A Few Restored Hammers

This is a set of hammer heads that my father collected over the years. They were flea market and garage sale finds. The sizes are Vaughan 32 oz, Powr Kraft 24oz, Craftsman 20oz, Craftsman 16oz, and Herbrand 8oz. Over the last few weeks, I cleaned up the bodies and tried to polish out the faces. I wanted to make sure that the brands were still readable. I replaced all of the handles with hickory handles. My father had a set of body hammers from the late 1950s-1960s that had maroon handles. I thought they looked so neat when I was young. That’s why I chose maroon for these handles. They are stored in one of my old restored Gray/Red Craftsman roll aways.

I also did an old blacksmith cross peen hammer. It came from my family’s farm. My next projects to finish up will be an old Plumb roofing hatchet from the 1940s and a Martin ball 20oz ball peen.

I like those alot. I really like the contrast with those handles.

I saw a guy doing some of those a while back. He used something to blacken the heads. Then he polished the areas that you did. It really made the lettering stand out. Once they turn out so nice it makes one reluctant to use them.

Please tell us what remade handles you used or if you stained remade ones, what stain was it? The dark red is just right for this purpose.

Thank you. Most of the handles were new. I sanded them down, primed them, and painted them with Dupli-Color automotive spray paint. It was a can I had for my car and it happened to be very close to the color of a set of body hammers that belonged to my father. I thought his hammers looked very nice. I wanted these to match his. The number of the color is BGM0521 Dark Toreador Met.

It's Dupli-Color BGM0521 Dark Toreador Met. It matches a set of body hammers that my father had as I was growing up.
