacking.

Tested the syncrowave tonight. Everything works as expected. Although the current does snap off a little sooner than I'd like. Might have to adjust the pedal switch.

Also plumbed up the oil fill actuator and tested it. Works good and quieter than expected. Now need to wire floats and program.

Took the pedal apart tonight and as expected the thing is clapped out. It's fixable and i'll do that tomorrow.

My boy and i grabbed dinner in town then got a tree for the season and set it up. Conversation turned to his truck and started an argument. It's taking forever to get it done because all i ever do is work ON the shop instead of complete projects. He has no interest in working on it, so it's all me. My argument has always been that everything around here that's affordable is clapped out rusted junk and that the only way to get something that isn't is to be able to work on it, but he doesn't see it. He's only interested in computers and electronics. Nothing else. I try to reason with him that he'll be hostage to whatever shop he takes his stuff too if he doesn't learn at least something but it falls on deaf ears. I think the car gene dies with me.

Syncrowave is cool. I'm happy with the 330A/BP we got, but I bet the syncro can do everything the 330 can and a whole lot more. Amazing machine for the price.

Thankfully my dad and I (and you) are on pretty similar wavelengths regarding working on the shop. Mom doesn't get it though. In about 7 years, we went from having a 110v mig, miller thunderbolt, a cheap carolina bandsaw, and a little woodworking drill press in the way of metal tools to a 330A/BP, 220V mig, power hacksaw, 24" vertical bandsaw, MT3 and MT4 drill press, Bridgeport, 10x36" lathe, 40 ton hydro press, 5 ton arbor press, soon to be a second lathe, and a whole bunch of little stuff for not much cash. Every single one of them took at least a day of work, with some having weeks of time put into them. No, it doesn't pay like a full time job, but there is at least some equity that we have put in that can also come back out. Being self sufficient is what is really priceless.

Does your son at least take interest in the computers and electronics side of cars? That's most of the modern day fixing to be honest.

I sure like my 330 too, but for the $100 the syncro cost, i wanted to try it out and i know the square wave will make it a lot easier to learn aluminum. The fact it also had a pulser, pre/post flow, and a lot of other bells/whistles didn't hurt.

Lot of people don't get that about working on things. You're building equity. RARELY are you throwing away time. Sometimes yes, but that clapped out bport you bought for a song, and loved back to fully functional HAS VALUE. And you get to use it along the way.

My kid mentioned last night he was scared about inheriting our house. "I can't afford this thing, i'll go bankrupt!" My comment to him was, by the time you inherit, you will get a paid off house, you can sell it for $$$ if you want.

As for interest in car electronics, no, no interest. I'm making a wiring harness adapter to run a late model 4.9L on the old 91 chassis as it was the only engine we could find locally for it, and there were enough differences i didn't want to tear down half the engine to revise it for the old chassis, and he isn't even interested in that work.

He's interested in computers, but didn't work hard enough at school to get good grades, so isn't getting into a college. I asked him what he plans to do on computers, he doesn't know.

My point to him: Watching youtube videos and talking to people on discord isn't a career. You don't get paid for stuff like that. Creating content, maybe, but not his usage case. He doesn't get it. The terminal generation. :wtf:

I have two sons, they couldn't be any more different in there interest in what happens in the garage. My oldest boy who just graduated high school and the carreer center (vocational school) this year, has always been willing/able to help out in the garage on the cars of our family and extended family. he has a good mechanical head on him and understands the mechanics of how cars work and go together. After high school he got hired on full time at the Insulation and drywall company that took him in on the school to work program during his Senior year for a good wage and has purchased his own VW TDI to drive all over central Ohio to the different job locations they send him to. He has plans to perhaps switch to the electrician trade but has other plans to work out (possible church mission) first before he makes any drastic changes.

My other son, has had his temps for over a year and has taken the classwork, but the driving time isn't where it should be and he doesn't ask for us to take him driving. Every time I ask him to come into the garage to help out either already has somewhere to go with his buddies or balks at even going out to the garage to spend time working together and learn something from me. He does however get excellent grades in school, plays in the band, sings in the choir, was on the soccer team this fall, and practices the piano which he also excels at. It's hard to force him into the garage when he is keeping himself busy with other good things to do.

All this to say, you are not alone. perhaps some day they will recognize the opportunities available to them.

I know, and i hope that someday he comes around, but i don't have high hopes right now. I'm somewhat of a polymath, there's nothing i won't try my hand at, from cooking to making clothes, woodworking, building, plumbing, electrical, chemistry, whatever, you name it. I like being self sufficient. I know some people are narrowly focused, but dang it, i want to pass along my acquired knowledge and there's nobody to give it to. :(

I need more local buddies...

Don’t give up hope, my son didn’t show any interest in the garage until he turned 19. He sounds like your son as he is a gamer, you tuber and enjoys building gaming computers. It wasn’t until he started watching some videos about forging so I got him in the shop and we built a gas forge. Next he bought a mustang and wanted to learn to take care of it. Now I get to see him about every other weekend for some time in the shop.

Working on the wiring for the preheat tank last night and kept having issues with the pneumatic solenoid buzzing. I finally figured out i had the nomenclature for the inputs wrong. I was opening the solenoid based on the input from an analog sensor instead of the float switches. Whoops.

