Wondering if a person could make a manual transfer switch for my generator and how to go about it if possible. I am OK wiring, I have worked in a Electrical Wholesale house and have a couple of Electricians I call friends. Just don't want to bother them unless I have to.

He works at an electrical supply store. He's getting equipment at a discount, I say go for it.

What could be the advantage of a manual transfer switch over an interlock with a wattage meter? An interlock gives you more choice and flexibility...no?

I have one in my new house that was put in this summer. They wired key areas to a sub box and put two breakers at the top. It is now on the public elec breaker. If power goes out I can turn the breaker off which will allow me to turn on the breaker from the generator. Generac makes a small box that mounts outside to plug the generator into. I simply start up the generator, plug it into the box and throw the breaker. It has a lock out that will not allow me to back feed into the public elec. Simple manual operation.
