apparently my phone pictures save at a variable size. for any that don't upload I find that if I resize them 75% or 50% they always seem to work at the smaller size.

It was the later common rail ones. I think those started in 07 or 08. Not sure. I have a coworker who had a jetta bought back. He LOVED that car.

Yeah, they sort of screwed us in the USA, on a lot of the TDIs. Not sure why. The followers are legion and loyal. I am planning an Audi A4 Quattro BHW swap if i ever get round to it.

I don't have the patience to play around with photos on my phone. I uploaded to the pc and tried also, but it still didn't like it. I'm not that interested in fighting the software i guess. I could go back to offsite hosting i guess, but we know that the last debacle means i don't have photos left for half my thread.

Obviously he didn't loveit that much... if I had a manual, diesel Jetta and I knew the end was neigh, fat chance anyone would ever get that out of my hands. Though dad's 05 is kinda being a PITA these day's.

Incidentally, i remember the day i came into work and found out about the diesel scandal. I had done a market analysis for the last few years on diesels in usa market. We had a diesel release scheduled. It wasn't that long after dieselgate that the program was scrapped. Now it's all EVs. I'll retire with the last of the ICE powertrains.

Nah. Just lots of little issues. Coolant leaks, he put a clutch in it and now thinks it has a bad trans bearing. I don't buy it, but maybe.

I was pretty mad when I found out the "clean diesel" I'd always wanted (but never gotten to) had all been a lie. I thought they were geniuses for figuring out how to do it without the darn DEF system.

Do you have the manual transmission sourced yet? Do you have to buy a donor car or are they available from a salvage yard, etc?
It sounds to be an interesting project, if that was your only project......... the temperature is dropping and I fired up the boiler this morning to run the hydronic heater in the garage. I needed to warm up just my office for a little while....

Same result, different motivations. I was super pissed when i found out they were cheating because i knew what it would do to the direction of the industry. I do not think EV is the only way. It's virtue signaling taken to the nth degree. I do analysis and i can do math. The people in power don't even believe in it. "Do what i say, not what i do"

Yeah, I found one on LKQ national network. Florida, about 350, and 215 for shipping. I couldn't get them to ship it to my house without a huge upcharge for liftgate service. I had to play games with my address and make it sound like a commercial dock so i could get the charge down. No option on the stupid web form for "customer has a forklift and will unload your truck at the road".Do you have the manual transmission sourced yet? The other stuff shouldn't be too hard to locate. Plenty of manual Passats around. Junkyard stuff.
I'm feeling the pinch for projects too. I didn't really want another project, but it was too tempting a car to not jump on. Runs fantastic, if all i have to do is put in a manual, i'm pretty ok with it. I *could* run the old boiler for a while if i had to. Meanwhile i'll keep plugging on stuff. The manual swap in the Passat uses the same process i'm doing right now on the Audi, so tools and process are already there.
I think a lot could be done with a serial hybrid setup, instead of the overly complicated parallel + sometimes all electric builds.
VW's argument (well, lots of 'we can't do emissions' arguments) are "we can't do good emissions if the operator demands xyz conditions," which are something like 75% of operating conditions.
if you put in an ICE that meets your average load conditions, and run it at that load permanently, that argument is gone. you can do the acceleration out of the now much smaller battery vs a pure EV setup. that also lets you build an extremely efficient engine (maybe delayed intake valve closing (low compression ratio, high expansion ratio, lean burn, etc), while not compromising drivability.
another cool application of the tech is the Vonnen shadow drive. +150hp, only 1kWh of battery.

The typical result is about 40-42 on the highway. Seeing as i'm not importing a euro tdi trans, but using the highest geared USA available trans, i am not sure exactly. It's going to be roughly equivalent to the Golf i had as far as highway rpms. ~2750@80.
It will be an available extra vehicle at least. I told the wife it wouldn't be good for her to go to work - 6 miles. It would be good for me, or to go run errands or go to church or long trips or whatever. She can use the gasser for work.

what will sell the EV eventually is the performance, not the milage. the instant torque and flat power curve is unimaginable to an ICE guy. Once the stigma of electric in the performance world starts to really wear off, and the stubborn clinging to familiarity passes, the EV's will be the new Vipers, Corvettes, Camaros, Chargers and Mustangs. At least that what I think will make it viable. I think it is a mistake for the EV companies to focus on the gas savings or green footprint, they should do a lot of flat out acceleration and handling commercials. Guys are shelling out a lot of cash for fast cars.

I don’t care if gas is $10/gal. I’m burning dead dinosaurs until the day I die. Hell, I already buy race gas by the 55 gal drum for my 70 LT-1. Don’t even get me started on the “all in” costs of running EV. They only become the norm if people cave into it, until their A/C doesn’t work in August due to a “ period of high demand”

Over here there is a big push to get everybody in EV's but with the big increases in the cost of electricity they are no longer cost effective because of the high cost buying an EV. Add to that the grid isn't set up for everybody plugging in their EV's, and what do people do that live in the cities and don't have their own drive where they can instal a charger because not enough communal chargers yet.
Also the government will have to find another tax cash cow when all the dead dinosaurs burning vehicles have gone, bet they will keep the electricity prices high via extra tax when the wholesale prices come down in the future.

I drove my first EV this week, Wed. The thing won a Ward's auto award. I loved the acceleration, but actually hated the car. I would never buy one. I'm 110% sure these things are winning awards by virtue signalling press. Acolytes of the green religion.
EV's dont save the planet. They actually cost more in "co2 footprint" which i actually hate that term because co2 is literally plant food. did everyone fail basic science? It's all about control. EV's all have software in them for remote shut down. think the gov won't do a mass shut down whenever they need it? count on it. How prescient was Orwell? Time will tell.

Well, this came in today. 
The trans looks great. Fairly low miles and i can tell it was in the south. These are the lowest numerical overall gears available in USA trans of any VW/Audi. Not tdi gearing, but close.
In other news, the forklift appears to have a broken gear in the steering. The wheels are no longer aligned. And i can't have that down for very long, so it will need to be a quick fix. Never ending fun...

I think the repower kit that ford is selling shows promise and I have always wanted a zero motorcycle but mucho expensive. The typical ev doesn't fit my use case.

Nor mine really. EVs are not very good for towing. And the EV followers are always talking about how you can power your car with solar. Yeah, Solar insolation is not so good around here. It's cloudy a LOT of the time. My array size would have to be HUGE.

Yes Michigan is not ideal for solar. I have been playing with a DC powered well pump in texas because I got some almost free panels but it doesn't pencil out unless you are in the trade

Got the seal replaced on the transmission for the Audi, now it's all ready to come back together. So i'll try and manhandle that tonight. Then i can get started on the front end work. Really should not take this long to work on this job, but waiting on parts is somewhat demotivating.

that's often a real pain in the **** - when you turn wrenches only on the weekends and if you don't have a part to proceed with the job, you fall behind.
Example -- I have a ZF-5 4x4 trans disassembled right now, and not sure I'll have the parts needed for reassembly next weekend. At least I have a spare 2WD trans that I can borrow parts from if needed...

Yep, I'm filming it all. I need to post a few more Dana 60 videos before I start with ZF-5 content. Front diff is done, but need to edit and post part 2 and part 3 of the Dana 60 mini series.
You should think about filming some of your projects. From what I'm seeing, folks are quite interested in just plain tech, so you don't need to have any crazy adventures with project cars, just film various wrenching projects and explain as you go.
