Back in October I moved into a new house with a detached garage. The house a/c unit is a gas unit, and was on the fritz, so we spent $3800 to get a 3.5 ton 13 seer a/c and gas heater unit, installed, out the door. The house is 1303 square feet.

My garage is a 20X30 detached, and the roof mounted 2-ton a/c only unit was the reason we moved there. Well last Friday, it gave up the ghost. It's done.

Well I went back to the company that installed my first unit and got a quote. $3700 for a 2.5 ton 13 seer heat pump & a/c unit. It'd mount right to the roof, installed and fancy.

Since my garage is 1/2 the size of my house, and the unit is a ton less then the one on my house, I was understandably confused and shocked.

So here's my questions.

I think I may be comparing apples and oranges here. I'm comparing a 2.5 ton heat pump unit with a 3.5 ton gas unit. Is the difference between the two that great?

All the guys are telling me that a/c only units are hard to find and that you only have to pay another $300 for heat - which I want. Is that accurate?

What should I be looking for in an a/c unit?

Thanks in advance.

A heat pump will cost more. You usually have to pay more to have it equipped with resitance heat. you can buy an all in one unit. That is, it has the blower condenser and compressor unit in one box.All you have to do is pipe in the ducts. One in and one out .I recently bought a new 4 ton fridgidair heat pump with resitance heat 12 seer for my garage for 1300.00 with shipping included. I looked for about two months before I bought and I consistantly found good deals on ebay. Thats where I got mine Im very happy with it .

Based on the size of your garage you could get by with a 1.5 ton unit. this might save you a little.

I installed on in the shop a couple months ago and just finished up one on the addition to the house. They are a true jump in function. Quiet inside and out and work very well. They come with detailed instruction but might not be a true DIY job as you will need to pull a hard vacuum on the lines. My cost was $1700 lines and all for a 1.5 ton 16 SEER heat pump.

3700 for a 2.5 ton installed is not to bad in some areas.
