Thank you. I was beyond stoked to not blow a bunch of money replacing a needed tool.

On with the job! If i can find some time now. Have a late meeting tonight and tend not to get anything done on those nights.

Well I think that's enough carnage for one one night. I think I have enough insulation to replace the smoked stuff. Wow. 87453c4aa4903e1cc2bf903c1c3fb798.jpg

Cleaning continues. I can't find ANY of my 3 tape measures and i just used the big one. I'm losing it. Attending to things as i find them, but it's frustrating because i'm getting more absent minded as i age and finding it harder to find things. Oxymoron? Dunno. Still looking for the trailer hub too. I just don't know how 100lbs of cast iron can just disappear.

I did that with a bright red booster pack, my brain remembered "where it was", so when it wasn't there I started thinking of all the worst things, did it get left somewhere, did someone borrow it, in the end I had walked by it a dozen times. It was totally invisible because of my brain.......

Haha, funny story. Gave up and went to town. Picked up a new tape. Came home and started working. Found old one within 15 mins. Literally can't make this up. Murphy was an ******* and a genius...

Enlisted mrs 86 today and we put up the first big hunk of new door frame and I welded it in. She's watching the tube while I work. Tv has been a good investment.

That actually works both ways. About 6 weeks ago, I found a chainsaw in my garage that I forgot I had (I had over 100 at one point, so not too difficult to do). Nice thing about it is that it's quite rare and valuable, and I'm about to list it on eBay. Proceeds will fund some of my car hobby stuff.

Me and the Mrs. got both big hunks of steel mounted and welded in yesterday, and the one center connector. I can see now that even 11 ga 2x2 isn't enough to prevent bending. Deflection in the middle. I'm going to add some truss members to stiffen stuff up, before i open the door up. Can't make it too rigid right??? Lol.

Lol. You're picking up what i'm putting down... lol.

About noon today, the power went out. So i had to go to town to get lunch, and then just cleaned and organized my shop while it was out. About 330, we heard it came back up. But it didn't. So i checked the fuse at the pole and sure enough it was blown. So we called and got another estimate of 615pm. About 430, a lineman shows up, i wander out and tell him the fuse was blown. He looked at me like i was an idiot and condescendingly said "it is huh." then went and put the fuse in. Like electricity is magic or something. Jackass. Dad worked for the power company and he said a lot of linemen were like that.

Meanwhile, i managed to find the trailer hub, buried UNDERNEATH the detroit. Who the hell knows why i put it under there. Hiding. So that problem is solved. And i just welded the center door jackshaft support back in. So once it cools i will get the kid and we'll put that in and i'll finish welding the jackshaft mounts in. Then all we have is put the gearbox and it's mount back in and reconnect the wiring. Then hopefully we have no more leaks and i can leave the door open without getting dripped on.

THEN, i have to get the truck oil cooler resealed and take a load of scrap in and start cleaning up the yard. We are refinancing and the appraisal is end of the month. So it's going to be a very very busy next couple of weeks. But, after that's done i should be able to start working on the shop a lot more again. Hopefully we get to working IN the shop this year. I'll add photos below once i get them later tonight.

Finally, i got the garage door opener supports welded on, jackshaft back in place and bolted down, turning freely. Put the gearbox back on the jackshaft and it won't sit at horizontal or vertical due to framework, so dug out the boston gear literature and got the proper oil amount for a non-standard installation. Need to cut the gearbox mounts off the old framework and then that job can wrap up. Started my 4 day vacation, to be followed by 1 day at work and another 6 days off. Then the house will be appraised. I have a lot of painting and cleaning to do and little time to do it.

Onward.

Hell yeah! I've been working on clearing space in my garage as well. It is very taxing and difficult. Especially when 50% is my roommates, and he has set it all up to fall on top of you in a cascade. :(

It'll be my problem alone in a few months... For now I'll live vicariously through your shop cleanup. :)

Lol. Happy to have you along for the journey. I'm resisting going out in the cold to take off the oil cooler and cleaning the house. Gotta get a lot done today, tomorrow is a nothing done day, going to work, and a meeting late night with the head office. Won't get a thing done.

Good Gawd. I've been working on pulling the oil cooler off the powerstroke to do the orings as it's been leaking buckets. I finally got it off after 5ish hours and had to pull inner fender liner, steering shaft and BEAT it past the exhaust manifold and frame/engine mount. Youtube guys show just pulling it out ho hum. All Superduties though. OBS, not so much... sheesh. I'm beat and not even half done yet...

