A bad experience at Sears

Bought some tools at Sears last week to use up my points. Even though the order was more than $49, it wouldn't offer shipping on the items so I had to pick them up at the closest store in White Plains, NY. I went to the store on Sunday to pick up since the traffic around store wouldn't be bad on Sunday.

1. Got to the store at 11 am when the store was supposed to open. Doors were still locked at 11:15am.

2. Walked over to the Auto Center which was open. 3 employees were talking to each other at the service desk because there were no customers there. I asked them to call the store and try to get someone to open the doors. They refused and told me to go away and wait at the store for it to eventually open.

3. Saw a sign thru the locked store doors with the manager's name and phone number. We called him and told him the doors were still locked and he said he would have someone check it out. About 10 minutes later, an employee slowly strolled up to the doors, confirmed they were locked and said he didn't have a key and left. About another 10 minutes later, an employee showed up and opened up.

4. The computer was broken for merchandise pickup, so I couldn't get my pickup and another return processed automatically. The employee checked another system and was able to locate only 2 of the 3 items that I had gotten text messages were on hand. I was told to come back another time when the computer was working to get the third item. Was also told that he couldn't process the return at all, so he walked me up to the tool department to do the return.

5. He left me at the register in the tool department because no employee was there and said I would have to wait for an employee to show up. Another customer came by and said he was told that this was the only register in the store that was manned and he was surprised no one was there, too. Maybe 15 minutes later, and employee showed up. He struggled to process my first return and told me that he would not process the second return because that item was not carried in his department. He told me I should ship it back to Sears (somewhere--he did not know where) even though shipping would cost more than the item was worth.

6. Overall, I wasted over an hour, only got part of my order and could only complete part of my return.

7. When I got home, I got an email from Sears asking me to rate my satisfaction with the transaction. I clicked on the link in the email and tried to rate it a zero. I got an error message saying I couldn't rate it because the link I clicked on was for an invalid order. Even their survey didn't work.

Overall, a really lousy experience. How can such a major retail icon have deteriorated to a point where they can't possibly do anything right?

My job is ending
I'm working on a family type holiday.
I **** at my job, that's why I'm here easter morning.
The store has historically sold less than thirty bucks of stuff in the first hour of opening on a Sunday.
The clerks weren't raised well by the gen x group.
You all let the grandkids get away with this **** so we can maintain a relationship with aforementioned gen x turd we raised.

And that'd be if they were younguns.
Now add the shame, after reading the GJ retirement thread, of working past 59 years old at such a job.
Add in that yours is a return and a store pickup, the most vile of clerk encounters....

Lots of reasons. None I'll defend, but hey, you asked.....
But,
You knew the job was dangerous when you took it.
You've read the reviews, the opinions, the writing on the wall, yet you persist. Just like buying truck stop hotdogs(love those, but I'm wild that way. I once poured Pepsi in to a Coca-Cola glass) and day old half price sushi, you have to accept some of the responsibility.

ducksface called it. That is no doubt the explanation. Way back in the oft mentioned good ol' days, Sears was a good place to shop for lots of things. Those days are long gone.

Customer service used to be A LOT different...Here is my best story.

I remember buying a set of shocks for $5.99 each back in the late 60's. They carried a lifetime warrantee. After the first set wore out, I took them in to get a new set for free. When those wore out, I took them in again for another set, free. When those wore out, I took them in again and it turned out that they no longer carried that application. So they refunded my original purchase price. Cash.

Yep. The Sears & one of the Kmarts closed here. Sure do not miss them as Sears especially was a paper shell of its former self.

Same thing with Radio Shack. I remember RS selling all sorts of electronic items, but that was back in the day when one could repair a TV or a radio. Ancient history.:soapbox:

OP - Wow, I don't have words. Thanks for posting your experience, the facts speak for themselves.
Ducksface - Wow, the truth is harsh, but it needed to be told. Thanks for your post, you tell the truth and you make me think.
And you made me LOL, "day old half price sushi..." Incoming!

Is that Sears in Galleria of White Plains? If so, I know that mall and Sears.
Personally, I wouldn't shop anything in that mall.
Too many weird teenagers, store clerks are rude, for Sears, all the tools are locked up. Seriously, I wouldn't want to go there.

