I have a favorite eye doctor, but he has no weekend hours. Last time, he did it during his lunch hour. And with Covid, nothing is open on the weekends but the ER. And they don't do eyes. Just refer to eye dr. I'm stuck until monday. I went to town and bought a face shield. I'm wearing my shield and my quicksilver goggles now.

I've got one end done on first ramp. Well except for some plasma gouging on the bottom plate. I turned it over and welded it on upside down so i didn't have to grind a 1/4 inch of the old sides off.

Ramp 1 is done. Now to install and on to the 2nd. Snow coming mon. At least everything will be inside by tomorrow.

Ugh. The things i do to save a buck.
I used the tractor to lift the finished ramp off the sawhorses. And sat it down on a Horrible Freight dolly. Then rolled it underneath the convertible. It just barely fit. But it fit.
Then i had to spin it around end for end because i was stupid and put it in the building wrong end first.
Then i got out the engine hoist, the tool i used to disassemble this thing and bring it home. And it became an exercise in chain and center of gravity positioning and repositioning until i got it upright onto the cross beams and set it down flat.
I set it a little farther from the offside posts than instructions call for, to make putting a Fairlane on it a little easier. Track width on the Fairlanes is about 58" center of tire to center of tire, i made the ramps pretty close to that wide. Not exact though, i wanted the car to be closer to the center of the lift as possible, but without making it hard to steer on because the tires were on the edges of the ramps.

Then i got the tractor back out and picked up the 2nd ramp and brought it inside. It's about 50F today and the temp tanks and we get snow for the rest of the week, so the plan is to do as much plasma work as possible today while the big door is open and then shut everything up tight and ride out the weather. I think i have almost everything i need indoors now.
Unbelievably, the 2nd ramp is even further gone and rustier than the first one. The latch mechanism is going to need to be totally rebuilt. I couldn't get anything apart it was so crusty, so i ended up cutting it all apart.

And now i ran into a snag. The plasma consumables are getting bad, so i took everything apart and went into my bag of parts and the electrode in the torch doesn't match anything i have. Nor anything online either for that matter. It's a puzzler. I am stopped at the moment.

Can you use a cut off wheel in a grinder to get the lift moving along? Not fun, but may keep you from getting bogged down with the plasma. I have seen quite a few pro fabricators use a metabo 6" grinder with cutoff wheels to do a majority of their cutting, especially onsite. Can't recall what wheels they are using, but their combo seems to pretty quick. Here is a vid I saw a few years ago:

I can do grinder cutting, but it's very slow and i hate it almost as much as cutting with a cutting torch. Not sure what i'm going to do at this point. I still haven't heard back from my plasma guy if i can modify my torch head to use the other consumables.
And i need to give an eye update. I just got back from the eye dr. he dug out a bunch of rust and gave me a prescription for eye antibiotic. On Saturday i got the splinter in my eye around 130pm. I just kept working, but did take enough of a break to go get a faceshield. Glasses don't cut it. Faceshield and safety glasses from now on when grinding. This is incident #2, and not going to be a #3 if i have anything to say about it. About 130am on Saturday, it was keeping me from sleeping and i figured it would really cause some damage if i didn't get it out whole weekend, so at 130am in the morning, i went to the basement and rummaged around and found a dead hard drive. Went to the shop and tore it down and dug out one of the 2 neodymium magnets brought it into the house, cleaned it thoroughly, doused in alcohol and stuck it up by my eye. I could feel it drag the sliver out. Pretty cool. It got a lot better by Sunday morning, but still needed to get checked out. Good thing, the eye Dr was really digging in there for the rust. He said sometimes you can avoid the rust if you are quicker, i should have been working on it before 130am. And he said the hard drive was a new one for him.
Back at it.

Did the doctor use a little Dremel tool to dig out the rust? My wife left the room when he brought it out and even from outside it was almost park your cookies time for her.
One of the eye doctors in the group we use is always on call on the weekend. My wife's second retina detachment happened Sunday evening and he opened the building for us. Surgery at 7AM Monday.

I will say that the Lennox diamond tipped cut-off blades are nice too..... For about $17 or $18 for a 4.5" wheel, I have been surprised.....

I managed to fix the plasma. Tapped the brass insert and pulled. It's stock 1Torch underneath. I should be in business tonight, no cash.
The Dr used a little needle/scoop and just dug. I couldn't see it and was numbed up, so it was just mind over matter to not move while he dug. He's got a pretty aggressive antibiotic regimen though.

