A dead end in tool evolution - old C clamp

Bought a neat old clamp today, looks a lot neater than it works, although it does work tolerably well. Marked No. 1 E.C. Stearns &Co. Syracuse N.Y.

Anvil end slides on the bar and is off of square so it jams when clamped. The cam moves the plunger about 1/4 to 1/2".

That's a great solution and doesn't need machining like screws do. Wish they still made them.

It also is related to the F clamp,and bar clamp with the sliding jaw

Stearns made all sorts of neat stuff. I have a spoke pointer (aka fore auger) they made.

They do, it's called an F clamp

While the OP's clamp has the same function as a cam actuated F clamp, it is backwards. I'm not sure what the benefit of doing it that way is (to me, it seems like a bad idea, as parts will get in the way at times).

I have some of these eccentric cam-action clamps.

Mine are stamped COLT, BATAVIA NY and I've seen theme erroneously marketed as vintage gun maker's clamps on Ebay. And sell!