Gonna need some details on the truck!!! I wanted a DRW CC OBS truck with an IDI and ZF6, but ended up finding a SRW CC Super Duty 4x4 7.3 4R100 at a price that I couldn't pass up.

I got the truck oil cooler done, putting back the inner fender liner was a B*TCH though. No way that thing fits right. 3 hrs fighting it and only got 3 bolts to hold it on. 10 bolts left off. I see now why most of the screws holding it on seemed to be just jammed into the fender at random places. I've never seen a more poorly fitting body part. Something aint right.

Sweet truck, especially with ZF5.

It's rear wheel drive, right? Does pose a problem in the winter where you are? I tried to find an 1994 or so OBS DRW CC with 7.3 IDI, ZF5 and 4x4, but I don't think Ford made one of those. Would have to buy a 2WD DRW or a 4x4 SRW and convert.

Yes, OBS F350 CC dually only came as 2wd. I have the DRW D60 to go into it and a divorced NP205 also. Just need time and shop space. Centurion made some conversions, but most guys do it themselves. I hear they are quite sought after.

It's been a while, i've been working on the house mainly, trying to get it all cleaned up and ready for an appraisal to refinance from 5.25 %. That was yesterday. Today i took a day off and only worked 2hrs at work (some day off right?? LOL.)

So i cleaned up the tools in the shop, the truck has been immobile lately, i was all set to take a ton of steel in for scrap and it wouldn't run long. I found the oil sump had drained itself into the fuel tank. Blown injector oring. Wheee. i just changed those things. Even used OEM. I don't know what happened. I got the new orings in the mail, but i need to build a topside creeper, the last time i changed those orings, it destroyed my back. i can't handle that right now as things are ramping up at work to move to EV vehicle testing and i am directly involved in that and can't just stay home all the time. Soooo, the topside creeper i like is 1200 dollars. I think i can manage the fab on that one... i have a bunch of tubing already and multiple sets of casters. It's just a bit of time right??? That's what i keep telling myself... Onward.

Nice. I have the Dana 50 in mine. Dana 60 would be nice, but this truck won't see any ******** 4 wheeling while I have it so the 50 should be sufficient.

Fun working in the engine compartment, isn't it? I'm 6'4" so I just stand on a stool and lean over. I have the valve covers off mine right now to swap glow plugs and do a compression test. Gotta finish that up yesterday.

Good luck with yours. Sounds like a great truck, but they're not trouble free, are they?

Haha, no, definitely not trouble free at 271K...

I sometimes wish i was that tall, but then i would need a big vehicle for everything. My boy is 6'4" and hates it. I'm 5'9". I can't even reach into the engine compartment without a stool.

I picked up a set of casters and will spend a lot of tomorrow getting a creeper built. Today i went and picked up a Audi S4 interior for cheap. I hope to get to working on that "fun" project soon.

The main daily A4 is either getting a 4.2V8 or an LS swap. I'm undecided at this point. the 4.2 almost nothing can be done with it, no parts available. The LS, much harder swap, but pretty much sky is the limit on power and sounds much better to me. Decisions....

An older good friend of mine advised me a long time ago to get a reliable daily driver and leave it alone, do maintenance, but no modifications. I was and had been driving projects for my whole life and didn't see the value in those words. Fast forward to 10 years ago and I started DD'ing my wifes' old Mazda Protege. It got great mileage and very little repairs needed and when it did, they were low cost parts. Upgraded to a boring '05 Camry and to be completely honest it has allowed me to move my life and business forward. If I was still relying on a project vehicle as a daily it would cost me so much in time, fuel and missed opportunity for my business that the fun or cool factor would be displaced by the drama and stress that entailed. Customers don't care if I show up in a cool vehicle, they just need me to show up on time.

I suggest if the Audi needs a new engine, come down south and get a new to you rust free car, as much as you have going on from what you report here, you don't need the DD as a project along with every other thing you own.

I still have project vehicles, but it does make a difference to have a DD that you don't need to work on.

Thanks. Thats why i will continue with the 3.0 04 until the tdi development car is 100pct. With current state of employment this shouldnt pose a problem. We're mostly working from home with no end in sight. Since this car was available overseas it shouldnt be too tough to get it on the road. Im a little more concerned with the v8 conversion. Its probably going to end up a fair weather play toy

I'm right there with macgyver, I have plenty of project vehicles to play with, having a nice reliable DD is huge in that I only have to change the oil and belts from time to time. Mine is about due for replacement, 21 years old and 215k miles. I am to the point I only want to work on what I want to work on not my get around vehicles anymore.
