I see that Lee Valley is selling a chelation-style* concentrate that makes 5 liters of solution for $27. You can get 4 liters of EOR at HF for $20 minus 20% so the price isn't very competitive w shipping. But they also make a chelation-style rust remover gel, which is for objects you can't dip. Maybe I can get the rust off my vice with that!! Anybody tried this yet?

*If the word "chelation" is new to you: it's a process of basically surrounding rust chemically and holding it in solution, pulling it away from the base metal. Very non-destructive to the base metal, unlike acid solutions.

Another question, does anybody know what happens if you thin EOR with water to make a bigger vat of it? Does it have to be used full strength?

I use E/R alot and I like the idea of this Gel product...thanks for posting that...I'm going to order some and try it.

I did add water once to E/R in an attempt to make it last longer and while it may have been conditions at the time...temp etc...it decreased it's effectiveness....YMMV.

Another question, does anybody know what happens if you "thin" EOR with water to make a bigger vat of it? Does it have to be used full strength?

Oh. Good to know.

I wonder if you can make a "Gel" out of EOR. Like say, add cornstarch? Just a crazy idea, but that's what you use in cooking to make something thicker.

Cornstarch? Man is you crazy?
Seems like it would defeat the purpose by sucking up all the ions somehow.

Why do you have so much rusty stuff in California?

When stuff rusts here something is still left under the rust. Near the ocean corrosion can be nasty. As you go inland it gets drier and drier.

Ocean's a mile away. Afternoon fog most days. Think of it as a corrosive wet salty blanket. Chewed up my vice pretty bad in just 3 years.

I didn't know corn contained ions. "Corn ions!" But I believe chelation is a process that binds metal ions, not corn ions. LOL, "Corn Ions," that's funny! And I don't know why.

I've done some car inspections for people down near the ocean, and its just weird the "fuzz" growing on places that never have issues.

OTOH its nothing like the Godzilla flame thrower rust some cars back in the tri state (Ohio, PA, VA) had.
