A New Hope

Greetings comrades,

So I am an enthusiast obviously but everything I've spent in pursuing this hobby has been on my car itself. I definitely think working on having my own workspace is a goal definitely after seeing some of the work you guys and gals have put into your own space.

Im starting off with a dim lighting and wet concrete but I look to raise my workspace from it's squalor. My first step will be working on the interior flooring and walls to make the space presentable. I'm thinking I will lay diamond plated sheets throughout and then start painting.

Would love to hear from some of you guys and gals that has already gone through this process, preferably those of you who's done it on a modest budget

I would say lay out your goals for the space. Then prioritize- Address structural stuff first. Figure out what you need to make your jobs go smoother/ faster. A clean place to work is easy/cheap enough to start with. A coat of paint goes a long way and is cheap enough. Kitchen cabinets can be had cheaply and used for storage. Race deck is a quick pick me up, but isn’t cheap. Is it cold? Work on insulation and a heater. Need to see? put up some lights- In my 22x22, I just replaced the existing ceiling lights with a 4ft T-8. Made a huge difference vs what was there. Hang a pull chain light over your work bench.

Just some thoughts.

I hadn't heard of using kitchen cabinets. Wouldn't I need them to be aluminum or some sort of metal to withstand the weather? (Lots of weather changes where I'm from. Hot summers, really cold winters.

You're right that paint is cheap enough and goes a long way though. Gonna have to keep that tips back of mind mate

Depends where you live. I use the rail mount ikea kitchen cabinets in my garage. Unheated/non insulated and we get 10f to 90f regularly. No issues and they have been up 5 years or so.

The only problem with them would be when they get wet.

I you put shelf paper in the cabinets before you put anything in there you can keep whatever moisture gets in the cabinet from wrecking the shelves.

I am going to use kitchen cabinets in my next garage because I am removing them from the house. I am cutting the sides off and putting metal legs on them from Home Depot to make sure no water gets to the cabinets from the floor.

Should last me a life time.
