A question for the pros

In looking through the tool **** (The tool box) thread I'm curious about what I'm not seeing.

For the most part, even in the pros tool boxes I'm not seeing a lot of specialized tools. For the most part few of these boxes seem to contain things like pullers, fuel pressure test kits, vehicle/manufacturer specific tools, terminal release tools, a hub-tamer set, etc.

While I know it's possible to make do without them, even as a non-pro, I often find they are worth the price in saved time on a single job. I'm surprised not to see more of them, or at least home made variants in the pro's tool boxes?

Am I just missing them?

Kits stay in the plastic cases a lot of the time, misc stay in one drawer.

Take a look at all of the plastic cases in my box....I don't leave expensive tools laying in the drawers.

Also if its a tech in a new car dealership a lot of the car specific tools are hung on a tool board and they are used by the entire shop vs. each tech buying/owning their own. If its a tool used often some of the techs will buy one to have in their box so they don't run into a position where they are waiting to use a tool.

As the others said though.. most specialty stuff has specialty cases and they stay locked away or in the bottom drawers since you don't reach for them all the time.

The tools that come in the cases, like the FP guage stays in the plastic case in a drawer in the side box.

I do have a drawer for misc tools though.

Thanks, I was just curious. I'm starting to accumulate a fair stack of those plastic cases myself, and I didn't see many of them when people were posting their tool boxes.

a lot of techs keep the special tools hidden away from the other guys in the shop. this way the tool is always in the same condition as they last used it..

if i had to search and locate the special tool twice , i would buy my own, saved me more time,made me more money, and alot lower blood pressure, i got way too much, gonna have to post some pics

Now you've got me curious - what are those sets for. The top one looks like it has some of the tools required for a timing belt change on my diesel. Am I close?

I keep my JD and Cummins special tools in a separate drawer. The dealer had the larger special tools. My pullers and A/C tools were in another drawer.
