I bench pressed a MK3 VW Jetta with its oil pan on my chest about 10 years ago.. I earned a non displaced cracked rib as well from that little escapade.

to this day, I don't think it ever fully healed. I still every once in a while get a little pinch in my sternum when twisting and or taking deep breaths like it has opened up and grabbed a little piece of meat in there. Take it easy and heal well. it took me at least 2 months before I felt almost normal.

Awful, I have an issue in my hand like that, it tends to break every couple years, generally in the winter when I use my palm as a hammer or to stop a fall after slipping on the ice, even broke it once pushing really hard on a breaker bar. I know when it happens because my thumb turns all kinds of nasty colors.

Get better, I am sure there are many things you can read and I know there are plenty of YouTube videos. ;)

Thank you guys! What i really like about the Max is the sound. Got a really nice V8 style cammed rumble. Like a lumpy cam 60's muscle car. Not the fastest thing on the road, but PLENTY of acceleration. And i don't have to be hunched over all the time. Big plus.

That doesn't sound like any fun, I hope you get to feeling better soon but know that probably isn't going to be the case.

I've been taking it mostly easy. Although i did have to swap tires on the car last night. I went slow and easy. Good thing i did too, inner tires were down to cords on two tires. i think i better get it aligned again. We had snow coming in and the blizzaks were the ticket this morning.

Oh man, sorry to hear about your recent troubles.

The burner test looks promising, I hope you can get the rest of the kinks worked out once you're healed up and back at it. Good find on the chimney soot before it caused a disaster - other than your rib :(

Thank you. I have been slowly getting out to the shop more now. I moved the tractor inside yesterday during the nice weather. Fiddling with the carb. I haven't touched the boiler/burner. I'm starting to feel better, but haven't tried lifting anything very heavy alone. I still can't sleep on my right side. Probably another month at least. I've still got plenty to do out there for cleaning and organizing, it's just not going to be anything heavy.

I tried sleeping on my right side last night. Made it about 2 minutes before i felt it pop. Getting better! Maybe another month.

I rebuilt the carb on the tractor. It still acts like it's starving. I guess i'll pull the rest of the fuel system and look for blockages. Funny thing is, when i pull the line off the carb, it seems like it runs free enough. I'm a bit puzzled. Tonight i'm going to put the cleaned out chimney back up and try running the burner again for a bit. It's supposed to turn colder for a few days and i have an out of town funeral to attend tomorrow, so i'll be offline for a couple days.

I am still around. Just laying low, lurking...

Lucked into a new bandsaw this weekend. Bought it after the flawless demo.
It's still in the truck bed covered up until i get the tractor put back together.

I didn't think i could go wrong for the low price.

Here's a photo from before i picked it up.

I am more motivated than ever. Sitting around all the time has made me itchy to get back at it. I have been thought designing my mower conversion. I need to get started on that soon. I also need to finish the boiler setup so i can dump heat into the slab. We're pretty much over the hump for heating season, so i'm not worried about it anymore, but this is the year that we get lifts up, by hook or by crook, so i need to do whatever it takes to get that going. I need hot tubes in the slab to see with an IR camera where NOT to drill holes! LOL. Should be a busy spring!

Ahh the Johnson Model J. Timeless saw. Will run forever or close to it. I helped a guy rebuild the gearbox oil seals on his long ago. It needs a gear lube other than the "rear axle lube" because of the bronze gearing inside it. I think Mobil 600W was the choice back then which is sort of an "older" product lineup. However, Mobil has some new gear lubes out that are also friendly to bronze in case you ever get that far. Would be a good first project for an infeed/outfeed roller for it.

I too am ready for heating season to be behind us! I've had a tractor tire & rim in the shop all winter and have done nothing with it....:(

I knew you would be along Matt.... I pulled the trigger on this saw due in some part to your postings over the years on it. I'm pretty impressed with it. The fact that it was made where i live currently was also a little bit of nostalgic factor.

I was aware of the worm requirement. I have some Mobil SHC634 around here from my worm gearbox on the garage door. Pricey stuff! I'm going to have to repair a couple of cracks on one leg, and it needs more than one speed. I'm thinking maybe a VFD and one of my 3 phase motors as the triple pulley on the motor is long gone. It also needs an automatic shutoff apparatus. What do you think about coolant? Blades are about $50 so i thought it might make sense in the long run. We have a similar saw at work that runs coolant, but the pans drip all over the place. I think i could probably engineer better pans than it's got.

I have conveyor roller track sitting around. Was that what you were thinking on infeed roller? Probably 8-9ft section of track. I thought about whacking it in half and putting the saw in the middle.

I picked the saw up because i have some heavy fab i want to do, including put a jib crane up over the lathe and mill.

I think that SHC634 is going to be great. I would choose your single-groove pulleys to give you a blade speed right around 100sfm. Have to estimate gearbox ratio just by sharpie marker on the blade wheel and count the # of input turns to get 1 full on the output.

