Desperately trying to put all parts of garage in place. Lumber and plywood are an unsolved issue. None of it is trash. Want to minimize floor space but have mobile. Anyone make one about 2’x4’x6’ tall? Thinking with one leaning side. Can make out of steel if needed. All the tall ones I’ve seen are wall mounted.

I made a mobile cart for the smaller cutoffs. The larger sheets of plywood are on a cart that's hinged to the wall using gas pipe as a hinge. I tried to keep the plywood cart free standing, but once loaded, it was just too tipsy. The hinge also keeps the cart from rolling around when you're sliding large, heavy sheets on. I put hardy board on the bottom so the sheets slide easier.

The backside of the small scrap storage has racks for my clamps.

Thanks. My old garage has the swing rack attached to the wall and i loved it. Not sure of the final floor plan but definitely something i want to account for. This will most likely be only temporary. after moving the wood pile twice i figured i need to make a cart.

I came to the conclusion for me that keeping anything more than minimal amounts of lumber or plywood around was false economy. It took up valuable space and even when I thought I did a good job of storage there was always a little warpage. YMMV

Search Google images for A-frame carts. There's some variations that may work such as carts for granite or glass.

I built this guys scrap cart. I liked the design and it was part of the single sheet plywood design contest so it only used up one sheet of ply. It could be modified easily to go larger if that’s what suits you. I only keep 2-3 half sheet cutoffs on the back of it so it works for me as is.

That was my plan. This wood is either too expensive to burn or destined for something specific. As with steel, I find i am always using off cuts and small pieces so i hate to trash it. I'll eventually have lumber racks above wall cabinets but for now i have to do something to manage it.

Proof of concept complete. Base uses 2x2 1/4 inch tube for weight. Put two pivot casters on and immediately wish I had all four. It won’t be bad as I won’t be moving it much. Can easily add another four sheets of plywood and not have tipping. This design is only 3x4 feet so great space saver. Need to add some more tabs to keep boards from moving too much as well as finish welding and grinding. Felt so great to get rid of this leftover steel and organize piles of wood

I mounted 2x4 vertically, 2x side facing, spaced as needed for the stocks lengths and made brackets out 2x4 sandwiched between ply that was protruding so it could be slipped over the wall mounted 2x4 and be secured with screws.

I will see if I can find pics.

that looks pretty good Kaizen. This is on my short list to tackle plywood / offcut storage, and I'll be using your design to start with!

Kaizen: how does your new lumber cart move around? looks like it's holding a few boards. i hear you on the bon fire to burn the small pieces but OMG when we need one isn't that pile of them nice to have around?

I made a hanging storage for long plywood out of unistrut and i'll post pics if you'd like to see, but if you are happy with your cart solution then all good.

one issue I have with the loft type storage is as it's getting full when I need to remove a piece from the bottom there is a lot of labor to get it down cause i need to remove an replace everything on top of it. it also becomes a CATCH ALL which I'm sure I can solve that issue (or hope I can).

thanks for sharing your thought process from start to finish.

It’s rolls easy on reclaimed 4” casters from a tool box. I’ve found with me that I hate horizontal storage like you describe or on racks if it’s not for long term storage. I’ve literally stopped doing a project after seeing the piece I need buried under 300 pounds of wood at ten feet high. Takes a lot of wasted work.
In a month I’m sure I will be making something and wish I had the piece I just burned. [emoji38] but for today I HAVE to get this mess organized and getting rid of these piles that I have to keep moving had to be done.
Sure would love to see your rack.

Kaizen: it's made of unistrut and I just extended a 4 foot portion off the pallet racking I have in the back of my bride's garage where she parks her car. since it's only about a foot of storage i can't go to crazy with how much I put up there, but it's already becoming a catch all like I mentioned. i'll get better pics if you need some, but if you look close up near the top and back of her side of the garage you'll see it. I also put some sono tubes up there to hold small long stuff and this holds 8 foot material flat and some of my longer things like 14 foot molding pieces hang over a bit now.

the other unistrut storage I built over my 5.5 foot wide rotobin will be mostly for light bulbs and supplies, but it makes use of an area that would have gone unused or wasted space. since my portion of our 2 car garage is only 9x15 every inch counts and i've got 4 flat files, 2 rotobins, 3 workbenches and quite a bit of stuff that still doesn't have a spot in it yet. check out my thread where I have more pics if you might be interested, but lately i'm moving out of my storage unit so a bit boring while I get ready to get my DIY projects started for this spring when weather is nicer.

I, too, have the off-cut/short piece storage problem. I built a small rolling cart out of a furniture dolly. It is great, right after I give away or burn the over flow. No matter what I do my tendency is to not throw it away. It builds, it expands, it creeps and it takes over. I snap out and deal with it finally. The metal I keep. It is hard to burn. I picked up three 2x6x6' metal racks a few years ago. I put all three on casters. I find the spacing on the shelves as they currently sit is to great and represents a lot off waste space. I have to be careful there though as if I put in an intermediate shelf it will turn into a dark 2' deep archeological dig in no time. One of the three has become a total catch-all and I am trying to figure out how to deal with it. Perhaps some uni-strut for the intermediate shelf. Net/net, it is a constant battle. I see pictures of all of these neat and orderly shops and I wonder how people do it. I was ADD before it was fashionable so I just don't work that way. The best I can say about my shop is it is chaotic abstract expressionism. It drives me nuts, but I love being out there
