A couple metal building questions.

My local codes in St. Petersburg, Florida require that a metal garage has to match my house. Is it possible/practical to put a shingle roof on a metal building?

Also, my house has wood siding. Is there side panels available that would be a close match for that?

Thanks for any help. I’m sure I will have many more questions down the road.

You need to ask the city what it means by "has to match my house". It's quite possible that a color match is all they want. The metal building folks could certainly engineer a frame that would support the weight of a shingled roof. If the walls are required to be wood siding then ask if a facade would be acceptable.

Codes or HOA? The roof can be designed for purlins spaced for wood sheeting. The walls can be designed in a similar fashion. It’s not an uncommon question at all.

Codes. Luckily I don’t have an HOA. I have a lot of experience working on cars, but I have very limited knowledge about building construction. Are purloins the same thing as hat channel?

Why would you go through that kind of hassle and extra expense vs just stick build?
Yeah I’m not 100% sure about that at this point. One thing that appeals to me about metal is never having to worry about termites. That’s a never ending threat in Florida.

You really have to find out what is meant by " match". It could be they don't want wild color difference or it could just mean it should be within a range of size by comparison. It hard to say.

Nevermind...I looked, says it's has to be the same architectural design and construction materials as the principal building.

Well that ***** - I'd move, lol. OP - Looks like a stick building in your future. Best get some quotes either way to help you make up your mind.

I’m stunned. I have never heard of a building department that could dictate what your out buildings have to look like.

Where we live, ours had to "match", which simply meant the shop had to closely resemble the house (deed restriction, not HOA). We were able to choose a siding color that closely matched the house and used brick up to about 4 ft high on the front.

The building department should be in the life/safety business. They are concerned that things are assembled correctly so that the building doesn't fall down and kill you.
Lots of local governments have visual style and landscape requirements, even some counties.

Company I work for is getting out of the city and moving 10 miles out into the county.

Design/look of building had to be approved.

All 15 acres of the parking lot has to be paved (no gravel) and over 300 trees planted around the perimeter. The company is obviously seeking a variance.

On the other hand the county I live in, they don’t care at all about appearance.

Check out All-Steel buildings out of the Tampa area. Before I started my build they quoted out a metal building for me using a metal siding that looked like panel siding. Might be an option?

I know right! It seems to be a little open to interpretation though. This building was recently put up near me. Obviously it’s not an exact match. Just “close”.

Seems odd to require a detached metal garage to match the home. The company that supplied my metal workshop/garage offers wood panels on their barn designs and wainscots on all designs. A darker wainscot might simulate a wood siding of sorts. I purposely matched the home colors with my workshop.

I would be tempted to do a metal roof in a color that matches the shingles.

It doesn't require the metal building to match the design of the home. It requires all out buildings most likely.

Yes, with exceptions for carports enclosed on only three sides ( and located n the back third of the property), cold frames, and sheds under 200sqft. 1 type of each excepted per property.

That’s true but they are not the building department. The building department should be concerned with structural integrity and life safety requirements.

What about matching the colors on the house with the garage/shop you want to build? Same color roof on the garage as on the house & same or close color on the garage as on the house if that would work. Makes me very glad we live in a rural area without those requirements. We matched the best we could with the colors from our house to the garage/shop. We have a brick house with red/brown brick, so we have the walls barn red, house roof is brown, so brown roof on the garage/shop, white trim & windows & doors on house & garage/shop. We even matched our shed in the backyard.