My experience is most saw blades are destroyed by too few teeth in the work plus too aggressive feeding. I like to stick to the 10-14 tooth range although going to 18tpi is not bad. Something seemingly skinny like a piece of unistrut can wreck a blade faster than a 12" i-beam...eventually a tooth gets ripped off, leading to more getting ripped off, etc. I think that saw is just a pure spring balance and an adjustable dampener. If you can get that so it can be adjusted for fast and slow cuts, just leave it on the slow side.

I think I ran my first Wellsaw blade for almost 10 years cutting dry with a single speed of 100sfm. Just let it chew away :) I look for a little stream of silver dust coming out of the kerf to tell me its working.

The support could be a single roller, or a roller-bed, or even a sawhorse :). At our plant we did as you were thinking and cut a ~10ft rollerbed into 2 independent sections. That way it can be configured all-on-input side or half-in/half-out, or whatever we need. Simple leveling mounts on the feet for tweaking due to irregularities in the floor.

Seems like the guy I helped used a couple of Allen Bradley 30mm pushbuttons and a 2TZ die cast box for his 3 wire run/stop controls...there was something akin to a carriage bolt (adjustable with threads) that touched the red-stop PB when the cut was completed.

Jib crane sounds great! I am trying to get back to finishing mine off :) "some other stuff got in the way" = I picked up a press brake....

Yeah there's no damper on it. Either never had it or missing. I am working on finding a pneumatic cylinder to fit it. I know Dake sells em, but not going to pay double the total cost of the saw for one.

I have seen a couple of them with a bolt sticking down that pushes the off button. That might be easiest if i can find the right box cover. I have AB operators already.

I've been waiting for your jib finish... i need to see your press brake... we've talked about one of those here at work. I don't have enough fixed asset dollars this year though.

Finally got a nice day and some spare minutes to unload the new saw.

Bit of a size difference.

Bigger is better.534a742e6083d518e1fa1fda2323f102.jpg8cefc7b6ce76730c680a79326978c330.jpg

It works fine. I do need to do a little work to it, but it's nothing stopping it from working. I still haven't figured out how they get an 18 in flat on it. The vice only goes 16in.

I need to find some info somewhere on the saw. Maybe i can move the fixed vice or something. There are additional unmarked holes on the bed. It needs a hydro cylinder too.

I just had 4 days off. I went and got a 3 jaw chuck for the lathe and a couple of faceplates. It's starting to warm up, and i'm looking to get back out in the shop. I also have to figure out what i'm going to mow with this year. So monday i went and picked this up:

c2b4ee10c98cd15a3e1c4a1f35c1da07.jpg

It's a ~ '94-95 Woods 5180 zero turn mower. It was built by grasshopper for woods. Parts are interchangable. In good condition but blown engine. I asked the guy who had it how he blew it. His answer - mowing waist high grass. Slowly. Yeah, that's not gonna work. Had a Briggs vanguard that's in the truck bed. Plan is to put the yanmar in this instead of the white. The woods has engine out back, white is under the seat. I'm going to put the engine back together on the white and broom it.

The tractor has also caused some headaches. I found the carb float valve has been leaking and filling the cylinders with gas. :( i ordered a carb rebuild kit. So that's on my plate too. I'm thinking first part of the spring will be heavy mower work, then clear the shop out and start getting some lifts up, even if i have to pull **** outside. I'm sick of waiting.

I had my car aligned yesterday, they said i had progressed from 1 torn CV boot to 4... :(

I really need my lift up.

sounds like you have a solid plan. good luck with the repower on the new mower.

You will love having a lift available, I know I like having mine, but it is old and needs some work which I am attempting on my own.

I have been trying to figure out how to repair my low rise lift hinge while in the process of cleaning it up. I have the cylinder back and in primer, so I should be able to get the cylinder painted so I can reinstall it this weekend and see what I can do to get the corner repaired. fun times.

The engine will fit a LOT better on this new mower than the old one. And the hydros are much better than the old one too. The old one, there was chains from a little spocket on the hydro output to a jackshaft that ran the wheels. Those things popped off sometimes. New one the wheels mounted right on the hydro.

New mower has 864 hours, hydros are supposed to run around 3000 hrs before failure. When they die, i'll move to hydraulic motors and a pump. But i'll probably be dead first, 2000 hrs is a lot on a residential mower.

I cant wait to get a lift up. i'm so ready to stop crawling around on the floor.

Been a while since an update. I'm 6 weeks into healing my broken rib, i'm off pain killers, and healing up, but still taking it a little easy. Work is crazy, heck the world has gone crazy. We're on a level 4 alert at work, i currently have no way to work at home. Staggered hours and skipped lunch and go home early.

I have gotten the carb on the oliver rebuilt and i'm working on planning out early spring. Right now it looks like get the old mower put together and marketed, while i work on the new mower, put up a lift or two and clean out the shop. All of them or at least most, are solitary so with that and some careful living, i should be ok if nobody coughs on me. Cough cough.

Cough, Cough, oops.....

I am kind of planning on in house projects myself, I think things are going to get a bit upside down for a few weeks, then even out, if not, well I am thinking Red Dawn (the 1980s version) and I am going off grid, well, except for GJ of course. ;)

You just got 2 hours of your life back every day; well, at least until you head back to the office. Best thing I've done in a while.
