A little something to help keep me cool this summer...

This past summer we replaced the hvac system in my house and in so doing removed the attic fan. I took it to a buddy and he made this for me!!!

If you can't tell from the pics the box is about 5' square, that fan will MOVE some air!!!

The air flow and sound from those bad boys are both awesome. And talk about nap-inducing on a Sunday afternoon!

See if you can mount a pair of furnace air filters on the air intake side and you'll be far happier not having it blow dust, debris and bugs in all over what you're working on too.

Something about your HVAC install required removal of attic fan??

Attic fans are not very energy efficient.

We had a few fans similar to that at a place I used to work at in pa. But the ones that that company had, had 5 gallons of water in their base hooked up to a trickle flow to a filter
When both switches were turned on it'd blow a mist of water. On a 90° day I swear that was 15° cooler standing in front of that thing!

Those are called "swamp coolers"....

Learn something new everyday. I think they said they was $600 new 10 years ago. Between the two shops I think there was 5 or 6. But I don't work their anymore for quite a few reasons.

Just after I built my garage a friend was throwing away a swamp cooler. I was fairly large and had spent years cooling his parents house in California. Before then I'd heard about them but never seen one up close and personal. It was uglier than sin... (Hummm... that's a project for this spring.. paint the swamp cooler!), but it was free.

I picked it up, took it home. It took a little work cutting new filter media (HD had some stuff that worked great!). The filters had deteriorated over the last 50 years. It also required repairing the pump and water-shut off.

It sits on a top shelf the garage aimed at the area I usually stand. I don't have water to the the garage, so if I want to turn it on I have to fill it up by hand. That lasts a couple of days. On a hot day the cooler will blow out nice cool air. It keeps me cool.

Since I don't have it hanging out a window, I was worried about it increasing the humidity in the garage. But, in the last 4 years, no worries... there it has not been a problem. After all this is still Washington State (by 4 miles) and wet is good.

We had the same type of thing here at work. Problem is, 115° is a nice cool day in the summer in the plant and all those did was spray you with 115° water. Getting wet when it's 115° and 100% humidity is worse than not.

Our fans now make that attic fan look like a little desktop fan. I see people filling bags of ice and hanging them in front of the fans, redneck air conditioning, LOL.

It's 24° outside right now. Everyone is running their giant fans and are sweating their asses off. Tells a little bit about how hot and humid it gets here. Lucky for me, I've been here long enough that I am sitting in an AC office with the equipment I have to run

Hummm.......I bet I could add a misting system to this one. Might try that some day.

I have one of these made out of a 3' fan. I put a set of wheels from a creeper that broke under it. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Untill I pluged it in then I had to chase it across the shop. Now have locking wheels retrofited. They do move a lot of air, and with a change of pulleys you can change speeds.

Just what I was thinking. That thing would put my girlfriend right to sleep, which can be good or bad depending on my mood

In my experience be ready to slow it down.
I got rid of one like that just because it blew too much air too fast.
It just wasn’t comfortable.
I was planing to add a jack shaft but another guy wanted it as was

I can definitely understand if you stand in front off it, but I will be using it to draw a draft through the shop. I'll have it sitting in my 10 X 10 doorway blowing out, meanwhile I'll have my 3070 door open at the back of the shop. When I first got it home I did this and it made a nice draft of air across the shop.
