My remodel project is over a year in the process so far and have second-guessed I should have done a total demo and started new. Removed shed roof and replaced with gable truss roof. Repaired concrete block walls (outside resemble stone blocks) and removed 3 block courses on high side of shed roof. Recycled 2 x 8 rafters to build up low wall and provide roof plate around entire perimeter. Installed manufactured trusses, plywood, felt and shingles. Started facia & soffit with aluminum and vinyl gable-ends to match house but progress is slow due to full-time job and yard maintenance. Still need to pour new floor (raising finished level by 6 inches to keep surface water out) and install new doors. Once I get this project finshed, I should have a newer 90+ yr-old garage.
I should add that I am nearly 63, a tinkerer & diyer, approaching retirement and live in WV right on the Maryland border. Started diying about 11 years ago after purchasing a 1917 house that was last updated in the 1950s. Most of the house is livable now so I attacked the garage last year so I would have "somewhere to go" after my wife and I are both retired. During the remodel of the house I have acquired some power tools so I have some plans about having a shop to keep the tools in place and not needing to move everything out of the way every time I have a shop project. Would also like a place to tweak my 1983 Merc Lynx SW. As I said above, I have thought in hindsight that I should have torn the garage down and started over but upon replacing the roof I had too much time, work and money invested.
I am looking forward to gleaning ideas from this forum for my project and have already enjoyed reading the discussion. Thanks!