We still have a radio shack.
5 trips, five failures to have what I need.
On off on reverse switch like for a winch? No.
Meter leads? No.
Battery adapters aa to c? No
Battery adapters at all? No
Non crimp coax ends? Out-of-stock.

Lots of stuff in there, just none for me.

Speak for yourself, you can still repair a TV or radio. I do it most of the day.
The problem is no one wants to pay 1/4 of the price to repair anything.

Yes its a matter of ROI and the lack of technological intelligence by most of the population. McDonald's mind set. Cheap, fast & disposable.

Yes, nieuport17, it is the one in the Galleria. It is also the closest Sears to chairman Eddie Lampert's home but I doubt he shops there when they wont ship to his home.

**** you "save your way"

$7 off $25 in tools plus $0.96 in "earned" points. Been tapering off buying stuff form Sears but thought what the hell I'll buy something I need just over $25. Go to check out and "applied" the points to the order like the "how-to" says and the points show there. Click to confirm the order annnnnnd nope, didn't apply them and my CC is charged the whole price. Call "customer service" and instead of applying the points to my order they give me the equivalent in credit back on my account  I don't want your stupid *** points that I cannot apply to an order I want my damn money off.

Did you use a Sears CC? That gives 5% off which is now applied as a coupon and removes surprise points that cannot be combined with coupons.

They're not anywhere near the quality of parts drawers from those other brands, but they're great for lighter storage like they held in the stores.

No, I purposely changed to a different card because I got screwed by that about a month ago buying some batteries for my NexGen drill that were discounted.

The "customer service" person said they see the offer and the points but couldn't explain why they didn't apply so he just "gave" me the dollar value in additional points

Checked with the local RS that's closing out and they wanted $150 per unit or $1000 for all eight. I'll wait until their last day, maybe the next to last & offer $25 per.

I just bought almost 200 drawers of lista cabinets from a dealership that is upgrading, but I will check them out anyways. I figure you can never have too many drawers, right?

The OP's experience reminds me of my multiple dealings with Ford warranty service after buying my Mustang.

So to follow up on my own post. I ended up finding a better deal on the item I was looking at (router bit set, found a bigger set for not much more money) so I ordered it up, used the points form the other purchase then cancelled the first order. I figured they would take away the points I "earned" from the initial purchase but they didn't. So I got more bits for less than the original set I ordered and got my original purchase price back on the card.

So it worked out in my favor this time but still annoying as hell to get points back instead of the amount off I should have in the first place.

I see occasional fantastic deals at Sears when they're closing things out, but I won't spend another penny there, online or in person. Fool me once....

Yes it has. Its also a perfect example of just why a hedge fund "manager" should never and I mean NEVER attempt to run a company. The skill set to be a very successful player at the biggest gambling joint in the world (Wall Street just in case) has little to no correlation with managing a company.

He was very successful on WS, but that ready does not hold much water for me. Just what services or products did he provide or improve? Nothing, just churned money and was in a lower tax bracket.

The dufus who took over Kmart & Sears should serve as an excellent example of how to destroy a company in every B school in the country if not the world.

The only reason I ever step foot into sears anymore is because you can get hand tools for amazing prices if you play the shopyourway rewards BS.

In FL in the early 1970's I went to the Ft. Lauderdale Sears Auto Center for a set of shocks on the front of my LWB Chevy cargo van. They said they were done when I called, and when I went to pick it up before closing, the van looked like a stinkbug, ***-high, and the shocks wouldn't compress when you jumped up & down on it at the bumper. They had installed the front shocks I ordered on the rear! It was close to quitting time, so I had to leave the vehicle there overnight. That was an inconvenience, as it was my only transportation. The next day, I picked-up the truck, and made them show me the box. All OK.

A week later I was driving on US 1 in Miami and heard an irregular, 'tink-tink-tink.' I pulled-over and took a look, and found they used a too-long bolt to secure one of the shocks, and made up the difference with a 2" stack of flat washers. The nut had vibrated-loose, and the 'tink-tink' sound I heard were the flat washers falling-off the too-long bolt. The last time I used Sears Auto Center for anything but a battery swap.

