I have been rather busy the past month building a shed...started near the end of august and am basically done now. Just a few odds and ends to finish off still such as skirting around the bottom, a ramp, and eventually something a little nicer for the soffit area (won't do soffit until next year though). It's an 8x10 with 8' tall walls, not from a kit or plans...just designed myself. I haven't built something quite like this before, so go easy on me :)

My old shed:

After removing it:

Dug out the larger new site:

Gravel drainage base for underneath:

Used the car and trailer to pick up everything:

Roughly laid out the floor frame:

Built frame, 2x6 pressure treated on 16 centers:

Sheeted the floor with 3/4" plywood:

Tow rig again, it did surprisingly well for stuff like this:

In the middle of framing, all 2x4 on 16 centers:

Most of the frame and rafters built, packed up for a night:

1/2" plywood sheeting on the walls:

Had to tarp up a couple times because of rain:

Shingled:

That looks wonderfully well build and very sturdy. I think the external finish looks good. Top job! Vinyl cladding is not very widely available in the UK, so it's rare to see it used for external finishing.

Mighty fine construction you have done on your shed, congrats... It is sharp.

Just being curious as I am sure you had your reasons, but the 25 years construction experience in me has to ask though... :)

How come you didn't just make it 12 ft. long, rather than 10 ft. ? Multiples of
4 says to me, less building material waste ?

Thanks Guys :)

Greg - My yard is rather small (suburbia lol) and if I had gone 12 feet long it would have been a little too close to the main stairs to my deck and look awkward. I wanted to do 8x12, it would have definitely made a few things easier. You can see in this picture the grey tarp is the corner of the deck, the shrubs are right in front of it. Imagine two feet further and you see the gap would have only been 4-5 feet between the two.

looks nice
but how come you didnt build the base bigger than the concrete blocks? so they would be hidden
If I had built them on the inside it would have put things in cantilever which isn't as strong as point loads straight down. If I had built up on 4x4 posts in the blocks and 2x6's on the outside it would make it higher off the ground and it's already quite tall. I'm not too worried about it, doesn't look overly bad. It also means I can use a jack more easily if I ever need to re-level the blocks. I could have done poured concrete for foundation but did not want to get into that.

Makes perfect sense to me, we all know that our greatest project schemes do not come with yard stretchers. :)

Good job! What did you do for the rear outside wall? Did you cover that with the siding? If so, how did you do that with that wall being right up against the fence?

Quick question, were your concrete footing blocks easy enough to get a good level with??
I have seen the in the big box stores here and on some of the make over shows an I thought what a good idea.

It's actually about 18 inches off the fence at both the side and back. I made sure there was just enough room for my tall ladder to fit in there. So all sides are covered with siding.

If you are doing a floating foundation they are definitely the way to go. It took a bit of fiddling to get things perfectly level...lifting the blocks and moving the gravel around, compacting it, and using a big rubber mallet to hammer em' level. If I were doing it again I would definitely use them still. Just make sure you level every step of the way...I even leveled the dirt (only removing material as to not disturb soil underneath) after I dug things out, and leveled the gravel prior to even trying to level the blocks. Just use your floor joists with the 4 foot level to help get a full span level.

I've been thinking about building a shed in my yard. I've been on the fence about whether I would go with a prefab, a kit, or a custom job. Was this a kit or did you come up with the design yourself? I don't suppose you kept any record of costs? If so, would you be open to sharing?

This was a design I did myself and not a kit, just buying the materials from the store.

Cost is around $2000-2200. I haven't totalled it up again for a while. I imagine an 8x12 would be similar in cost as there is a bit of waste going 8x10. I also have some leftover materials, had I bought exactly what I needed I might have saved $200-300...but the extra 2x4's, screws, nails, and such will get put to use on other projects so it wasn't really a concern and buying the bigger quantities can afford some discounts (especially on fastners).

2x4x8' are currently $2.65 CDN here for reference on lumber cost.

Did you build this from your own expertise knowledge or did you follow plans?
I have got to say it is most impressive. Would you build another now you have done this or is this your one and only?

Nice shed. I need one bad. Trying to get all my yard equipment out of the garage for good. My backyard is pretty small so I don't want a huge one. All the prefab ones just seem flimsy and poorly made so I'm in a pickle. I'd love to build something like that but I've never built anything with a roof or headers or angle cuts. Might be a big challenge for me.
