I thought I would post this to try to inspire some of you to "go green," recycle a few old tools, and give them a new lease on life. Personally there is very little that is more relaxing to me or that gives me more satisfaction than restoring classic tools. I hit at least one auction every weekend, sometimes two or three depending upon the sales, and enjoy the thrill of the hunt to say the least. Unfortunately, last weekend's auction involved buying some rather large, but very nice furniture for SWMBO, but here are a few things I picked up two weekends ago at a single auction.

3 boxes totaling ~60 lbs of morse taper drills, taps, and dies. Some consumables you simply cannot have too many of. Paid $35, but made $15 back selling the plywood toolbox they were in to a lady who wanted another jewelry box project. $20 total.

An old Kennedy machinist top box that was filled with a small assortment of measuring tools and gages. The tools themselves I wouldnt say arent worth much, but they are mostly Starrett and classic Brown & Sharp, and well worth the $15 I paid for this total. In behind the bottom drawer of it I found a brandy new in its case completely operational HF digital caliper for what its worth. I was rather disappointed hoping for another Starrett after 20 mins figuring out how to remove the shelves to get to it. The box itself has some surface rust on it, and stinks to high heaven, but isnt dented or bent in the least. I am currently working on scraping the stinky felt out and will completely restore this box.

I also got a small box with half a dozen 6-8" jaw pullers too for $10.

Not too long ago I picked up the same Machinist box by chance at a random yard sale. Didn't quite get the deal you got, however the surface rust was minimal and the felt was in great condition. It does stink, though. I think it's the nature of Kennedy boxes as I now have three and they all smell.

Strange, I've got seven felt-lined Kennedy machinist's boxes and none of them stink. Depend on where they were stored, how damp and how long, I guess. Good thing, because replacing the felt is a huge pain.

BTW, take all those old calipers and misc Starrett/B&S, wipe them down with WD40. List them over on Practical Machinist, or Home Machinist. They'll go fast.

P.S. to justanengineer -

Longest road trip - 10,260 miles in 99 S10...now I understand why old ppl own motorhomes.
If someone said they'd give me that S10 and fill the bed with dollar bills, all I had to do was drive it 10,260 miles in a short time, I'd say, "Just shoot me now." For tall guys, the older versions of the S10 were mobile torture chambers, way worse, even.
