I think I saw a post (here on GJ, IIRC) that said a 1 1/2" flex sump hose should be run 5 to 10 feet into the 4" stubbed "up" discharge entry of the PVC line. One, what was the reasoning for this,,, and two, how is the flex hose replaced if need be?

Pump to the drain line does not have to be flex.

11/2”or 2” into the 4” helps you see if the drain line freezes or gets plugged for any reason. Without the air gap between the pipes, if the drain fails the pump will just run with no water movement.

I also use a battery water alarm to notify at the smallest leak......in all critical areas like sump, wash machine, well, under the refrigerator. behind the dishwasher etc

This is my sump pump hook up
No flex.
The valve and tee are for filling the pool in spring.

Are you talking about that black flexable hose sold for sump pumps? Never use that junk. I have seen holes in it a week old. If you really need the flex get the colapseable trash pump discharge hose. Way tougher stuff.

Usually the cheap flex pile is used for temporary (new construction) or on a house that’s sump rarely ever runs so it’s sacrificial and lays on the ground until it gets cut up with a weedwacker or similar

In michigan everyone hard pipes (pvc) it into a 3-4” double wall or pvc pipe that goes underground to a pop up or swale/ditch/sewer with an air gap like shown above.

That way if it freezes it can still pump water out and onto the ground

Thanks to all for your replies! I'm in the process of installing a 4" PVC sump pump drain, from my basement to the new storm sewer that was installed this past summer (113 feet of my PVC!). The County was nice enough to install a pipe from county right-of-way to just inside of my lot line (it was buried 58" down!). I've been digging the trench by hand (I'm NOT going to explain why the guy who said he'd dig it with his little excavator decided to bail!!!), and enjoying myself doing what I've done many times over many years (even at 73 years of age!,,, The fun of digging in clay soil,, ha, ha, ha). ...I wasn't thinking of installing the flex hose inside of the 4" PVC, I just couldn't remember the reason why the guy posted that,,, curious I guess. Thanks again friends!
