Hello guys!

I have a 24x30 garage. Fully insulated, doors, windows, walls, everything.

I currently have a kenmore 70121 12,000 btu running off 110.

My problem is....I have 3x3 windows and the height to fit an ac in is about 15" and I want a bigger btu! I don't think I could do a in wall unit myself. I'm just looking for a bigger btu window unit that will fit. I also have 220 plug and would like to use that instead of 110.

Anyone have the same issue and what did you come up with?!

Can't afford or want split units/ptac or anything else. I read bad reviews on portable units. I'm looking to cool fast.

Portable units I have read are not up to par with the manufacturing specs! And an extra ac would look awful in the window since it can be seen and I have the left side of the garage on a circuit and the right on a circuit and have a dedicated circuit for my back window where I want the ac at. I think I'm screwed!

If your window is a builder grade aluminum single hung., look at the top of your window sash. On typical single hung aluminum frame windows there are some small plastic spacers at the top of the frame. Pop those out and you may get an additional 1" of travel, maybe. Might be enough to get a unit mounted.

That said, I'm cooling 24x28 with a 10K Samsung unit that's at least 5 years old, so you may need to look at other 12K units. You may be able to find a 15K that has a similar shape - check the LG units. I replaced a 6500 Frigidaire with a 8K LG - the 8K LG was the same size and is 4x better at cooling a 12x24 space than the 6500 was.

Wall mounting is a good way to do it - but a 12K or larger unit will likely be wide enough that you will have to cut a stud even at 24" on center. If you go that route, source a unit that had a removable chassis. You'll have a much easier time of mounting it.

Here is my 10K window unit that I hacked to fit in a wall with home made brackets. It just fits between two studs. Once I'm sure the 8K LG works well, it'll get engineered into a wall too. I like my windows to be free. The opening is framed inside without removing any of the inside or outer siding, only cutting a hole just big enough to slide the unit into place. If you have to cut a stud, at least some of the inside wall will have to come out to place a small header.

Could I use a wall ac in the window? I found a 15000 btu that would possibly fit height wise. Are there kits that would make this possible?

I am beginning to guess not on installing a wall ac in a window. I can't seem to find a window kit for them. I don't understand how a 15000 btu wall unit is 14 something inches and a window unit same btu is 17-18 inches. I'm desperate!! Any suggestions are welcomed.

You can use a window A/C in the wall, but as far as I know you'll have difficulty using a wall A/C in a window; they don't have the necessary brackets, and I believe are meant to be permanently attached.

That said, I'm sure you could getto-rig something.

I'm not sure it can be modified either. I've looked online for conversion kits but can't find anything.