If they had at-least run a couple of beads of stick-weld along the stack, maybe the crummy install would have lasted, or if they had told me about needing to order-in a bolt and to come-back and have it fixed correctly, I would probably out of necessity accepted that. They did fix it of course, when I returned. In the meantime I got a nut and spacer to get safely there.

MIL used to take her new GMC suv to Sears for PM's. I warned her. Anyway they broke her radiator while performing a coolant flush that wasn't even close to being required yet -- months or miles.

But then you have to use Craftsman tools.. Good stocking stuffers though for relatives.

I don't like Sears. I went in there with my husband, picked out some tools, went to the counter, gave the cashier my credit card with my name on it, and the male cashier left the counter and hailed my husband to sign the credit card.
I had some fun yelling at the cashier, tee-hee.
My husband said I should have let it go, and what was the big deal anyway?
We divorced later.

Smart move and good riddance!

I haven't been in a Sears for at least a decade except to walk from the parking area through the store into the mall. Even that trip was several years ago.

Story of my life! I am 100% DONE with Sears, I bought a compressor there, and bought a service plan and for the life of me I can't get anyone to help me with it, as it needs service, their stores have went to the $hiter and I fully understand why they are going to close their doors!

I called and file a complaint as well as left a voicemail with the manager, did I get a call back? Of course not!

I have to say, at first I was sad to see sears go down the tube, but, they deserve it, they did it to themselves. For years they have crippled craftsman and turned it into a gimmicky **** brand. The employees are all worthless. Mostly. The ones I've dealt with anyway. No one cares to make the store decent, or the product halfway useable or desirable to the core craftsman user.

If you don't try, you die. They deserve to go under, with no one to blame but themselves...

Hell, they wouldn't have even needed to innovate to stay competitive. They could just copy what Milwaukee or kobalt/husky is doing.... they could copy targets business model, but, instead they seemingly just quit trying at all. They thought they could pull the wool over the consumers eyes and shove a sub par product down our throats dressed in the packaging and hiding behind the name of a great historical brand like craftsman... but, people aren't that dumb. With the internet, we read reviews, it doesn't take a failed purchase or 2 to realize a product ***** anymore, we can do a google search and realize it. So, their plan of selling sub par goods and hoping no one would return them, clearly failed.

Oh well. It ***** we lost the made in USA craftsman choice as for many years it was a great, well priced, value option. I hope someone will fill their shoes, I hope we get a made in USA tool brand that can compete price wise and quality wise with the good Taiwan stuff like husky/kobalt or gearwrench etc

Anyway, I digress.

Here's my bad experience. I ordered a belt sander online. It arrived today in a box too small for the product. The sander's box was all torn up and held together with scotch tape. Once I got the sander out of the box, it was obvious that it was used. Now, someone intentionally packed up a used sander that they could tell was used, and sent it out to a customer. That will be the last mechanical tool I order from Sears. Screwdrivers and whatnot, fine, but that kind of disregard for the customer is just totally stupid. I told the online rep that they just lost a customer. It’s one thing if something is damaged in shipping, but there was no way to not know that this product was not used. In the end, I have to bring it to a store and wait for a refund. What a total waste of my time.

That is typical of this dying business. They process online orders for stuff they do not have and hours, days or weeks later tell you it is not available. Then they send you a customer satisfaction survey. Everybody knows it will not be long so the employees are just going through the motions. Some of their biggest vendors no longer will deal with them. Whirlpool made many Kenmore appliance for them, for many years, but they just cut ties. I suggest you go into the store and use your points for whatever you can find on the half empty shelves. People buy more stuff online today so most brick and mortar stores, especially in malls, are hurting. That is only part of Sears' problem. Years of bad management brought them to this sorry state. They have not had a profitable quarter in ten years. People have fond memories of going there as a child and Stanley Black and Decker thought thought that the Craftsman name still had value. Hundred year old A&P and Radio Shack folded and Sears is probably next. They have been going down hill for so long that I wrote them off long ago, except for a few odds and ends.
