So this week I had the opportunity to go to a police impound auto auction; my first auction. I didn't know what to expect. I went to see if I could get a good deal on a nice beater work truck.
I registered, was handed a list of the vehicles up for auction, and a number (#23). Many of the vehicles were wrecks, junkers, and a few were not so bad. Then....
There it was, I spotted this beauty of a machine, a 1998 Chevrolet Cheyenne C1500 Regular Cab Short Bed with a low, low-low, low-low-low, 206,000 miles on her.
Black, clearly repainted, custom wheels, grill, and turn signals. It also included a truck bed topper with....wait for it.....a spoiler.
They worked their way from vehicle to vehicle turning them on, popping the hood, etc. so all bidders could review the state of the vehicles. With a battery tender attached, the chevy fired right up.
That was the one. That was the truck I was going to go to battle for. All other bidders were up for a challenge. And should bid at their own peril.
The auctioneer worked from car to car, truck to truck. The chevy was listed toward the end. The closer he got the more nervous, excited, and eager I became. It was my first auction after all. Finally, finally he got to her.
He announced the make, model, mileage, etc. about the truck. Just when he started to announce the initial bidding, I found my hand with number firmly in it firing to the sky. A little awkwardly high to be honest. When I became concious of my actions I had apparently just bid $250.....He went to $300 and........
OMG! No! No way! Not, even possible! (I sounded like a teenage valley girl in my head for a moment)
All the sudden I realized, nobody else was bidding on the truck. The auctioneer went going once, going twice......SOLD!!!!!!
I had just won a perfectly functional very well maintained truck for $250. The auction ended so I went to the city clerk, paid my $250, returned with the paper work and drove off with MY TRUCK!
Tomorrow, I'm headed down to one of my buddies fathers shop to throw it up on the lift and service it, ditch the topper and spoiler, etc.
I'm planning to find some new wheels with truck sized tires, try to find a stock grill, and turn signals.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention one of the best parts! When I got the truck back to my place and I lifted up the topper, what was in the bed of the truck?
TOOLS!!!!!!! Lots and lots of Tools!!! Mostly drywall and tiling tools, that are very worn, but still.......
