I have a shop with 9 ft garage doors. Openers come set up for 7 ft doors. I can buy a kit for an 8 ft door.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a kit that will enable me to use a standard opener on my 9 ft doors?

Thanks.

Chamberlain's web site lists 8 and 10 foot kits for their standard 1/2 hp opener. I would call or e-mail them. My guess is that the 10 foot kit would work fine on a 9 ft door.

Contact a garage door company, even if you buy the opener to install yourself. Get one with a one-piece rail. Linear, and Liftmaster both make one that long. I don't know if you can get an extension kit for that tall of a door.

Liftmaster sells 7,8, and 10 foot rails for their residential stuff. A 10ft Liftmaster opener fully assembled will be about 13 1/2 ft long, and the one-piece rail itself will be about 12 1/2 ft.

Get a Liftmaster 8500 shaft drive. You'll NEVER look back. Not just the best garage door opener I've had ... The Greatest Garage Door Opener!

Combine a Liftmaster 8500 with Green Garage Door Hinges and you'll have the best garage door in the neighbor!

Double check me on this.
But I think that the "extension kit" I did not buy extend a stock big box opener from 7 to 10 feet.
It was more track, chain/screw/belt, whatever, added t the end of the standard product.

I was kind of wanting to avoid the Liftmaster 8500 just because of the price. But, that might be what I need.

I used the 10' extension kit for the 9' door in my garage. Both the opener and kit are craftsman, so that should be similar to the main chamberlain offerings. It was basically a longer chain and a couple different pieces of rail, then once its setup you have to adjust the travel to set it for 9'.

The multi-piece bar at that length does sag, and the chain does rub. The overall feel of it is that its not for heavy duty work. That said, its been in for a year of non-daily use and held up fine. I looked up the order, and the extension kit was $53, the opener itself $140. With the random free shipping that sears was doing at that particular moment in time, I didn't think I could lose at $200 all told.

If you don't want to do the 8500, I definitely recommend just buying any Liftmaster opener with a 10' rail (actual rail length would be longer - it's just made for a 10' high door. You would need to contact a local garage door guy and buy it from him, but it's definitely more durable than doing an extension kit. You can also buy a light duty commercial Liftmaster opener for not a whole hell of a lot of money.

A 10 ft extension would work fine on a 9 ft door. At least in my case (Craftsman) it would have done so.

When you add up all the costs and issues you need to deal with to install the track opener that you need for your application, you might find yourself not too far away from and 8500. If you install an 8500, you will likely never look back.
