I have a friend that I've known for 20+ years hes a kid to me close to the age as some of my sons. He is also one of my racing team mates.
Heres the issue he is a very bright young man recently started his own glass business and is doing well for himself a couple of years ago he found a cool house with a nice lot with a nice size garage. he has since added on to the back still not finished now he is adding on more to the side due to lack of space.
Seams reasonable right? well heres the kicker he can not stay organized he has been this way ever since I've known him. he has a 15 year old son that well is a carbon copy of him in all aspects.

He needs help getting his garage in order i told him I would help but it better stay that way which deep down inside I know won't happen. when his son is there and he isn't kid does what ever he wants including taking things apart.

So the question is should I help him or ot I pointed him to this web site but he doesn't have the attention span to catch on.
here are some pics to give you an idea of what i'm thinking about getting involved in.

IMHO It is worth a single shot. Make him help, and his son, and do it from start to finish. Get his interest and keep it.

Once done, kid him when he slips, but if it doesn't stick, let it go. Not worth losing a friend over.

Hell, that looks like my garage on a GOOD day.LOL!
But seriously, did both the father and son contribute to this mess?
You might help the dad, but if the dad doesn't make the son pick up after himself, I think your efforts will be similar to throwing Jello on the wall and expecting it to stick.

Without trying to sound like a ****....

Who are you to say how he should keep his garage? As long as he is happy and knows where his stuff is, then it should be his choice. I completely understand as I am anally clean myself, but unless his messyness directly affects you, then it is his choice.

I would offer to help, but if he declines or doesn't seem too interested, then let it be. If you enjoy cleaning and would get satisfaction out of helping clean, then offer your services with or without him.

We all have our faults. Some people can't stay organized. Some people can't write. Let it go. You'll only get frustrated when it ends up back a mess in 6 months.

Let me get this strait. Your bud is unorganized, according to your opinion. Is this correct? I don't care how close my friend is, if he attempted to make me organize my shop because he found it unappealing, he would be told to take it down a notch. It's my shop.

We all have different degrees of what we feel is the proper set up for a shop. I know I am not the most organized, but I know I'm not the worst. I have a best friend that has 2 or 3 of everthing because he can't find something when he wants it. I know this, he knows this. It is what makes him unique. It drives me nuts. He is not gonna change and I don't want him to. We've been friends since single digit ages.

If he actually asks for help with organization, hell yes, help. If he is happy the way he is, keep the friendship as is.

As for pointing him to this site, hell yes! I have pointed many people to this site and most thank me for it.

By the way, you might want to delete the thread if you actually tell your bud to check out the GJ. Unless you tell him ahead of time that you posted here.:)

You asked for an opinion, I gave one. Hope your cool with that.

this is the 1st addition he added and never finished he say he wants to turn it into a lounge area. However his house about 100ft from the garage has a cool TV/fireplace room with double doors and he has parked a car in there so WTF I say use this for the mill saws and such Right?

Looks like as much as it's a mess, it lacks organization. I'd suggest sitting down with him and developing a plan that outlines where he wants different stuff. Putt the bugs in one spot, atv's in another, tool boxes and mill somewhere else, etc. Then make sure there is a spot for EVERYTHING. If there isn't a spot for it, they'll find one....most likely in the middle of the floor.

ok I'm done with pics for now, yeah trst me we are on him all the time about being organized evben at the track he tends to need to borrow because he can't find his. An example tonite when i was the he did some tig welding for some one with no gloves because he couldn't find them. it was only a small weld but he would have done a better job had his hand not moved every time it got hot.
he has even offered to pay me for doing this clean up and I'm unemployed so the $$ would be nice

Well...If this is the case, you better get a good label machine. He will never be able to find anything after you go thru the joint. Either that, or expect to get phone calls at odd hours because he doesn't know where anything is.

I'm glad he knows he needs some order and I'm glad you have offered your services for a bit of coin. I hope everyone is happy in the end.

We have the before pics now. Make sure we are blown away with the after shots:)

Looks like the guy has more money that he knows what to do with and/or piss poor money management skills. Maybe through in some ADD into the mix to. I know what you're thinking, (me. .. an assshole) but if he doesn't have the attention span to catch on the GJ or browse some thread to get a few ideas, I'd think there maybe some ADD in his head.

Oops, need to finish my post.

I'd try to help him one time and get things organized. If he fails to follow through or just leaves it in shambles again, I wouldn't bother trying to help with it again. I doubt there is much you can do to help him if he can't help himself with some cleaning/organizing and finishing of things already started.

For money it is a no brainer. Set up the big tools as you said, set up some shelves and store the big items, and then set up the tool boxes. Bins for small items would finish it out nicely. Se up at least 20% more storage than you think he needs- He will need more. Make extra space around every storage category. Nothing worse than running out of storage before you have run out of items.

yes he and the son have some ADD. I know if I do this he will mess it up I'm hoping that at least the tools will be put back in the box when he is done working on what ever

JC Quick, You have good intentions, but we are all different, even you. If he came over and made your place messy, that wouldn't set well with you I presume, on the other hand, that may be the case with his place, dirty, dirty, dirty, He likes it that way, some people went around with dirty diapers when they were young. Lets blame his mama, it seems to look that way. The truth is, the apple does not fall far from the tree. There is a chance for the boy, Maybe!! Invite them over to your place when it looks it's best, after some time he may try to emulate what you do, especially when it only takes a micro second to find that end wrench.. On the other hand "A cluttered desks makes for a cluttered mind, at the least there is something in there. " An empty desk makes for an empty mind" I was told that once when someone noticed my clutter, but I am about 1/10th of your friend. To each his own!

If he were my friend, I'd offer to store that Bridgeport in a safe, clean place, where it will get regular maintenance and cleaning and be kept clear of obstructions, so that when he has a need to use it, it will always be ready.

Well he has been in many an organzied shop, and mine is not a super clean as some on here but I do have a place for everything and everything in its place.
As far as the apple doesn't fall far from the tree that is a very true statement in this case.

Don't get me wrong here he's all for me cleaning up he wants it. And I have said my piece about both of them cleaning up after themselfs the kid blew it off but his dad agrees.
Funny thing was just after saying that a neighbor came over and yelled at the kid for a mess he had made in his shop working on a mustang cause theres no room in there own. :shocking: it was great timing.

So not for nothing but if he wants you to help organize it and wants to pay you then do it. So what if he messes it up again. I know shops that pay guys to clean up and organize every week because they don't have the time. So think of it as a paying job and he can count on the fact that you won't steel from him and will care how it looks for him and it's under the table pay. Also he may just save money because he'll have room he didn't know he had and won't have to build.
Just my two cents

I would keep it simple. It appears he aquires items and puts it where ever there is an open spot to put it. Therefore, I would add some aisles. Tiles(foam squares?) would work perfect.
