I've had this Sears 9" grinder over 30 years and use it all the time. Recently it started throwing sparks from brush/armature area so I took it apart, cleaned armature like new, brushes are in good shape best I can tell (3/4" long, springs ok). It's made in USA and served me well.
Back together no joy, doesn't run full speed and arcing at brushes.
Any repair ideas or equal replacement much appreciated. Thanks.View attachment 1018198View attachment 101820020200602_130311.jpg

I have the same one since 1976. I did add a Dewalt guard to it and use a Forney 9in wheel. I don't use the "power lock on" button and may remove it at some point. They are beasts. It falls into the category of tools I do not lend out.
The armature could be electrically failing. You could check the resistance across the loops.
Also look up "commutator brush bedding."

Thanks! Few pictures. It did ohm out funny pad to pad. All 0.2 ohms except two I marked green 0.6 ohms...even checking winding to winding.View attachment 101829520200602_161512.jpg

I have a Makita 9". It has served me quite well, including a jammed wheel from a violent catch with a cutoff wheel and an afternoon's worth of subsequent attacks with a 1/2 inch impact wrench, sometimes using the spindle lock to hold against the impacting.

It's still going strong.

Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, Metabo all make them. Many have good-better-best models. If you need the power, look at 15 amp models. If you need portability, Makita makes a 36V model that uses a brushless motor.

You likely have an open or short in the armature, if you can find a cheap replacement, it might be worth throwing it in. A rewind will cost far more than a new, very nice 9" grinder in most areas, just not too many people willing or capable of doing quality rewind work cheap. I picked up a Makita that looked like it had never been used for $50 and later a Milwaukee that was whooped for $25 but ran like new after installing new brushes.

I'll add one more thought. If a new one is purchased, look at the types of guards that are easily sourced for the different tooling you can attach.

I got a B&D at the swapmeet for $5. Works great. Most people like the 4" - 5" ones so the old 9" can be found cheap (after they've been sitting neglected for a few years).

The Metabo got here today. I used it already, works great. Nice something made in USA or Germany not China.
Seems well made.20200605_171155.jpg