Ah mine wasn't that bad. He just needed the little spoon tool, and it took probably 40 seconds. No need for numbing, I never felt anything. Just saw my lens displace a bit. Had I have thought/been told about magnets, I'd probably had a lot better weekend.

Tonight i knocked both sides off the last ramp, it's a fog inside the shop. I'll wait till tomorrow to grind and weld the rest of the ramp. Supposed to be warm too. Maybe the door can open. We'll see what happens.

Turns out i didn't need to open the door. It was warm yesterday though. I finished welding one side of the ramp and made some progress on the 2 post lift.
A little known fact of Benwil lifts from GM dealerships is they come with 3 phase motors. And that motor is not a standard. My lift was made in Japan under contract to Benwil, and has that goofy Sanso motor with a C-face that isn't a Cface. IE, not standard. The lovejoy attached to it is an L090 though, so there was hope. The mount pattern for the motor is a c-face looking pattern, but not the standard 5 7/8" bolt circle. It's 6.5" So to make a standard motor fit, i need an adapter plate and since the lathe isn't running yet, i'd have to do it at work or contract it out. I can do the design work in my sleep, but then getting that made is $$$ or time, and the motor i'd need, a 2hp, 1800 rpm, 56C, single phase, was anywhere between 200 and 400 dollars, including shipping, which wouldn't be cheap. So to convert to single phase, i'm basically easily at 500 or more. I took the easy way out.
Ebay, brand new 2HP VFD, made by reliance electric as OEM for Allen bradley equipment. ~ $100
Tested last night and works perfect on single phase input. Shipped from Chicago in 1 day.
Done and done. Need to order some anchor bolts and find the pad adapter i'm missing. It's somewhere in this mess.... ugh.

This morning i went to the Alro store to get some steel to make the release mechanism, it's a cam lock deal that turns a set of levers on both ends of the nearside ramp. the original was a ball of rust. I decided to make new.
I didn't have a chance to go during the week, when my regular steel supplier is open, a surplus deal where cost is usually about a dollar a pound. So i knew i was in for a real a** pounding. I stopped in, found that prime stock was the only choice for the 3/4" OD, 0.065 wall DOM i needed. Also picked up a few odds and ends to get the job done while i was there. Went to the counter to pay and was shocked at the $67 bill.
Looking at the bill of sale, about $7 in drops and $60 for the DOM. For 7.62 lbs of A513. I expected to be bent over, but i didn't EXPECT THEM TO BREAK IT OFF IN ME!!! $3.66/ft. By my calcs, that's $7.68 / lb. Robbery. And why i *HATE* ALRO. But they are the only game in town on a weekend.
I got the last of the ramp runners welded up last night, just need to finish off the ends and start making the release mechanism. I needed the DOM in place when the ramp goes in because i would have to lift the ramp off the cross beams to get it in. With a car on ramps, that would be problematic. The 2 post anchors showed up, the tap did not. The last of the steel is cut for the ramps. Make dinner and then weld it up after dinner. Should theoretically be able to wheel the ramp home tonight, if i stay on top of it.

I did have enough ambition to finish it tonight. Pic for proof. Had a bit of patching to do on the one end. Got a bit crazy with plasma. My boy had gone to bed by the time I was done so I will install tomorrow.

Thank you. I didn't get done until after 9pm last night, and everybody was heading for bed. Didn't feel like destroying my back to get it back on the ground NOR opening the big door with it being 22F out. So i'll get it on the floor this morning or afternoon and get it installed. THEN i need to get tires sorted on yellow car and get it pushed up on the ramps. I am SOOO ready to have those things stacked. The shop is a B*TCH to get around in right now.
I also am trying to get some more steel into the shop before this weekend, we have snow coming. I have 2 more projects besides the lift that need steel tubing. I am going to remake the door opener mount installed on the tracks instead of the door, because when the opener tilts down like it does now, it leaks. So that project will fix that. And second, i need to build the long awaited Steevo bench so i have some real workbench finally. The tops of the tool chest have become **** catchers and that needs to stop.
So it's this order:
1. Finish 4 post and put cars to bed.
2. Pickup steel
3. Install 2 post
4. Steevo bench
5. Door mount
And probably some heating work in there somewhere.

Ran out around lunch and got the 2nd ramp in place. Fit perfectly. Now i need to get some hardware and attach the ramps. Then deal with tires on yellow car.
