Looking over and cleaning up my tools the other day and noticed that all of my 9mm wrenches/sockets have had zero use. I've worked on alot of domestic and asian stuff and never have found a use. Is this a european thing or am I the only one wondering why they ever bother to make this size at all?

I've seen some hardware out of Australia that used 9mm nuts on a m6 x1.0 bolt. Normally these are a 10mm head size. That's about the only time i've reached for one.

I have a small box filled with 9mm wrenches. I didn't want to waste room in my wrench racks.

Dirt bikes and quads have plenty of them. It's the 15mm ones that are completely worthless.

No GM cars/trucks in your driveway? 10mm-15mm are the most common fasteners under the hoods of my Sierra and Astro as well as my kid's Pontiac.

I have t bolt clamps on my intercooler piping that use 9mm nuts. I only remember it because i grabbed an 8mm and it was to small so i went right to the 10mm and it was to big and i thought wtf....9mm

I've encountered 9mm before, although I can't think off the top of my head where. The size I've NEVER used on ANYTHING I've worked on is 16mm.

Later model Fords use 16mm. My Expedition has several of them, including the oil pan drain plug bolt.

I use a 5/8 on a 16mm most of the time, same size.I also use 5/16 on 8mm headed bolts also, same size too.I pound on 9mm 6 point sockets on badly rounded off 10mm headed bolts.GM,Ford and Chrysler use 18mm also.

I guess you've never worked on much European stuff. 16mm is one of my most-used sizes.

I used it maybe once on the Volvo (for an e-torx screw I think), and about as often on the BMW. But it was one of those things that was annoying to have to seek out when I did need it.

Here's what's the point of a 20mm socket?

I've used my 20mm half in deep impact for 1 purpose, f'ed up lug nuts, either a 19mm chrome capped lug where the 19 would get stuck on every lug torquing them, or rusted to the point where the socket bite's the lug and gets stuck, or once or twice beating it onto a round head wheel lock key.

An use of a 20mm wrench is on GM fuel filters,a 13/16" wrench will fit sloppy.I have a flip socket,19.5 mm x 18.5mm just for screwed up chrome cap lugnuts I bought from my Matco dealer and it does work.

Yeah, that's about the only time I use a 20mm also. Although a 13/16" should give you enough hold to break it loose, if the last person hasn't tightened it way too tight.

I believe 9mm was the size head of the screws that held in my AC Blend Door Acuator Motor in my 04 Silverado. That job sucked!!!

i think 9 an 11 is european only, lol. my friend owned a pretty prominent tuner shop in the area. i would laugh at how he would either toss away the 9's and 11's or use them to make other tools because in his mind he would never use them. he always sub'd out the german work to me. what sucked though is i would have to drag tools to his shop if i did work there b/c he tossed all the sizes i would need. being a jap shop, they never touched 9/11/13/16/18.

one thing i wonder if there is a use for is a 9mm allen. i use 4/5/6/7/8/10 regularly and even bigger sizes for drain plugs or axles. Yet i never bought a 9 because never ran into a use.
