With the new shop I have been doing a "safety survey" of the place. There is no end to the places you can get banged in a shop and I can deal with the risks personally but worry about friends and family coming into the space. Primarily that is my 4 yr old Grandson, my Sidekick, for whom we are primary child care part of every M-F, since he was born. We go see him on the weekends:D

I have a '48 Unisaw that I've rebuilt (arbor, motor, electrics) and while it cuts beautifully it has not safety one on it. I've been thinking about upgrading to a Sawstop. I came home the other day and there were a number of large cardboard boxes containing a 3 hp, 52" Professional Sawstop. My daughter & SIL, the lads folks, had bought it for me and had it delivered. I have assembled it, but didn't have a chance to fire it up prior to having to leave for the holiday to see the other 1 1/2 Grandkids. All good! Happy Thanksgiving!

What a great gift for all involved. I have small kids, and keep everything unplugged and the shop locked for the same reasons. Happy Thanksgiving.

nothing against sawstop, but teaching proper use & respect of a table saw is more important than the safety features it may or may not have.
kickback can be just as bad or worse than what the sawstop prevents.

regardless, great gift from good people, hopefully the young ones learn to enjoy using with you.

Congratulations on both the helper and your new saw.

When my son in the eighth grade announced that he was old enough to use my 12" Craftsman Contractors saw, I told him " This saw is so dumb, the only difference it knows between fingers and boards; FINGERS ARE EASIER TO CUT".

He still has all of his gingers.

We are blessed with a grandson who is here most afternoons. He loves the tractors and being in the shop. At 2.5yo he loves to touch and turn everything. He managed to tilt the tablesaw blade over ~5 degrees and screw up the next use. So while keeping them safe, make sure of where settings are before powering up and using a machine with knobs and switches, it might not be where you left it.