It's supposed to get cold on Tuesday. I'm not looking forward to it. Burner is still MIA. I did finally get the welder done, and it works SWEET, now just to get some more work done with it!

Glad to hear the welder works, sorry to hear about the cold, Tuesday is supposed to be mid 50s for us, then it drops back into the 20s on Wednesday with snow. :(

Good luck with the burner, hopefully you can get the thing so you don't have to worry about heat, must **** knowing you have all those "free" BTUs and you can't use them.

Yes, it sure does ****. I was out there from 7pm to 945 tonight and froze my hind end off. Feet too. I got the preheat tank heater working and the PLC reading the temp on the tank. It's not accurate yet though. I need to get the scaling right before I can setup the pid tuning. Until that's done I can't turn the temp up on the tank and can't run the burner. Besides that it's not assembled yet. I need a week off to get it working. Wed is supposed to be cooooold.

Today was a rough day. I had training 80miles away. Today was the first day of my son's new job. He arrived in time but couldn't find the right plant. He was having a panic attack and fainted at the temp agency after he missed his start time. I got the call as I was driving in the snow to the training. The guy was understanding but sent him home for the day. They'll try again tomorrow. I'm in the car with him now driving to the plant and it's a dry run. I wish my family was as confident as i am but reality is they aren't. After I get back I'll try and work on the boiler some more.

Didn't work on the boiler tonight, did have a beer and tightened up the shop in a couple key spots. Installed a couple insulation panels on the door and foamed in place, and a few other loose areas. Now i'm researching direct logic PID loops. I want to limit the on-time of the heater element to prevent burning the oil. Full-on just makes crusties that clog pumps. Even with a 240V element at 110V. And it's the lowest density heater element i could get. Tomorrow is supposed to be extra cold, but it moderates after that. I've got about 3 gallons of fuel left in the salamander. Might have to get more tomorrow night.

Off to wixom in the morning. Wheee....

My apologies to anyone still following this thread. I have been out of the shop for a few days. I had a gallstone pass a few days ago and just haven't been out there. I was in bed all day yesterday and just made it back into work today. For anyone who's never had one pass, count your blessings. It's about 4-6 hrs of excruciating pain. I hope to be ready to rock and roll by this weekend, but we will just wait and see for now.

First off, no apologies needed. It's your shop, your thread, you set the pace.

Secondly, yikes! That sounds awful. I hope your back to normal ASAP

Thanks. It is awful. This is about the 5th time. I used to eat low fat diet like 20yrs ago. Low fat diets don't move bile out of your gallbladder fast enough so stones form. Now I eat high fat so I'm paying for it. Someday theyll all be gone. Until then, it's just a risk. Tonight is supposed to be 10f. I will probably go get more diesel fuel... :(

Have not had a gallstone before, had a kidney stone and if it is anything like that, I really feel for you. Hope you get back to fully functional ASAP we are going to need some updates. ;)

Feeling better now, made it to Battle Creek for some shopping with Mrs. 86, got most of the Christmas shopping knocked out. Amazon is a lifesaver though. Using my Prime a lot lately. Once i get this stuff all squared away, i'll be hitting the shop hard. I WANT the heat running over Christmas break. Too many btus sitting idle. Lol.

Just made it to the end of this epic thread; I was very glad to see the pictures start showing up somewhere in the middle of it - I'm bummed I never got to see a picture of your epic Ford ****** Diesel collection. I've heard of such a beast, but never seen one in the wild :spit: Did they run a Perkins like the 1st gen Rangers (IIRC), or something different?

I'm just past 30 years old and I can see the same habits for project accumulation and half-finishing in myself that you, Strouty, and a few others on this forum struggle with. Your threads are a good encouragement as you try to regain control of your workspace and fight the FSD - my shop is nearly as bad as yours for clutter and it's only going to get worse if I don't change my habits now. I appreciate you guys posting these threads because they're very relatable and help me consider how I handle my own projects and workspace in comparison. Plus you've got some cool projects going on. Excited to see how oil burner 2.5 turns out!

Hope you fully recover from your gallstones quickly, that sounds quite unpleasant.

All the best,
Justin

Thanks for stopping by. The diesel escorts sold in the USA used a Mazda R engine, based loosely off a FE series I-4 Mazda gas engine. There were 2.0, 2.2L and 2.0L supercharged variants sold worldwide. Just 2.0L NA here. They were not based on the perkins, that would be the S- series sold in the 83-84 Ford Ranger. That one had a cast iron head. the R series did not. aluminum.

I really need to go find some of the photos and revise my thread. Just to have time...

I am pretty much over the gallstone passage. Took about 4 days. I am back to working on the burner. I hope to have some photos of progress this week. I have successfully gotten the RTD temp probe in the preheat tank reading temp in Fahrenheit and i am working on the heating logic for that. I also completed the line to the compressor into the shop, so i have permanent air at the boiler. I'll probably only be working on it tonight and then off all day tomorrow to spend with family.

I revised the link in the sig, it seems to be working again. give it a try.

Merry Christmas to all!

Remember the reason for the season!

Blessings!
