Okay. So, for benefit of future searches: This is temperature gauge/tool for annealing furnace use. When steel reaches annealing temperature, it becomes non-magnetic. The tip of this tool is magnetic, you reach into the furnace, if the magnetic end doesn't stick to the piece being annealed, you then use the hook on the tool to drag it out of the furnace. The tool and rod is made out of non-magnetic material, only the end of the tool is magnetic. The hook and magnet design is ingenious. It is well balanced, so when the magnet is attracted to something, it tips down, indicating that it is still too cool. It is just enough balanced that moving it around doesn't tip it.
