I, for one, am not sure I want to see the burner issue get resolved. Then what would we have to look forward to???

It's kind of like Project Binky -- once it's finished, now what??? FYI - if you're not familiar with Project Binky, google it. Amusing guys in the UK with mad fab skills stuffed an AWD Celica drivetrain in a Mini.

I've seen his videos before. That burner will have the same problems mine has. Any time the flame touches steel, the steel will corrode and burn out. All commercial setups have a conventional burner modified with a preheater dumping into a large burn chamber where flame doesn't touch steel. It's the only way to make them last. Mine would burn for longer if i had some combustion air pushing the flame down the tube from the burner head. Right now my burner head is open, so i can see the electrodes and play around with them. Yellowgrease burner is probably about where i end up. I'm committed to the babington, the thing works great and don't have to worry about the nozzle plugging and filtering. I have a filter rig, and it's such a PITA.

I saw his burn barrel video, he doesn't seem to mind replacing barrels after 1-2 uses.

Yeah he's developed a ton of burners over the years. I think that's probably his goal. I'm spending time working towards a
design that works without problems and is low cost. Maybe i can open source it someday. I think that's the goal.

Got started on the wiring last night. Made a starter cable and a couple other bits. I think i have a process figured out for the main harness. For anyone thinking - why not use the old one? It's completely unmarked from same size and color wires and in poor shape. All my gauges are new except the namco hourmeter, and i went from ammeter to voltmeter along with the alternator change. So enough changes to make it a pita to keep using the old harness, even if i could figure out the wires. Why is everything i ever buy a complete mess of wiring? Are there really that few people that understand it? My truck was a complete mess on that too. I had to pull the harness from front of cab to tail and rebuild the whole thing from 3 separate harnesses to get a functional one.

I've noticed that the burner seems to run perfect for about a 1/2 hour and then needs a 1/2 hour shut down to cool. Then it fires back up and works perfect. I am thinking of automating that timing and trying it out. What's the worst that could happen right? Maybe i get the place to 60!

I'll try and find time to write the code tomorrow. Tonight, i'm working on wiring again. I'd love to fire the namco, but not sure i get far enough tonight.

Started making battery cables, i don't have the right crimp ends for the wire size i have. I guess it'll be tomorrow for that.

Still working on it. The fuel line i was working on kinked, a trip back to the store for a bender resulted in more kinks. I found the tube bender i stashed away years ago, makes perfect bends. Now i can make a working fuel line. The battery cables are in process. I'm going to put in some quicky electrics for ignition. Probably not even do the alternator line even though i have the cable now. I want to hear this thing run.

SUCCESS!!! i gave the ignition power and hit the solenoid with power and it roared right to life. Runs great, no issues whatsoever. I found a few hydraulic leaks from loose hoses, but after tightening those up, no leaks at all. it runs great as long as i have fuel in the carb bowl. Initially, before i got it running, i found the fuel pump overpowered the float valve, but after it ran, it didn't. I think i'm ok to hook fuel pump to ignition. The engine is smooth and the muffler is quiet. I could hear the shop radio over the engine running.

BAD news, it maxes out at just over 8'. Good thing i bought the other mast for a swap. BUT i can at least get some stuff off the floor. I'll continue with the harness build for gauges, but i think we're in good shape for the rest of the project.

Some good news. I tried pulling the main mast cylinder line at the valve, nothing came out. I was assuming a collapsed line, reasoned that there was no way to get the line replaced without the fluid going all over, then decided to pull the line at the cylinder. After nearly getting that off, almost nothing coming out, i decided to try yanking on it again. I reefed on the forks from below, and got them to move a little, expelling a little fluid at the valve, tightened everything back up, and jambed a stick into the valve in lower position. Then got out a wire wheel and hit everything exposed with it, then greased everything liberally. Climbed up on the forks and rode them down to the floor. More greasing and oiling resumed. Started it up again, ran the mast back up and repeated. The mast is a cheap folded steel mast with no rollers. the Yale mast going on it is a very nice full roller, forged i beam design. WAY better than the Namco mast. But this will have to do for now. It's moving well enough i can keep going. Might be slow on descent, but i think it'll work for now.

I HAVE DRIVEN THE NAMCO.

I jury rigged the ignition and fuel pump to run on a wire and another wire to start, no keyswitch yet.
It moved, but only the left wheel would turn, after thinking the worst, that the right motor was chooched,
i noticed that under the grime, the brake cylinder was still attached. I must have forgotten to take it out.
Once i did that, and wiggled the brake shoe loose, it drove under it's own power forward and back, completely normal.

