So this week I had the opportunity to go to a police impound auto auction; my first auction. I didn't know what to expect. I went to see if I could get a good deal on a nice beater work truck.

I registered, was handed a list of the vehicles up for auction, and a number (#23). Many of the vehicles were wrecks, junkers, and a few were not so bad. Then....

There it was, I spotted this beauty of a machine, a 1998 Chevrolet Cheyenne C1500 Regular Cab Short Bed with a low, low-low, low-low-low, 206,000 miles on her.
truck01.jpg

Black, clearly repainted, custom wheels, grill, and turn signals. It also included a truck bed topper with....wait for it.....a spoiler.

They worked their way from vehicle to vehicle turning them on, popping the hood, etc. so all bidders could review the state of the vehicles. With a battery tender attached, the chevy fired right up.

That was the one. That was the truck I was going to go to battle for. All other bidders were up for a challenge. And should bid at their own peril.

The auctioneer worked from car to car, truck to truck. The chevy was listed toward the end. The closer he got the more nervous, excited, and eager I became. It was my first auction after all. Finally, finally he got to her.

He announced the make, model, mileage, etc. about the truck. Just when he started to announce the initial bidding, I found my hand with number firmly in it firing to the sky. A little awkwardly high to be honest. When I became concious of my actions I had apparently just bid $250.....He went to $300 and........

OMG! No! No way! Not, even possible! (I sounded like a teenage valley girl in my head for a moment)

All the sudden I realized, nobody else was bidding on the truck. The auctioneer went going once, going twice......SOLD!!!!!!

I had just won a perfectly functional very well maintained truck for $250. The auction ended so I went to the city clerk, paid my $250, returned with the paper work and drove off with MY TRUCK!

Tomorrow, I'm headed down to one of my buddies fathers shop to throw it up on the lift and service it, ditch the topper and spoiler, etc.

I'm planning to find some new wheels with truck sized tires, try to find a stock grill, and turn signals.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention one of the best parts! When I got the truck back to my place and I lifted up the topper, what was in the bed of the truck?

TOOLS!!!!!!! Lots and lots of Tools!!! Mostly drywall and tiling tools, that are very worn, but still.......

It's a 4-speed automatic, 2x4, with the 5.0L V8 MPI engine.

Thanks for the recommend on the website for these trucks, most definitely will log onto it. I bet you're right I bet I can get my $250 back from the parts I want to ditch.

i just noticed your location... not to be too stereotypical, but I'd bet some mexican will give you your money back for that bed cover with the spoiler... and you can probably trade even for some stock wheels. As far as the front end... it doesnt look bad. I'd probably leave it.

it being a auction truck chances are it was owned by someone shady, what i would do and have done is change the door and ignition locks just so deporteys cuz dont see it and take it to get his revenge on the polica for taking the truck and sending his people to mehico. think about who could have the other set of keys!

X2, and give it a good toss. The cops are notorious for getting lazy when they search vehicles like this so you never know what kind of "goodies" you might find hidden in there.

You got an awesome deal!!! I would just replace the clear marker lights in the corners of the grill with the factory yellow ones and call it good. Then you could sell the clear ones along with the topper and the spoiler. Use some of that headlight restorer buffing compound on the turn signal in the front of the grill.

Be sure to check for intake manifold gasket leaks. Very common on these. It will typically leak coolant at the front corners and sometimes at the rear next to firewall.
Hopefully, it has not been leaking coolant into the engine or you just bought a boat anchor in short time.

Wow, what a downer. My 4.3 leaked at the intake gaskets for while, no biggie. Got it fixed in a few hours.

Great score, and YOU ****!

Those rims look like someone chromed (or chrome painted) some 3rd gen Camaro wheels.

Good point, it has some ignition turn issues anyway. I have to fiddle with it a bit to get it to turn. I figured I could with that, but with this point.......sold.

Wow. Great job. I think this deserves a hardy YOU **** award.

Bender78, Congratulations as the first YOU **** poster, you have won a :thumbup:

Today I took it down to a buddies shop threw it up on the lift and we started wrenching on it. Here's what we did today:

1. Oil & Filter Change
2. Suspension - New shocks all around.
3. Front Brakes - New front rotors and pads
4. Rear Brakes - The rear drum brakes looked perfect. Apparently whoever did the job didn't properly adjust the depth of the pads so we thoroughly cleaned them and adjusted them to the proper depth.
5. Fluid Check - Fresh coolant quickly showed a leak in the water pump, so that will need to be replaced. Everything else looked perfect, for the most part.
6. Cleaning - Pressure washed the bed.

I've now spent more on parts on this truck than what I paid for the truck (Not that hard to do though). Grand total for the servicing......$315

All in all it looks, is now running and riding, pretty solidly. It has some leaks that need to be dealt with, but those will have to wait for another day. Speaking of another day, in the next few weeks I plan to:

1. Change the water pump.
2. Wheel alignment
3. New Wheels and Tires
4. You all sold me on keeping the grill, but I am going to swap out the clear marker lights and buff up the headlights and turn signals.
5. Change the door and ignition locks. The ignition is being finicky anyway, so...

Thanks for the tip jay50. That bit looks okay. Where it is leaking coolant is the water pump. So I'll have to fix it sooner than later.

Damn...you really ****!!!

Go here http://www.s10forum.com/forum/? and you can sell those rims for more than you paid for the truck. The S10 guys really want those rims.

As far as the front end, I'd leave it and buy a new set of clear corner turn signals lenses. That is the only thing that looks bad is that they are dull. I'd pull the spoiler but leave the cover, but that's just me. If you do sell it, you'll recover most of what you spent for the whole truck. You can get a couple of hundred out of it as they go for around a grand brand new.

Thanks for sharing your great auction score...with all the heart pounding detail..LOL...fun read.

That 1998 1/2ton will drive nice and be cheap to fix, when needed.
- these are great trucks, to own / with a good 5.0 liter V8

If they are really Z-28 wheels, the bolt pattern is different. The full size Chevy trucks use 5 on 5, the Camaro is 5 on 4.75, which is same as S-10. Could be the wheels are aftermarket copies of Z-28 wheels. I would change them out anyway, as well as the door locks and ignition, and lose the bed cover with spoiler.

Nice score for only $250, not many times you can drive away a $250 truck that looks as good as that one does.

Nice looking truck, If the wheels are 15x8 I'd keep 'em and throw some 275/60s on them. Hard to tell by the pics, is it lowered? I have a '94 Sierra like yours except its maroon/red. I'd like to lower it 2/4 and put some Impala SS wheels on it.

Does the water pump have a weep hole where it leaks on these trucks? The reason I ask is that I've got a 1996 Z71 with the 5.7 motor. When I bought it a few years ago, I had someone else replace the intake gasket since it was leaking.

Now, I'm losing about a pint of coolant every 200 miles. No external leaks or drips and it doesn't appear to be getting into the oil.

Good score!
Changing out the ignition ain't all bad but those damn door locks are a whole different animal to work on. I went with NAPA parts when I did my 93 GMC after getting it from a tow yard (no keys at all), best of luck, oh & don't forget a bag of those plastic door clips for the door panels.
