OK guys, lot's of great advice on my previous post.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227306

Sorry if this turns out to be a long one but almost ready to start spending money.... I have decided on an insulation plan as follows.

On the walls -
- fill in all the gaps at the base of the siding with spray foam.
- 1 1/2" foam (R6) on the siding between the girts.
- 2*4 studding on 16" centers.
- 3 1/2" fiberglass roll, Kraft faced (R13)
- 7/16" OSB

Ceiling -
- 6 1/4" fiberglass roll, Kraft faced (R19)
- 7/16" OSB

Now, some detail questions. At the top of the siding I have a ventilation gap (I think?) which will be reduced from 5 1/2" to about 1 1/2" when I have finished nailing on the OSB. Photo below showing the concern. Is this OK, still enough ventilation?

The area above the ceiling at the gable ends, does this need to be foamed, insulated and OSB'd or is it OK to leave it as is?

Once the ceiling is done and painted white I will replace the 6 single bulb lights with 6 dual 8' florescent lights. Then I will install a 15' or 20' radiant LPG heater. I think a central mounting would work best with the burner end nearest the door. Does this sound correct?

Thanks, and Merry Xmas and happy New Year to all.

More questions to come, great support on this forum!!

Sorry I didn't read your other thread linked, but either way, since you've been on GJ for many years, surely you know it's crazy to ask for insulation advice and not even list any location. Trying to insulate in N Canada is completely different gameplan than in S Florida.

Now would be critical time to Update GJ Profile with your LOCATION of City, State & Country.
Good luck.

Good advice. Originally when living in Houston I was more concerned about garage wiring, compressors etc, now I need to be able to set up my barn so I can actually work in it.
So, I've updated my profile, let's hope I get some comments.

Thanks, John

Nice garage so far. You can go quite a few directions here. If this was mine for the ceiling I would go with this:

1. 6mil vapor barrier stapled to the bottom of the joists sealed with tuck tape.
2. White corrugated metal screwed under joists.
3. Make sure soffits are vented properly and have a proper ridge vent.
4. Blow in fiberglass thick enough for at least an R30 or higher.

If you are in TC (cold/windy winters) are you sure you just want to put R19 in the ceiling? You are going to loose a bunch of heat like that.

Looks like a great garage, good luck!

A 1.5" gap all around the edge to allow the soffit ventilation into the attic is sufficient. You haven't shown it but we must assume that there is some way for air to enter the attic at the top of your walls and that must remain effective for your attic to remain ventilated. Be sure not to block it with the attic insulation.

You do not need to do any type of insulating on the gable ends above the ceiling insulation. You'll leave that triangle as-is.

Thanks all.

Highbeam, I do have entry around the top of the walls, soffits are vented so I'm good there.

Cheers, John
