I like scrap/recycling yards but mine sorts through all the reusable **** and has it neatly stacked under a lean-too on fancy steel shelves. Its even sorted by type and length. They try to keep similar things together like angle, square tube, rectangle tube, etc. Keeps everything out of the rain, keeps everything straight, and keeps the morons from pulling a pile of steel down on top of them.

Your pics look like the local shredder to me. Those are little piles btw. Next time I visit my local shredder Ill snap some pics

I've gotten a LOT of parts for my el camino out of there too, paying by the pound for them. Seems like there are a lot of people here that finance their vehicle projects by running meth labs, then when they get busted, the vehicle goes to the recycling center. Some examples....

They brought in a 78 monte carlo. I got both inner door panels, 3 switches out of the dash, a 3 month old starter (still had the sticker on it), a 3 month old holley 600, a 3 month old set of headers, and all of the nuts/bolts/clips. Since starters are so heavy, all that cost me $10.95! :wtf:

A week later an 83 Monte came in, in even better shape. I got both inner door panels and both door sill plates (all perfect!), both outside rear view mirrors w/dr side remote, both inner fender panels (perfect), a set of jounce bars (cowl to fender reinforcement bars), and a radiadiator that couldn't have been more than 6 mos old. Got all that for $14.95

About a month after that, a 72 C-20 chev pickup came in. It only needed bodywork to complete the restoration. It had a reman motor w/about 6300 miles on it. I couldn't get the shortblock out, but got the heads, intake, quadrajet (still had the sticker on it), and the HEI, ALL with about 6300 miles on them (receipts were in the glovebox). Since heads are so heavy, had to pay $22.50 for all that!

I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!!!!

scrapped a car yesterday, it came out to just under .15 lb

it was a salvage yard that last I checked (a couple of weeks ago) was paying slightly more than the scrap yard

I'm looking for a nice piece of 4" pipe (round or square) to make a grinder stand. That would be the perfect place to score something like that.

not only the pipe, but can get a 20" rim from an old truck for the base, or an 18" (or whatever size they are, they're great big) brake rotor off of a semi tractor. A few moonths ago, someone had brought in a stack of steel sheet. It was 5/8" thick, and the sheets were 6 X 10 ft. They were stacked flat, and there were two stacks 10-12 ft tall! :eyecrazy: All of us "buyers" were joking that those stacks were a battleship kit, some assembly required! The crane operator said they brought it in cause the metal itself was below spec for what they were gonna use it for, so they scrapped it. You wouldn't believe some of the things that get dragged in there.

I have also seen cars/trucks driven in there, turned off, and scrapped like they sat. Had good/clear titles too! :eyecrazy: An 01 Cavalier that was perfect w/72K miles on it comes to mind. It was missing the front bumper cover and the rt front fender. Everything worked. One of the lot guys paid $350 for it, bought a white fender/bumper cover (car was copper) for it 2 days later for $25, had those painted and sold the car in 3 days for $1500.

I've seen a few slide in truck tool boxes at the the recycler. I've never paid much attention to what is there to pickup as I'm dropping off and leaving.

use an old driveshaft from any vehicle junk yard, usually about 5-10.00 around here, a truck one will be heavier..

Quite a few years ago, a friend of mine got a huge (I think it was rated for 60 ton, could have been 80 ton, it was a large, heavy unit) hydraulic h-frame press at a scrap yard, for.....well, I don't remember exactly, could have been 25cts/lb or so.

It had a property tag from a large aircraft/missile manufacturing firm.

It turned out that they sent it to scrap cos a seal had failed in the pump.....the seal was an 'off the shelf' part from a hydraulic supply house, cost very little, and was rather easy to replace.

Moral of the story......keep checking out your local scrap yard, and make friends with the folks who run it......... : )

cheers
