I’ve seen this asked here about a dozen times, but either the question was never answered, or the info was way outdated.

I picked up a Snap-On KR660B a while back that was abandoned in the yard here at work. Pretty complete minus the vertical trim pieces, about 25% of the drawer trim pieces, locks, casters and Snap-On emblem.

I know the locks, casters and emblems are still available from SO, but I’m having a hard time finding the vertical and drawer trim. Anyone have a lead as to where these can be sourced? Aftermarket or otherwise? I checked E-bay but came up skunk.

A few pics-

Pretty much as I found it...

Bead blasted the drawers. Getting ready for some minor body work...

It might take alot of searching but have you tried McMaster-Carr @ www.mcmaster.com They have all kinds of metal products looks like you will have to duplicate the trim do you have someone with a similar model to look at?

I thought about going to a metal supply house to see if I could order some 1x1 stainless channel. Just thought I'd try here first.

Hmm...

Called one of my steel suppliers and he said he can get me a 16 ga 1x1 channel in aluminum.

May have to pull the trigger on that. I'm not having any luck finding OE trim.

I'll be curious to see how this thing turns out. It will be a lot of work, but you can't beat the purchase price! :)

Make sure you get either the original castors, or ones that can handle the kind of weight that box is, and will hold.

I think if you study the parts breakdown on Snap-Ons website you'll find the drawer trim from other models will fit yours. I had to order drawer trim from another box to get one for mine, a KRL791 wasn't shown as available, though another models was. It was the same trim. Snap-Ons site leaves something to be desired. Good Luck.

That's a good idea. I'll have to look into that.

I did pick up some 1x1 aluminum channel today. They didn't have stainless in that size, but I figure polished aluminum will do until I can find the OE stuff.

That's a good idea. I'll have to look into that.

Look into it? All you have to do is click on the link I gave you and then verify with a technical representative at Snap-on. The KRL661 was the direct successor to the KR660B. The overall dimensions are the same. All they did is put a wide drawer across the top. Don't wait too long because Snap-on discontinues stuff out of their parts catalog everyday.

Latest development.

I have 4 drawers that are busted up pretty good – the spot welds on the drawer fronts have separated. Looks like someone had riveted them back on at one point, but I figured since I had such good luck with getting SO to replace the drawer glides, I’d see if they would entertain replacement of the damaged drawers. Called SO’s CS number to see what they would do. I was told they discontinued the drawers, but they would send someone out to take a look at them.

Anyone ever deal with this before? I have a feeling that because of the overall condition of the box and the fact that I’m not the original owner that they aren’t going to do a whole lot. Not that I blame them. Just curious if anyone has seen a situation like this before and knows how it panned out. As it stands, I’m supposed to be contacted by a SO Rep within 5 business days.

Well, two months and 5 phone calls later I haven’t heard from Snap-On regarding the drawers. I keep calling, the SR keeps telling me he’ll/she’ll forward it on to management. I keep waiting.

I’ve managed to get all the drawer glides replaced and I have four new S.O. casters on the way. Once I get this drawer situation figured out, I’ll squirt some paint this thing and put it all back together. At first I was thinking along the lines of a two-tone, with the box being dark metallic red and the drawers a dark metallic grey, but now I’m kinda liking S.O.’s cranberry…

I've been in a similar situation with Mac - I had a small drawer that was giving me fits, called a couple of dozen times over the span of 3 months with a similar "forwarding to management" type response. Got mad, fixed it on my own (TIG'd it back together, threw a coat of rattlecan paint on it) and about 4 months after I first started calling, a box arrived containing a new drawer and slides.

Were the rivets put in where the spot welds were at originally? Just go to a small body shop that has a spot welder and see how much they would charge. Do the prep work by cleaning the paint off the broken spot welds so you get a good weld---takes 10 seconds or less per weld. Companies like Eastwood also sell small spot welders and you can see them for sale on CL all the time.

I can straighten out the drawers and weld them up, but I kinda want to wait and see what S.O. will do about it before I go to any trouble. I'd rather have N.O.S. drawers from S.O. rather than repaired damaged ones if I can get away with it.

I don't want to throw a huge fit over it, but I would like some kind of response...even if it is just to tell me there's nothing they can do.

Finally heard from Snap-On. Didn’t really pan out. The guy was a total ****, actually. He finally called me after about six months of me repeatedly hounding SO Customer Service and lied to me about how he’d been trying to get ahold of me for months. When I called him out on it, he dodged the question. Then he gave me some song and dance about how he would come out on a certain date to take a look at the box. He never showed. Gave him a couple of extra days to show. Nothing. Called SO back and there was a notation on the account that unless I had a receipt for a box purchased back in 1990, that he wouldn’t be doing anything for me.

It’s fine. I get it. I’m not the original owner, so I really have no room to *****.

I just wish the guy would have been up front with me from the get-go. Or at least had the balls to tell me to piss off, himself. I never told him I *wasn’t* the original owner. As far as he knows, my company (the actual, real-life, OG owner) still owns the box. I don’t know how you’d expect the original owner to hang on to a receipt for 22 years. My Dad has SO tools older than me back that he bought off the truck when he was diesel wrenching. I guarantee he doesn’t have receipts anymore. Guess he’s assed out on his warranty, too.

Oh, well. At least I got an answer. I’ll have the drawers fixed, paint the box, and finally put this thing back in service.

I'm doing this with an old 1980 9-drawer KR555. Snap on sells many, many replacement parts for their boxes. Even as old as mine.

The side trim is the part im having trouble with. Snap on wants $39 each for replacements, and aftermarket is not turning up any good results. The trim is 1 1/16" x 1 1/16" with 1 1/16" walls (1"x1" ID). This size is impossible to find. Ive found 1"x1" and 1 1/8" x 1 1/8" but no 1 1/16" anywhere.

Let me know if you have any luck finding aftermarket replacements, or if the 1x1 works out for you.

Yeah, I know.

I may go to a local fab shop and see if they can bend me up some stainless.

That would be nice. Let us know how it turns out and the cost of it. I thought about doing the same except with aluminum, but don't know where I could go to get it done.
I believe I'm going to attempt to sand and re-polish the original trim. It's going to be a PITA since it is anodized aluminum.
