These are all great ideas, although I lean more minimalist when scouting tools. Experience has shown that I need two items most of all: a pocket LED flashlight (uses one AAA cell) and a cheap plastic magnifying glass (2" diameter lens).
If I think there won't be a tape measure available (estate or yard sale, flea market), I'll bring a Stanley 3-foot Powerlock, a keychain item about the size and thickness of three or four 25-cent pieces.
