A New Beginning

After losing lease on my previous building/garage I found this diamond in the rough and have purchased and started renovations. shop was originally built in 1995 as a marine dealer and has been used car dealership(several) and even what last appeared to be a marine salvage yard business. Lot's of work to be done.

Here are some pics of things that need repair. Air compressor is totally shot and will not even run. Tree had grown through brace for cover of air compressor and damaged guttr/roof section of back of building.
the former business had so much junk piled up that drainage became a problem and flooded the showroom causing major damage to the pine flooring in the showroom. The walls in the showroom were damaged all around and a real ugly light green color. Leaks in the roof had damaged ceiling tiles and light fixtures in the showrrom and shop area are in need of repair and/or replacement.

We repaced damaged and missing boards and stripped floor to give it a rustic/vintage look. Trying to find a stain to closley match current floor and just refinished walls in light gray with darker gray trim. I will post pics of floor tomorrow before we put final coating on floor. It's starting to look really good.

There are a couple of pics from shop area. total enclosed area of shop, showroom and offices is 41' x 80'. there is a 40'x25' covered area on back side of building and south and east side of building has 25' awning with concrete floor. total lot size is approximately 1.3 acres fenced in.

Pics of showroom area during renovations. Most of the wall and light fixtures have been repaired and walls are painted.

We(my nephew and I) work on hot rods, classics, muscle cars and race cars. going to have a nice place for local car enthusiasts to hang around and enjoy.

The shop is located in Jackson, Ms. on I-55 South. Trying to debate on either making the front look like an old service station/garage or late 60's early 70's Plymouth/Dodge or GM Dealership. I think the dealership look would be ideal but much harder to execute.

First pic shows tile we put down at main entrance into showroom. The second picture is floor after sanding. Kinda like the wat this looks. Trying to decide on best finish to keep it looking this way. Any suggestions? The last pics are of the main counter after a bit of cleaning. Still much to do though.

There were two large windows between showroom and shop area that had been removed and just left open. There was also a lot of damage to the sheetrock that needed repair.
After repairs to sheetrock we installed two large mirrors where the windows had been. Not sure if I going to keep it this way but it works for now.

The counter was faced with slatboard and was probably damaged when people were leaning against counter and twisted hooks used to display items on slatboard. We decided to remove the slatboard and finish it with sheetrock. I'm going to get a vinyl wrap to cover the sheetrock around the counter that will include our logo. Hopefully it will turn out looking as good as I think it will.

After looking at all of the commercially available slat wall I decided that we would make our own. We started with No. 2, 1" x6"x10' and12' yellow pine boards we purchased at Follen. We ripped each board to 2 1/2" wide. We then set our table saw to make the balance of the cuts required to shape each board. We used a 50/50 mix of Minwax Gunstock and Early American stain to stain each board. After measuring an section of storebought slat wall for dimensions, we found that using two paint paddles together gave us the proper spacing between the boards. We then used a finish nailed to nail boards into place. The finished project actually looked better than I anticipated.

Great place!
There is a building I've been looking at for years close to here, it looks just like the one you bought. It also was a marine dealer, only this one is 50' from the water. I'd love to have this place but they are too in love with it to lower the price.

Nice work on the homemade slatwall. I've been looking for some for the end wall of my shop. Thanks to you I just might make it myself.

The slatwall was time consuming but probably the best thing I've decided to do so far on this building. Most that have seen it says it looks better in person than in the pics. I couldn't have imagined it working out any better than it did. Cutting the boards was the most time consuming part but well worth the effort.