As of now, i have no issues other than it needs a harness completed. I will work on that tonight and probably a couple more nights, and at that point, should be ready to start loading pallet rack. It's a little short with an 8' mast, but i can at least get a first shelf loaded all the way around the shop, as well as lift the mezzanine and load motorcycles on it. Upper shelves will have to wait for a while.

That is a sweet little forklift! Everyone should have one of those.

I moved the Namco over by the lift so i could clean it's spot and less walking to the workbench for wiring. It drove easy. Super cool little unit.

Good job getting it operational. Now load those shelves up that you can reach, clear some floor space, and then you can finish wiring it.

Great updates, you may want to figure out a way to add some counterweight to it if you plan on doing any real lifting, would hate to find out it tips over at ten feet with the upgraded mast.

Actually the Namco had mast options up to 16' as far as i have been able to tell. Not sure they didn't change the counterweight though, and i'm reasonably sure the typical derating with height applies. I'm sure i can do some testing once i get that far. Heck, even the data plate on the machine doesn't match the mast. The lift height is about 98" and the data tag says 115". And it's got L2015 *AND* L1515 stamped on it, so it's anybody's guess if it's a 2000lb or 1500lb machine.

As far as loading goes, not sure i'm going to try that, it's a nice idea, but i don't even have an alternator hooked up yet. I'd feel ok with the jury rigged ignition if at least the battery was charging. since the electronic ignition is in the BACK of the engine now, if i blow that module, i have to pull the engine again. NOT a great design, but it was the only choice i had if i wanted electronic ignition, since the OEM Onan CCK one is long unavailable.

I will try and upload a video to my Youtube channel. My kid already asked if i wanted him to video me doing a burnout.

Reminds me of my high school days when I worked in a lumberyard. On rainy days, we'd just stick the forks under a load of something that wouldn't budge, and if the tires were wet, let it rip! We had all Hysters and one smallish Clark, IIRC.

HAHA! i drove forklift for a while in college. I had a big 8-9K Hyster that i would do reverse slam burnouts with. The lady that had the daytime truck loading job kept the nice TCM for herself. So i usually drove Bertha. I almost tipped that thing over to the side a couple times. THAT is SCARY.

I know you might be tempted to blast into the mast upgrade, but I would hope that you get some use out of it before you cut into it.....

Yeah, i'm not touching the mast right now. That's a spring, open door, Oliver forklift assist kinda deal. Both masts off machine, side by side on a table, heavy fab for the strength. I can get 80pct of what i need done immediately done with it now.

Ditto. Recall a few times that were really sketchy -- huge load of lumber and had to lift way up to get past one of our lumber trucks. Would've been a lot easier if the pavement was level and even, but of course it wasn't.

Yeah, that's part of why I searched for so long for the one with the mast I wanted.
Unfortunately i couldn't find one with the right mast at an affordable price point and i needed something by this spring. I'm never going to make any serious progress before i drop dead unless the mess gets cleaned up quite a bit.

Today i got splinter #4 pulled out of my eyeball. I don't know when it happened this weekend, and i WAS NOT doing any grinding. I think probably my shop needs a very very good cleaning. And i also probably need to be wearing goggles whenever i am out there. How i ever made it 50 years without ever getting splinters pulled out is beyond me.

Anybody got good goggle recommendations?

I also think i have another urgent project on the horizon. I need to get something done with the fuel system on the Oliver forklift. Either i need a new carb, which i can't seem to find anywhere that isn't chinese junk repop, or move to FI. I've rebuilt the existing carb 2x, and its still having big problems. Have to run on half choke, and it stalls out all the time. I've played with every setting on it until i'm blue in the face. And it's not like i don't know how it works. I have a very similar one on the Super 55, and that one is tuned to perfection. There's something fundamentally wrong with it. And the choke cable i have on it is way too long and doesn't move easily. It's probably 2x as long as a tractor model since it goes around to the reverse seating console.

In other news, i'm most of the way done to finishing the design on the new boiler, and am including a couple nice features for cleaning that will make it much much cleaner and nicer to do so. I'll share that once i'm closer to done.

Wiley X hands down the best safety glasses I have ever worn. I wear them all weekend and as my sunglasses as well. They also have removable foam gaskets so you wear them on a motorcycle or for grinding. Spendy though. I use my vision care plan at work
